Kevin Towers says pitchers who do not feel comfortable hitting batters do not belong in a Diamondba

You both totally missed his point. He meant that you can't/don't really aim at a guy's hand, since it's moving and a very small target and can usually be pulled out of the way quickly. When you throw at someone, you throw at their ass/lower back.

Alright, so if the Diamondbacks clearly have a organizational culture that mandates retaliation, at what point does MLB step in?  Does somebody have to get beaned first?

How about just an otherwise preventable injury?

It appears McCutchen could miss up to a month because of a strained oblique.  All reports say he injured it on a swing in yesterday's game with no mention of it happening to be in just about the same spot he was drilled on Saturday.  It could all be related.  Either way, a team right in the thick of a playoff race is losing its best player in part because of the idiocy of a team going nowhere fast.

Cripes, I wouldn't be above endorsing a Jose Offerman type response the next time a D-backs pitcher "retaliates", only let it be aimed at Kirk Gibson for ordering the hit.

I meant that it seems pretty clear the original hit of Goldschmidt wasn't intentional. Furthermore, it wasn't even something reckless. It was a pitch in an area that dozens of pitches are thrown every single day. There's no possible "they did it on purpose" OR "they were reckless" for the Diamondbacks to be angry about. It just happened. Retaliation for that is asinine and petty.

Wouldn't it be great if a player thought this way and charged the dugout after being hit... Forget the pitcher, just start walking towards the dbacks dugout screaming at Gibson. Won't happen, but I'd love to see it.

Stupid thing to say. He'll be hearing about this from the home office in NY.

"Hello Kevin? Yes, Bud Selig here. Got a a moment"?

MLB Network just reported that McCutchen doens't have an oblique strain, he has a fractured rib and cartilage damage, meaning Towers, Gibson and the Diamondbacks may have derailed Pittsburgh's playoff chances because they had to be tough guys and retaliate for something that clearly wasn't intentional.

I hope there are several suspensions and Towers is brought into New York for a long closed door meeting where it is made clear that this shit has to stop.

Fuck. This sucks. I'm not even a fan of the Pirates and this really sucks.

That really does suck. I can't wait for the day Towers and Gibson get fired.

Hopefully people will remember this the next time someone retaliates and it's defended because they do it "the right way" by not aiming for the head.

Throwing a hard ball, intentionally, 90+ mph at someone who performs precise physical activity for a living is very dangerous and there should be no tolerance for it in any fashion.

What about the phrase "I don't think anyone claimed that the Pirates were throwing at Goldschmidt when he broke his hand" makes you think I didn't get the point?

I think it depends on an interpretation of the word "the" in this context.

Rosenthal: Just now received follow-up text from trainer saying McCutchen injury probably NOT from HBP. Injury is ligament or tendon pulling from bone.

Good thing you cleared that up.

To me it reads more like he believes the results are all that matters, which is odd considering his history of looking beyond the surface level as a manager. Asshole or not, he was innovative and progressive in how he managed, which indicates an ability and desire to understand things as fully as possible. Dismissing the context here is a pretty shallow level of thinking.

Of course, he also has a history of "eye for an eye" which may be all that's going on here.

So Tony believes Goldy was hit on purpose, eh? What a douche.

I think it's more likely that the Diamondbacks are in a full panic and they decided to roll out their "Chief Baseball Officer" (whatever the hell that means) to try and blunt the impact of the criticism they are receiving.

It's telling that La Russa didn't claim that Goldschmidt was hit intentionally - only that it's unfair that no one is focusing on it when they lost their star player for the year.

Of course, La Russa is full of shit and everyone knows it, since he was the king of payback when he was a manager.

I think Tony does whatever Tony wants. If this is Arizona's idea of mitigating a situation, I don't want to be around them when I'm hanging around a campfire and a can of gasoline appears. I also think the nuance you observed in the second paragraph is just coincidence. That guy has an ego too great to be coy. They'd be better off saying nothing, because it sure doesn't seem MLB cares.

If he's speaking in his official capacity as "Chief Baseball Officer" then I can assure you that Tony is not doing whatever Tony wants. He was trotted out to help them defuse the situation from a PR perspective.

And I would agree that you don't want anyone from the Diamondbacks to be around your campfire.
