Hey! Winter Classic!
Is this one going to get off on time? Delayed because it's too nice out? Tune in and find out!

(Go Hawks! I want the Bruins to keep being the only home team to win. Which they just mentioned on nhl network. So yay.)

Grrr only home team to win, trying to forget about that.

But I'm also rooting for the Hawks...since we're chasing the Caps. A guy can dream...

Go Blackhawks because the Bruins trail the Caps by 1 point for the final wild card spot.  :smithicide:

Then the Bruins can run the WC home win streak to 2 next year.

How is the WC going to be at Gillette during football season?

It will only be a problem is the Pats host a home playoff game on the first weekend of the playoffs. They can probably swing it otherwise.

This game looks amazing on TV. The shadows especially. But, damn, there are not a lot of great seats for the crowd.

NHL hockey players wearing shades during a game is a visual I will never get used to but it's awesome.

Yeah the sight lines in baseball stadiums are awful. At Fenway, roof box by third/first was really the best place to be to watch the game. The atmosphere is amazing though.

winter classic question: why do they stop play at the 10-minute marks to change ends, rather than waiting for the first whistle after 10 minutes?

It's the only way to make it even for both teams. If they continue play until the next whistle and the next whistle is a goal against the team at a disadvantage, there would be problems.

though it adds strategy only found in this game, including stopping an attack, killing clock, etc. seems like waiting for the next whistle and giving up a few more seconds is much fairer. the conspiracy theorist in me figures it's to add a little more time to squeeze in a couple of additional commercials as they change ends (edit: which, thinking about it, wouldn't make a ton of sense either, since they'd change ends either way, minus an extra whistle).

So it adds strategy only found in this game. What's the issue? The game could continue for minutes without the whistle. There is nothing they can do.

see, the 10 minute horn fucked an attack and had that gone in, would've been a stupid review.

and the likelihood of that happening based on average play duration before a whistle (truthfully i don't know what it is, but i doubt it's very long).

either way, this is a regular season game, not an exhibition. it counts in the standings. it's silly to change rules for one game, creating something unfair just for this particular game.

How is it unfair if it applies to both teams?

i mean game-wise, since it only applies to this game (and i guess all of the outdoor games).

i don't think it's happened yet, but it's going to suck when a breakaway is stopped because the clock strikes 10:00.

Why, though? You need to explain why this would suck. Does it suck more when it happens at the 20 minute mark or is that the break of the clock? Any clock. And if this time limit applies to both teams, and the rules are spelled out clearly, why is it a problem? I think having one team playing on an advantageous side for longer is a bigger deal than having one team who might have a breakaway stopped by the clock.

because it just applies to this game. the rule itself makes sense: they're playing outdoors. there are natural elements (sun, wind, snow; you name it), so they should switch ends for the sake of fairness. totally get that. but adding a set timed stoppage is unique only to this and the other outdoor games. you're introducing a rule relative to clock management, which effectively makes this a game of six regulation 10 minute periods and two sudden-death 2:30 periods.

sure, it sucks at the 20 minute mark, but that's in line with the rules of the game. the game is played over three periods, not six. in choosing between the two, i'd rather they not interfere with the flow of a 20-minute period if it means a team gets another minute or two in one direction of the ice.

only analogy i can think of, although it's a looser one since it's far more arbitrary, is in soccer, where the referee can, but rarely, stops stoppage time during an attack, versus waiting until a play is effectively dead before blowing the whistle.

(sorry to divert the thread with this; it's an interesting conversation).

edit: i just remembered that soccer does have something like this. in the extremely hot matches (so, weather-related), referees can introduce cool down stoppages ("water breaks"). i forget how they're implemented though.

In fairness there were several non-calls that should have been Chicago penalties during the game.  The officiating was shitty overall.  The slewfoot by Shaw was blantant and there was no call and there were others as well.

No idea, but they found a way to do in Buffalo and Pittsburgh.
When they did it in Buffalo, there was a chance the Bills could host a wildcard game three or four days after the Winter Classic. Everyone in the room smiled politely when it was suggested a contingency plan be made, as they were already in last place and were obviously going to stay there.

They were talking about the Kevlar socks on the radio and speculating whether or not he wears them.

I still kind of think they should be selling and tanking, but if Giroux was done I was starting the countdown til pitchers and catchers.

Jagr became the oldest player in NHL history to score a hat trick last night. Guess who he did it against?

They're just spreading around the big pile of no goal manure the league has been dumping on them this season.

You don't post in their gamethreads? I do, it's kind of fun. Though after 2010 I think 3/4 of them have me pinked, and I wasn't even douchey. Much.

Yea, it's been a crazy year followed by (so far) a kind of shitty hockey season.
