So I have an Iphone 3GS with IOs 4.3.3. I just sold it on Ebay as Unlocked, I'm an idiot when it comes to this. I was reading an article online that says you'd have a better chance of selling if you include that in your title. I don't actually know if the phone is unlocked, do I have to jailbreak it to unlock the phone?
Yes the phone needs to be jailbroken before it is unlocked.

Anyways I ended up selling it to some guy in the Ukraine, I'm a little weary of shipping it since they prohibit mobile phones unless you get cleared first. Does anyone have similar experiences?
On principle, I never ship outside developed countries with excellent delivery notification services. Even if the buyer pays, there is a lot of scamming that involves claiming the package was never received, filing a claim with PayPal, and winning (getting their money back + a free phone) if the seller is unable to provide definitive proof it was delivered.

Thank you. I'll elaborate. I text so infrequently that I pay per text. Meanwhile I have a couple friends who have iPhones who sometimes text me even though I tell them I pay per text. I tried to convince them to get kik so we could text each other for free. One of them won't do it because he has unlimited text. The other won't do it because he's concerned about security, privacy, etc., which is the main reason I asked the question. How is Voxer with security concerns?
Try GroupMe. The best way to describe it is as group texting, or texting with 'CC. You text (for free, using the app) and everybody in the particular chain gets the text as either a GroupMe notification or an old-school text message if they don't want to get the app. It's perfect for coordinating with a group of folks who are all doing something together, but are dispersed (out at a game with a bunch of friends is the obvious use case, but it's also really good for say, keeping a running text conversation going with a group of old buddies).

I need to get a financial calculator app for my finance class that I'm starting in a couple weeks. Anyone have any suggestions? I've been suggested the T.I. BAII, but there's a bunch of different versions. Is it worth the extra money for the official version or are the knock-offs fine? Some of the reviews for the cheaper ones say they get wrong calculations sometime, yet most seem happy with them. I only need it for the class, so the cheapest version that doesn't suck will be fine.

If its just one class, the BAII will be more than sufficient (and generally easier to use IMO). If you plan to go into a finance career, best get the 12-C and learn how to use it (I hate that calculator -- others rave) as it will show up as a necessary tool for most tests during the rest of your career.

Co-sign the HP-12C, I love the calculator and got me through my MBA program. It works in reverse polish notation, which can be a pain at first, but if you buy the platinum edition, it also functions in algebraic.

If it's one class, I'd really suggest the $1 financial calculator over those two $15 options. In my aforementioned class, I used the $1 calculator, which did everything the HP-12C app a classmate had (for the particular class).

I'm just taking FINC 101 as an elective, so I went with the $1 one. Thanks to everyone for the feedback.

Here's the Gizmodo list of best iPhone apps (updated monthly). Macworld is also a good source for app reviews.

The apps I consider essential and use the most (aside from the built-in apps like mail, calendar, etc.) are probably Instapaper, Audible, Pandora, GPS Drive Motion X, Echofon (twitter client) and Reeder (Google Reader client).

I recommend the Twitter client, Dictionary, Google places, IMDB, Bing ( Microsoft made a great search app and the voice recognition is fantastic), Crackle, Cyclemeter (if you ride a bike for exercise), Nike + GPS, Dropbox, mSecure (password app), Brushes, and 100 pushups.

For games, obviously Plants vs Zombies, Angry Birds, Hero of Sparta, Infinity Blade, Dead space.

Got the iPhone on Thursday. My first question is whether I can get the MLB Gameday Audio that I already paid for on my desktop (pre-iPhone) without paying another $14.99 for At Bat.

Anyone know?

I know this isn't the norm here but on my other forum we are posting screen shots of Apps for some ideas on new ones. Here's a list of most of the stuff I've downloaded.

Headed to NYC tomorrow night for a meeting with a couple collaborators on Wednesday morning.

Anyone have any good A) Metro-North and/or B) NYC subway apps? I mean, maps would be cool, but apps that show more than (live updates, GPS integration, station info, etc.) that would actually be worth it.

Hop Stop and NYC Way, both free. HS is pretty much what you asked for, NYC Way is a more cumbersome thing that tries to do too much.

iTransNYC is good, though it costs money. $2, I think. Hop Stop is also good.

EDIT: I think the MTA (NYC's subway transit authority) has their own app, but I don't know if it's free or if it's any good. Given that this is the MTA we're talking about, it's probably awful.

This might be too late, but iTransNYC is what I use. It's usually accurate and I like how it lists all the weekend delays and stuff. Very useful.

Anyone else having issues with the HBO Mobile app? I keep getting a "we're sorry. Some videos can't be viewed right now". Only it seems to apply to every show and movie. Just when I thought I had an alternative to the wife's reality shows...

Edit: Nevermind...the old reboot move did the trick...

iPhone Rhapsody app question:

With no pattern observable to me, my Rhapsody app sometimes needs to remain open to play downloaded tracks/playlists, but at other times can be in a locked position and keep playing. Ideas, thoughts, concerns?

I have to say, I think I'm going to scrap Instapaper after using Read It Later. The articles transfer to read it later much better. I haven't encountered any of that random advertiser text in the middle of my article. Plus, Read it Later is integrated with byliner.com, which is great as well. The ease of Instapaper was that it would automatically update folders, but I found that for some publications, this would be infrequent. Longreads.com was great, since it was a twitter feed updated all the time. But The Atlantic Monthly, for instance, wouldn't update for months. And finally, the ability to transfer any article over to Evernote and annotate the article is a huge plus. I find that it complements Evernote really well. OH yeah, one more thing I like about Read It Later. It allows you to enter in your login info for pay walls, like at NYT, so I'm never blocked by a pay wall when reading an article. This is the perfect app for loading up on some articles at the end of work to read on the metro on the way home, load up for a plane ride, or to just load for home if you don't have time at work to read the article and don't want to print it out.

iCatcher! Is a great, great podcast app. Makes my day easier, which is the goal of these apps.

Also love the iMapMyRide app for tracking my road biking rides.

Mammoth is an awesome alternative to Safari - it's $0.99 but has in-app adjustable brightness, quick scrolling, a better tabbing interface, built-in translator, etc.

Apologies if it's already been mentioned, but AppShopper is pretty awesome. It lets you sort apps on the App Store by price cuts. There are tons everyday as developers look to lower prices in order to boost ratings. Some cuts last weeks, some only a couple of days. I've picked up a few that are free for a bit as well.

So WunderRadio stopped supporting 98.5 The Sports Hub. TuneIn supposedly still has it. Anyone have TuneIn who could confirm this?
TuneIn has been blocked as well. Download "Stitcher Radio", which is free, has an endless library of podcasts, and a huge library of radio live feeds as well, including a supported SportsHub feed.

I use WunderRadio and have the Sports Hub bookmaked, and it still works. as posted in another thread, try going to WunderRadio's web browser, paste this in (the full link):

http://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/WBZFMDIALUP.pls

and then bookmark the stream. You should be able to get to it that way from then on.

ESPN Scorecenter kept crashing on me and was getting very slow, so I switched to Yahoo Sportacular. It's a free app and very easy to navigate, and seems to update quickly.

Edit: Of course already been mentioned a few times in this thread, but here's another vote, especially if anyone else is having issues with the ESPN app.

iMapMyRide is tremendous, plus it works not only for bike rides, but for hikes, walks, etc.

It keeps track of your route, elevation change, how many miles, how much time, and they just added an update that makes it so you can start the app and then put it in the background.

Runkeeper is a (I assume) similar alternative as well.

Is there a way to delete previously purchased apps that have been deleted? I noticed the 'not on this phone' tab and there are a few things i would like to remove permanently.

Not as of now. Apple claims that the purchase history must be saved due to their "accounting software system" that must keep a record of your purchases at all times. They ignore the fact that with their resources, they could code a simple "hide" feature that would not force a delete and alleviates their concerns, but their bad excuse makes me think they're close to fixing the issue.

Some have had success turning off iCloud beta on their devices in the account, view appleid settings, but I have not. Even though I manually turn it off, and it looks successfully done, the cloud persists my my entire purchase history.

Anybody know of an app that allows you to accumulate info on business contacts? For instance, when I meet new customers etc, I like to write down some personal notes to remember. If they have favoritesports teams or hobbies or children's names or colleges they are attending etc. Stuff like this helps to build and/or solidify relationships. Would love to do it on my phone vs. Carrying a separate notebook. Recommendations? Thank you

Playing with the camera on the new 4S and found some really nice camera apps:

Camera+ - basically a better Camera app. Has a Stabilizer mode, as well as a Burst mode, and some others.

Pano - lets you take multiple pictures of a landscape and pieces them together into a simple panoramic view. Great for creating simple landscapes.

Photosynth - another panoramic photo application, created by Microsoft. Automatically takes photos and pieces them together as you move the phone around you. It's pretty amazing, and free.

edit: Just noticed EA has a sale going on for their games. Tetris & R-Type are both .99 cents.

I use Camera+ instead of the regular camera. The idea of the lightbox, where you mess with your pictures and discard the ones you don't want before you save to the camera roll, is definitely the way to go.

ed. - I'm hoping all camera apps will get the right to use the Volume+ button for a shutter - it would be lame if Apple hogged that for their own camera. I would also love if the new camera shortcut button on the lock screen could be customized to open any camera app - but I doubt that will ever happen.

WIth the new Photostream/iCloud integration, I'd rather all my pictures be immediately uploaded and do the fiddling from a desktop interface. This is actually the main reason I've ditched Camera+ after using it for the past year or so. That, and the volume button hack that STARTED with Camera+ (and resulted in an exile from the App store for a while) that is now supported by the regular camera app.

I was just playing with Camera+ after dowloading it on sale... I like the ability to tap separate points for exposure and focus, as well as the burst mode. Has anyone found a camera app they like that allows for exposure and/or focus bracketing? I had been thinking about replacing my Canon point and shoot, but if I can find a camera app with enough extra manual settings I won't bother.

Yeah, wherever you do your first batch of editing, ideally your pictures will "pause" before the cloud sucks them up. I like to use Camera+ first, and desktop after - but I can see it working both ways.

And true about the lineage of the shutter button hack - I hope all is forgiven by now.
