so I have an Ipad, and my kids have Iphones, but we each have our seperate and own Iclouds. How can I track the little cretins? We dont want to merge Iclouds or any of that. (they are teenage girls, dont ask)

You can try Apple's "Find My Friends" app.

The sneaky way to do this is make sure photo stream is turned on with their icloud as well as all their other stuff then log out of your icloud and log into hers every once in awhile.

The lesser of two evils would be to turn on parental controls.

How did this work out for you? I have three trips coming up, and I'm looking for something to organize all my expenses/receipts.
I never ended up really using it, although I should. I just keep all my receipts in my pocket and use JotNot to take pictures to turn them into PDF's. Not the most efficient way.

i tried expensify and didn't like it. I bought XpenseTrkr and like it a lot better. It has dropbox integration as well for PDFs etc. which works great.

So, I just upgraded from an iPod Touch and a dumpphone (meant dumbphone, but I'll keep that typo because it also feels appropriate) to an iPhone 4S. I've got a pretty good handle on games and newsreaders and all the other stuff I was already using, but what is the cool stuff I've been missing out on with cameras and full GPS and voice and all the other stuff that I didn't have on the iPod?

OK, I'm sure this is easy to figure out and I'm just a techno-moron, but how do I get SOSH on an I-Phone and I-Pad?

Wouldn't recommend it. As noted above, the new mobile site renders it virtually useless when it comes to jumping to the latest post. A shame, too, bc I really liked it w the old mobile design.

Tapatalk does the trick, tho it isn't free.
I don't get that, on the iPhone at least, you just hit the little dot/bullet thing to the left of the thread and it goes to the last post you read in the thread (not the actual last post, so if that's what you want, no luck, but to follow a thread it's pretty decent). I use it probably half the time to browse SoSH now, and it seems OK, syncs well with browser-based viewing too.

If you go hiking, GAIA GPS is wonderful. Little pricey, but really handy. The route/track interface is a little funky, but works great, and does surprisingly well on battery life. You can integrate it with trails websites, to upload and download tracks, which it can then guide you on.

I've been using the geocaching app, it's freaking awesome (albeit a little clunky)

Peterson Guide To North American Birds app is on sale today (from 4.99 down to .99) for earth day. Not sure how long the sale will last.

Really cool bird watching app from one of the best publications in the field. It has pictures, recordings of bird songs/calls, regions and more.

I never even noticed the dot/bullet thing before. I've enjoyed Tapatalk for the most part, tho I'm not in love with the fact that A) it can't render GIFs, B) it brings up a blank page for many of the embedded videos and C) scrolls to the top of the page every time you refresh. I may come back to IPBoard for a while.

I've been playing around with 2 new apps recently. The first is Yahoo's new browser "Axis" which displays the results as tiles instead of a page of links. I actually really like it and am quite impressed. I haven't used a yahoo browser in over a decade, the the tile search method really translates well to the mobile platform. Plus, it feels more interactive too. The page load times were sometimes faster than Safari as well.

The second app is Sidecar.me, which I found to a little buggy. However, I think the future of phone calls are where this app is headed. It's like Skype on steroids. From the phone call you can video chat, send pictures, contact info, and location data. There is huge potential for this type of interactive calling. If I want to take a picture of something and call someone to discuss it, I can just use the app, instead of taking a picture and texting it to them. It crashed a few times on me during calls when video chatting. I was using it over wifi at home. But, it's useful to check out and play around with it.

Don't know anything about Atomic, but the thing that's great about Chrome (for me, at least) is that it easily imported all of my bookmarks from my desktop. And I have a lot of bookmarks. Not sure if Safari can do that, but I don't use Safari outside of iOS. Firefox can do it, but it in a clumsy manner and in kind of a shitty browser (at least on iOS; I generally use Firefox on my desktop). I use Xmarks on both my desktop and laptop, but I'm not about to pay a $12 yearly fee to get access to that on my iPod Touch.

There's only two things that I don't like about it. One is that the address bar is always visible. I like how Safari hides it when you scroll down the page, then brings it back when you scroll to the top. I also don't like how the refresh button requires an extra step to get to, instead of being incorporated directly into the address bar. But those are minor quibbles compared to having all of my bookmarks easily available (and in a pretty great interface to boot; definitely better than Safari's). Plus they could easily rectify those issue with future updates.

iCloud automatically syncs bookmarks across all versions of Safari on any device or computer you have signed into your iCloud account.

I'm really digging the Solar weather app right now. It's beautifully done with a simple interface. It grabs its weather data from weatherundeground, which I trust more than yahoo weather in the dashboard. Plus, you can toggle the temp to show actual temperature or what it "feels like" outside.

I can't get tapatalk to log in no matter what I do. I've logged into the site through safari on my ipad, but when I put the same information into tapatalk it says the login and password are incorrect. I can't find any known issues like this so I'm wondering if anyone else here has had the same problem.

Anybody using an App that they like for password storage. I have so many different passwords that I simply can't remember them all and have to constantly use the "forgot password" links which is frustrating and time consuming. Thanks

Generally recommended is: http://keepass.info/download.html

I only know (lightly) about the Windows version, but there are tons of iPhone/iPad versions from the same source code (as you will see on that page).

(see also: http://lifehacker.com/5530702/best-password-manager-keepass and/or http://lifehacker.com/5046988/eight-best-keepass-plug+ins-to-master-your-passwords )

One of those lifehacker posts suggests using dropbox to sync the password DB across phone and windows versions, a great idea.

I've been super happy with 1password for this stuff.

It's not free, so if that's a priority look at KeePass et. al, but the polish is tremendous and it's worked really well for me.

The key here is something vs. nothing. Using any of these solutions is miles better than not using any, especially if you then take advantage by creating/using/cycling actually secure passwords.

I use mSecure for password storage, voicemail codes, frequent flier numbers and bill account numbers. The price tag of 1password seems absurd.

Has anyone used Fantastical? Its the best calendaring app. The animations are great and the app is so easy to use.

The new Yahoo weather app is sublime, just really well done.

ok, so I was on an important work-related phone call and my three youngest kids (7, 10, 13) were simply cracking up at the kitchen table while playing a game on their iPad minis (not the 7yo, he was just watching and giggling).

Here's the intro for the game:

I so want whoever wrote this app to make a bazillion dollars.

Curious if anyone has experience and recommendations for traffic-related apps.  Not purely GPS -- I have navigation built-in to the car -- but more real-time traffic info, particularly on local roads as opposed to just interstates. Also, how does the GPS feature on apps like Waze, INRIX and Beat the Traffic affect battery life, and are there too many ads on the free apps that interfere with usability, especially when in the car, etc.?  Thanks.

Anybody use/have recommendation for an app that allows you to send group e-mails on iPhone. I find it hard to believe that this is not a standard feature of iphone and I don't know what Apple's rationale is for not having it but, I need it so....looking for recommendations. Thank you

I don't use the native mail app for apple, but gmail is installed across all my platforms and it does this. This seems so obvious to me that I feel that I'm missing something in your post...

Full disclosure....I am not too technologically savvy. That being said, I did install and gmail and unless I am doing something wrong, I still can't do what I am trying to do. I am team parent for a soccer team. I have set up a group of 30 e-mail addresses but when I type in the name of the group, phone does not pull it up. Also set up as a group contact but still doesn't work. I went to Apple and they said it can only be done via 3rd party app which is why I was looking for recommendations for those.

You can create a sub-folder and send your groups one blank email each with the subject your group name. Then you can just hit reply all on each group and modify the subject.

Thanks for the shout out Nip, gonna DL that on the iPad when I get home.

Edit - While on the topic (slightly) has anyone found anything that will allow setting usage limits (x minutes per day for an app, etc) on iPads?  I keep seeing that damn commercial for the MayDay thing on Kindle and those features seem pretty darn cool.  Now I dont want to convert to a whole new platform, but something like that on the iPad would be very nice to help limit the little guy's time on the iPad.

Yes I have.  It's called losing the iPad for a week if they use it for more than the half an hour I tell em that they can use it ;)

Not an app, but I'd love it if someone could invent a gps locator thingy - something the size of a quarter, for example, that I could stick on the inside of an iPhone case so no one could ever lose it again.  Not just iPhones - tv remotes, keys, etc.  I love my four kids, I love my four kids, I love my four kids...I need to keep repeating this sometimes.

edit:  the Find my Phone thing doesn't work if the device is dead, plus it doesn't work on anything else I mentioned above.  Just wanted to point out that I know that app exists.

Yeah, this is already a thing that's been invented. Not released yet, but coming soon.
