As some of us posted on the other thread, Hogan can be a backup lefty punter(!), has played lacrosse, was a UDFA, threw for a TD, and had his best games against NE. You couldn't draw up more intangibles that BB likes than that.
How is he on rugby kicks?

I really like the pickup. Should be a nice addition to the Pats WR corps and an upgrade over what they got from Jojo last season.

Only thing I can think of is that by doing it immediately, they remove the cap hold Hogan has on their cap so they can pursue other free agents right NOW instead of later.

Maybe they like him personally and want to enable him to plan the next stage of his life as quickly as possible.

Edit: in other words, he has pretty feet.

Did he have a hold on their cap and the Patriots at the same time?

Maybe they just didn't need 5 days.

How many was Greg Salas going to catch a couple years ago, was it also 50?
Well, Salas had all of 6 games under his belt when the Pats brought him on board. Hogan has two full seasons as a fairly regular player, with 41 and 36 catches. I wouldn't be surprised if he posted 50 receptions, either, if he clicks with Brady. That's never a sure thing, of course.

I forgot Hogan was 7-11 from the Dolphins year on Hard Knocks.

Cant wait for the BB presser where after the 1000th question comparing his different white receivers he gives up and explains in painstaking detail how the players really are not that similar like he did with Edelman and Amendola last season.

I get that, as to them. But making the Pats wait would have theoretically hurt the Pats. Do they have the $ available for other players? Do they need to look at other WRs? Or even sign one just in case?

Put it this way: If I am the Pats, I'm glad I know right away. Which is why Buffalo should not have done that.

The team (Buffalo) he's got a RFA tender offer from has to reserve that amount, while the team that signs the RFA (Patriots) must hold the space on their cap till it's formally approved, so over that waiting period, both teams have to reserve cap at their offers until the deal's finalized.

See: http://overthecap.com/explaining-nfl-free-agent-designations/

Teams have five days to match the new offer sheet. During that time period the player will count on both teams’ salary cap.
So the only thing I can think of for why Buffalo would do it right now is to kick the cap hold off asap, because otherwise they could benefit from forcing NE to wait on other offers.

But they don't need to be under the cap at this point anyway (see J, NY), so maybe Rex has just gone soft.

Hmmm, maybe you are right. I thought the cutoff date was later. I'm also unsure how the Jets could possible be under the cap unless Forte took a really undermarket deal. They must have backloaded it.

From Andrew Brandt via Patscap.

It's just the top 51 is the number now but have to be under at all times probably with some wriggle room. Also NFLPA website is slow updating. At one point they were still showing Pats cap situation with 61 players on there which is wrong as only top 51 count right now.

As far as I understand from Patscap.

3/$12 overall deal with $5.5M 2016 cap number means his cap hits DECLINE over the course of the contract. Probably mostly a function of BB trying to keep Bills from matching but also makes it easier to keep him over time.

Regarding the White Receiving Corps, and allegations of racism on the part of BB.
Isn't it kindof the opposite? He's picking up very capable receivers, who happen to be white, BECAUSE the other teams undervalue them...because they are white?
Shouldn't the racism label be on the other GM's, for possibly (subconsciously) undervaluing the white receivers?

There's not really any allegations of racism anywhere except message boards that I've seen.

This is the old "The Celtics Are Racist" argument, as evidenced by the fact that they had eight white players on the greatest team ever.

Pretty good read, but if you're going to write an entire article about a player, you should at least spell his name correctly.

Pretty great article from Masslive.com on Chris Hogan. I never knew he was such a freak. Some great snippets about his all around athletic ability.

"At his 2011 Pro Day, Hogan pumped out 28 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. For reference, hundreds receivers have participated in the NFL combine since 2011, and none have matched Hogan's total on the bench."

Sounds like he also has insane hand eye coordination to go along with the obvious physical abilities. I'll be curious to see if Belichick takes advantage of some of his other football tools (kicking, throwing). He seems like the right guy to use in a trick play.

Nice to know the Pats have a backup kicker and punter on the active roster, if needed.
