Yikes. Would've rather had Matthews for 3yr/$15m.
I'm bullish. Hogan seems like the kind of player that can really develop in New England, and the fact that its so heavily front loaded means he will give us lots of flexibility in years 2 and 3 when the WR market is, hopefully, better.

@dougkyed Edelman: 4 years, $17 million Amendola: 3 years, $12.750 million Hogan: reportedly 3 years, $12 million

Breaking this out from the Pats FA thread. Bill have five days to match. Buffalo is very tight against the cap.

The watch begins.

Miguels jumps right in with an updated Pats cap numbers:

@patscap new cap space number of $12,156,355 includes the impact of the Chris Hogan offer sheet. Offer sheet remains on NE cap until Buffalo matches

To me, this is BB not repeating the mistake he made with Sanders.

He somewhat lowballed his offer, thinking that the then-cap-strapped Pittsburgh would not match. They did, and Sanders was re-signed by the Steelers (then eventually moved onto the Broncos, as we all know).

As some of us posted on the other thread, Hogan can be a backup lefty punter(!), has played lacrosse, was a UDFA, threw for a TD, and had his best games against NE. You couldn't draw up more intangibles that BB likes than that.

No chance Buffalo matches especially when they need money to sign their draft class as well.

Rapsh*t agrees:

@RapSheet Given the structure of WR Chris Hogan's #Patriots offer sheet, the #Bills aren't expected to match. Final call coming when they see details.

While highly unlikely, I wouldn't be completely surprised if the Bills match just to prevent the Pats from getting him. It would be a foolish decision for them financially (and it would seem the Pats are over paying) but I'm not ruling out the gamesmanship at play here.

I like this signing. He put up some decent numbers with mediocre to awful QB play the past 2 years. Has size that the Pats need at 6'1 220

It's fascinating, as Rex could not live with himself if Hogan performs well in a NE uni. Buffalo matching that offer isn't out of the question.

What a classic Pats signing---whether or not it works (since as we know many WR have not).

1. Spent much of college playing another sport (lacrosse)
2. His one year in college he played another position (DB)
3. Good athlete (4.5 40; 28 bench press reps at combine; 6.78 3 cone would have been 6th among all WR in this year's combine)
4. Has wandered through a bunch of teams/practice squads without really finding a role

Let's hope he is more Edelman/Welker than many of their recent WR draft picks!

I didn't see this mentioned elsewhere in the thread, what compensation are the Bills owed if they don't match?

Nothing. He was tendered at the lowest amount. He came into the league as an undrafted free agent.

I agree that he seems like a good fit, but I was just more bullish on Rishard Matthews as a fit. Would've preferred him at similar money, but Hogan should be a good addition.

Bills fans aren't excited to keep Hogan at those numbers, but this sentiment seems to pop up often:
http://boards.buffalobills.com/showthread.php?526620-Hogan-gone-to-Pats
Wahhhhhhhh!!
Chris Hogan is a big meh until the Pats make an offer for them.
Then, and only then, are we missing the boat on the supreme talent that is Chris Hogan.

Decent player. Hard worker.
7-11 he was not.
Hope he plays well except against us.

Bottom line is:
Who cares...
But mostly:
Hogan is mediocre. Good riddance at that contract. He made some plays but dropped way too many passes last year given his other limitations.

There is not a chance we match this. We have way more pressing needs. I'll take the $1.6M in cap space (and maybe a compensatory pick).

Hogan is not good. Everyone take a deep breath. We can spend money on more important players than him. That is too expensive for a guy like him.

Hogan is a solid #4 WR and we will miss him if we don't replace him but replacing him is not all that difficult

@SharpFootball BUF threw ball to him on just 11.6% of all pass plays, but NE is prepared to pay Chris Hogan $4M/yr, almost what they pay Edelman ($4.25M).

Yeah, only thing missing was some sort of Navy connection.

LOL. Some posters were joking that BB won't sign him since he didn't go to Rutgers. Well, supposedly it almost happened:
@Eric_Edholm Wait, Chris Hogan is lacrosse player, almost went to Rutgers, played S and WR ... shame on me for not predicting #Patriots job years ago.
...and the dots keep getting connecting:
@MarkDanielsPJ
Chris Hogan's first NFL game? Against the Patriots.
Hogan's first NFL TD? Against the Pats
Hogan's career high? 95 yards -against the Pats

I remember hearing Dolphins fans say the same thing about Wes Welker when the Pats signed him to an offer sheet.

Flawed stat since they only threw the ball like 20 times a game and Sammy Watkins and McCoy out of the backfield would get the majority of those targets.

For comparison's sake:

Welker's stats in Miami: 152 targets, 96 Receptions, 1,121 Yards, 11.7 YPR, 24.9 YPG

Hogan's stats in Buffalo: 137 targets, 87 Receptions, 959 Yards, 11.0 YPR, 20.0 YPG

In each case, Belichick is identifying an underutilized receiving asset from a division opponent as a RFA, who has given the Pats defense fits in the past. I like it.

Is it possible for the Bills to match THEN trade him? Would that incur more dead cap for them? If so, could BB & Rex work out a flat-out trade netting Ryan a low pick?

Whispers and innuendo of racism in 3...2...1...
You don't say.
In all seriousness, why are the Patriots so obsessed with white wide receivers? There's like ten white wide receivers and most of them have played for the Pats at one time or another. They had double white tight ends last year, they had like the only white running back in football for a while; like seriously, what gives?

#HateGate #WhiteGate

It's way beyond a coincidence. I'm not saying they're racists, obviously they have plenty of black players too. But Belichick and Brady definitely get a boner over white skill position players. There's not a doubt in my mind.

The comment from the Bills board member regarding drops prompted me to look this up.

According to Sporting Charts, Hogan had 4 drops last year on 59 targets for a drop percentage of 6.8%

Rishard Matthews also had 4 drops on 61 targets for a drop percentage of 6.6%

Hogan caught 61% of his targets while Matthews caught 70.5% of his.

Per @PhillAPerry, Hogan's article on the Players' Tribune:
http://www.theplayerstribune.com/chris-hogan-bills-nickname/
On being cut and working hard to get on Bills roster to catch his first TD:
But even though I had one of the better camps of all the receivers, I ended up getting cut. That was probably the most disappointing moment of my career. I had put everything into that camp. To be featured on Hard Knocks and everything, too — I really thought that I had made it. The NFL is a cutthroat business, though, and I learned it the hard way. But at the end of the day, you have two options: You can either quit and say Forget about it, I tried, or you can keep grinding.

After that, it was just a series of firsts. My first time suiting up came in the last couple games of that season. My first time playing was the home opener the following season. It was against the New England Patriots, and being able to run out of that tunnel at the beginning of the game was unlike anything I’d ever experienced.

My first touchdown came the season after that, when I began to establish myself as a major passing threat. It was also against the Patriots.

Per @PFF, Hogan ran 56 percent of his routes last season out of the slot. Someone who can play both inside and out.

The only white RB in football huh?

Okay professor.

Three reasons Hogan would figure to put up better numbers in NE:

1) More consistent playing time - only played 57% of snaps last year.
2) More pass-happy offense - Buffalo was 31st in passing attempts in 2015, Pats were 5th - 629 passes vs 465
3) Pats use the middle of the field more - Taylor threw outside the numbers 60% of the time, middle of the field 7%. Through the Houston game, Brady was at 43% & 14% in those areas, respectively.

He seems to fit the profile of a guy who was underutilized in his previous home where the Pats are a much better fit for his talents.

Some comments from Jeff Howe which gets me a little more excited about the signing.

Jeff Howe ‏@jeffphowe 7m
Just watched every ball thrown Hogan's way in 2015. His numbers would've spiked if the Bills had a capable pocket QB.

Jeff Howe ‏@jeffphowe 6m6 minutes ago
I really like Hogan's route-running ability, has good double moves, knows how to weave through various zones, good sideline comebacks.

Jeff Howe ‏@jeffphowe 5m5 minutes ago
Hogan can line up anywhere and he can absolutely take a good hit after the catch. He finishes every single play. I like that a lot.

Jeff Howe ‏@jeffphowe
Hogan makes some contested catches, but he needs to make more. Sometimes allows the CB to get better positioning as the ball arrives.

Howe's on a roll, and Hogan's Legend grows:

@jeffphowe He played through torn ligaments in his wrist for the last month of the season and needed surgery. Gotta like that.

@jeffphowe Yup, forgot to mention that. He's a gunner in punt coverage, can play special teams.

I'd like to call him MediumTron.

A caller on EEI just said the same thing. Rex was pretty pissed about how well Woodhead did with the Pats. He wouldn't want it to happen again.

Here's Bills WR depth chart. Frankly, they'd be nuts to match Hogan's contract:
  • Sammy Watkins
  • Robert Woods
  • Marquise Goodwin
  • Marcus Easley, Percy Harvin, Greg Salas (the former Pat & Jet), Jarrett Boykin, Leonard Hankerson, et al.
