Quintin Berry update.  This is just awesome.  I'm pretty sure I have never seen anything like it before.

that may be the worst camera work I've seen in a long time.

Artricles out there don't have much insight into why he was tossed, but it seems he had been arguing with the HP ump and got tossed as he ran to first on that single.

BTW, both managers in that game are Sox alum:  Ron Johnson and Billy Gardner, Jr.

Looks like some chance of the dreaded TJ here as well.

Since the Sox are playing the Cleveland Franconas this weekend it might be a good time to mention the nice season and decent career that David Murphy's putting together since leaving Boston. Was actually a little surprised that he played just 66 games here in less than 2 seasons. Seemed like more.

It's a bit hazy now, but I remember reading a Gammons piece not long after the Gagne trade that implied that the Sox fired the scout who recommended Murphy over Conor Jackson over his endorsement of Murphy... Which seems totally insane now, as Murph has proven to be the vastly superior player.

As someone who lives in a minor league city, I love when the big club signs a former star or a former major leaguer for organizational depth.

It makes me wonder why Pena wasn't snapped up before now. If you have a team without a real prospect at 1B in AAA or expected to make the AAA roster at some point, wouldn't Pena be a great guy to have? He's a high character guy, someone who could take younger players under his wing and if you're an NL club you could have him DH for an interleague series. He just seems like the type you would want in your organization.

Probably not exactly the right thread for this, but Youk guest co-hosted Tom Tolbert's shown on KNBR 680 yesterday.  I only heard bits and pieces, but he referenced the fact that he's now living in the Bay Area (which makes sense since his brother and wife's family live out here).  I'll be curious to see if this is what he's looking to do for his post-baseball career.  Both Eric Byrnes and Aubrey Huff have been radio personalities out here (Huff is the co-host of a morning show and is terrible, Byrnes used to have semi-regular appearances on Tolbert's show and occasionally hosted his own show and was passable), so Youk might be looking to follow in their footsteps.

Based on that, if Byrnes is passable, I don't want to hear Huff. Tolbert is great though. He is most knowledgeable in basketball, naturally, but he has educated himself so well in baseball and football that you'd think he played those sports also. Have to listen in more to KNBR at 3 pm plus for Youk.

Beckett now tied for 4th in ERA with Tanaka at 2.11.  In an even year at that.
14 straight shutout innings at the moment.

Although with a FIP of 3.85 (BAIP .233) the ERA isn't going to stay that low.

Former versus current Red Sox starting lineup by fWAR

Position Red Sox Player WAR Fmr Red Sox player WAR
C AJP 0.1 Salty 1.3
1B Napoli 2.0 Gonzalez 1.0
2B Pedroia 2.2 Punto 0.1
SS Bogaerts 1.0 Lowrie 0.6
3B Holt 1.6 Beltre 2.1
RF Nava 0.3 Crisp 1.3
CF Bradley 0.6 Ellsbury 1.6
LF Gomes 0.3 Moss 2.6
DH Ortiz 0.7 Martinez 2.4
Total 8.8   13

Some of the WAR would actually change based on position (Crisp for instance, and Moss).

This is not a takedown of the FO strategy.  Obviously the group on the right costs a lot more money, and doesn't even consider Crawford, et al.  I also get to cherry pick the 9 best players capable of covering the 9 positions on the diamond whereas the Sox guys are who is on the team now.  Just a stupid exercise for a lazy Monday where 3/4 of my company has the week off.  At the end of the day, this was actually a bit closer than I thought considering how good VMart (wOBA 46 points higher than career average) and Moss have been.  FanGraphs at least gives a lot of credit to JBJ and Pedroia defense.

Michael Almanzar just activated from the DL and DFA.
That would be fantastic if they ended up getting him back. He could play 1B/DH at Portland to replace Shaw's at bats for the Sea Dogs. Or, perhaps they can work out a trade with the Orioles to get an outfielder instead.

Bryant Nelson, a 2002 Red Sox with 9 MLB hits, is slogging away in his 20th minor league season with the Camden Riversharks. He has 2,285 MiLB hits.

Looks like they should have given him a day to get acclimated.

The Yankees' Alfredo Aceves suspended 50 games for second positive test for "drug of abuse," MLB says. (He's now in Triple-A.)

Apparently, it's for marijuana, which is tested for in the minors but not under the MLB drug policy.  My guess is he celebrated his call-up without considering it might only be temporary.  Whoops.

The Rockies and left-hander Chris Capuano have agreed on a minor league contract, CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reports (via Twitter).  The deal will cost the Rockies only the minimum, as the Red Sox still owe Capuano the approximately $1.18MM remaining on his previous contract after he was released earlier this week.  Capuano is represented by Moye Sports Associates.

Capuano will be stretched out as a starting pitcher at Triple-A, Heyman notes, after pitching exclusively out of the bullpen in Boston.  The veteran southpaw posted a 4.55 ERA, 8.2 K/9 and 1.93 K/BB rate in 31 2/3 IP this season, and that ERA was largely inflated by a five-run outing on June 23 in what ended up as his final appearance with the Red Sox.

The signing marks both a return to starting and a return to the NL for Capuano, as he spent the first nine years of his career in the senior circuit before signing with Boston last winter.  Given the Rockies’ need for starting pitching, it’s basically a no-lose signing on their part to see if Capuano can adapt to the thin Colorado air and eventually provide some innings to the Major League rotation.

Ouch. Will be 38 when he's able to be back...probably the end for him.  Kind of shitty considering he went whole career without going on DL until this year.

Maddening how?^

Another former Sox product....

Rizzo 18th bomb last night. Projected for 30+, and still only 24 years old on the tip of coming into his prime.

Imagine if the Red Sox had listened to Eric Van and resigned Adrian Beltre instead of trading for Adrian Gonzalez?

Of all the ones who got away, he's the one that really seems like the biggest mistake.  One of the few megadeals that have worked out.

In other news, Coco is eviscerating the Giants.  He even stole third tonight.  Beane was very smart about Coco -- he knew that he was worth keepting, but also knew that he had to always have an excellent back-up CF around because Coco would inevitably miss time every year.  Ben could learn a lot from Beane.

Meanwhile, one of the best teams in baseball over the past two seasons has had Jed Lowrie as its everyday SS.  I'd have bet a lot of money against that happening in 2012.  He hasn't been hitting well this year, but seems to be heating up.
