Felger and Mazz - Creating False Naratives one day at a time

Why do people expect anything different at this point? To predict Felger's take just stick your finger up into the wind, see where the consensus is going, and Felger will jump to the other side to drive "engagement".
I've been saying this for years. Whenever there's a big sports story I'll usually tune in at 2 for the first segment because I'm curious how Felger will go against the grain of the prevailing attitude, regardless of the topic. It's remarkable that the formula has been this sustainable in terms of ratings when the narrative is so predictable and cliched.

The day after the Pats selected Maye:

Felger: “I’d rather be Atlanta [taking Penix at R1-8 after signing Cousins] than you…”

Mazz: “The pick sucked because it was a safe pick. I’d rather they took a gamble and showed some balls [by trading down for a lesser QB and collecting more picks]…”

Popsicle headache.

So today after the Celtics went up 3-1 on the Heat and can close out the series tomorrow night, Felger is going to yammer on and on about the KP injury and how he's made of glass and "I told you that he's not someone they can depend on" and now they are screwed moving forward, no longer the favorites in his eyes.

Sounds about right.

It's a pretty simple formula. You know the Pats are at 3, they know the Pats won't/can't/shouldn't pick Penix at 3 so they start talking up Penix. That way if they draft anyone but Penix, the Pats were wrong. Then if the Pats take Penix at 3 it was a huge reach "You know I love Penix, but at #3?? You can't do that and needed to trade down!"

So unless they miraculously trade down and some how land Penix at like Pick 20, where they deemed he should be drafted, the Pats are stupid. Then if the Pats do trade down and the Vikings take him at 8, THEY HAVE NO QUARTERBACK!

They basically set it up so they can't lose and have something to bitch about.

It was even more tortured than that... Felger preferred Atlanta because they invested in the position, vs the Pats going from Newton to Mac to Maye... "pick a bad QB, fail, repeat every three years... that's what bad teams do, and you're a bad team."

Totally ignoring that Atlanta stuck with a broken down Ryan in 2021, failed, went to Mariota in 2022, failed, went to Ridder in 2023, failed, and are now onto their 4th starting QB in four years. Plus wasting a premium pick on Penix.

1. Tatum shouldn’t have shot after the whistle. That’s just asking for trouble, especially against a team like Miami. However…

2. Adebayo is 100% in the wrong there and it was a borderline dirty play. Asshole move on his part, but completely in character for the team.

SVG was right about the Celtics wanting it both ways, but completely wrong about who’s fault it was.

Tatum shouldn’t be exposing himself to stuff like that against a team with nothing to lose and a reputation for rough stuff.

As usual, F&M think they’ve got a clever “gotcha” take but miss the point altogether.

or they know that it'll rile up the fans if they take the "Tatum had it coming" route, and they don't actually care at all.

Celtics win the series last night, seems like the news of the day.

Felger to kick off the show: No, we're not talking about the Celtics until 4:00. We need to talk about Drake Maye and when he is going to start instead even though that may be over a year from now.

"Celtics winning is boring so we're talking Pats." Stewart/ Murray"Blahhh blahhhh but Celtics won last night so the fans want us to talk Cs" - Click - change channel. Only thing interesting about this show now is the opening segment twist out of curiosity.

I’m still slightly shocked/chuckling that they gave the Pats’ draft an F.

Not a B because they got what they needed but could’ve done more to trade up for the players they really wanted.

Not a C because they basically took the obvious guys on the board in the positions of need.

But an F. Why? Because they saw some people (who? I have no idea) grade them an A for the draft and they thought that was ridiculous. So they did an equally ridiculous “fuck you F” in response.

If it’s true they’re burying Celtics talk, that seems stupid because they’re by far the strongest Boston team right now and success generally generates maximum engagement with sports talk radio. Why piss on higher ratings - isn’t Felger supposed to ultimately be a savvy carnival barker in this respect?

Not in Boston it doesn't.

Pitino may have been an ass but he was bang on with "fellowship of the miserable"
That may have been accurate but I think we've (d)evolved from misery to anger. Whenever I hear or see Felger lately, he seems like the Boston sports answer to a screaming Alex Jones.

Joking about Monty "having to go back to rehab because he was drinking the panic juice" is funny?

Given Monty's struggles with alcohol and how forthcoming he's been about it, no, it is not.

JFC. I mean it's one thing to troll us as sports fans, and as much as that frustrates me I admit to finding it entertaining at times. But trolling someone about alcoholism is just flat out gross.

It’s the rehab part that is the most problematic. It’s also the part he doesn’t address and ducks with I don’t remember exactly what was said line. He knows the rehab line kills the it wasn’t about alcoholism thing.

Naturally Felger is playing dumb:

He (Felger) is absolutely using Monty's previous issues with alcohol to make jokes. What an awful human being he is.
It's really not hard to just say "We didn't mean it that way but now that you point it out, it was shitty of us. We'll stop."

That's all it takes. Too big a hill to climb I guess.

About 10 minutes ago he claimed, with a hint of faux surprise, that he was getting some “blowback” about his comments. He said it was a mistake and that he didn’t intend to make fun of Montgomery’s past issues. But he never apologized, and imo was not at all contrite. I thought he was borderline indignant: “if you’ve been listening to the show at all you’d know…”.

He’s an asshole.

I'm not going into V&N territory here, but this is the new apology from people in power. They don't take ownership for their mistake (they were just screwing around with locker room talk!) and they'll never admit that they're wrong (how could they be wrong, they're rich!). In fact, they'll put the blame on you for finding fault with what they said (wokeness, people being too "touchy", cancel culture, shit like that).

I happen to like Mike Felger (not on this, he's dead wrong) but he's a rich, white guy with a modicum of success. Thinking that he was going to apologize or find some fault in what he said, was never, ever going to happen.

On Comcast Sports Night on Monday he was still crowing about how he was "right" last year when a Celtic (I can't remember who) didn't play a playoff game and he called him a baby or something stupid. "Brandon Carlo played and he got a goal, so I was right!" Sure Felger. Whatever you say.

I couldn't embed this since it's Instagram but holy fucking shit this is sickening. Mazz suggests that if the Celtics win the title, it's hollow because it would be too easy due to the teams they played. Just wow.
He said the exact same thing the year that the Pats beat the Falcons in the Super Bowl. "Mike, there's no 1990 New York Giants or 1990 San Francisco 49ers. All of these teams stink!"

To his credit, even Felger said he didn't agree and that this was a ridiculous take.

I was about to respond that he was pulling this straight out of the old embarrassing Shaughnessy Patriots playbook, except Dan is still at it too. If they win it means nothing because they beat "tomato cans", if they lose they're a joke for losing. Great way to guarantee you can bash the local teams no matter what.

To be followed in the finals by some reference to a "Yahoo Town", especially if the opponent is OKC.
