Mazz is an old school baseball fan. Even as a Sox fan, he is like most other old school baseball fans with his reverence for the winningest, classiest team in baseball history. Between the rings, the names, and the history, it's an obsession a lot of baseball people have. There were anchors on SportsCenter who used to say "And all is now right in the baseball world again" whenever the Yankees would win a series after not winning the year before. It's like they're the Globetrotters of baseball and anyone else winning it all is like seeing the Generals win to a lot of those who were forced, for professional reasons, to move onto national coverage of the sport and start having to have conversations with people within other organizations. Plus, as much as we hate the Yankees, they are probably still the most recognizable brand in the game and tend to draw ratings. A Yankees-Dodgers (or whomever) World Series would, presumably, be a good ratings draw. Plus, if the Yankees win their 28th title, it's a little more newsworthy than a team like Houston winning it again. There's also a perception that when the Yankees are doing well, the game is doing well because a lot pf casual baseball fans like the Yankees and just about every casual fan likes rooting for the team that produced Babe Ruth (the hitting version), Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Derek Jeter, etc., because they are viewed as the elite.
I work with a guy who's a Yankees fan simply because they're the most successful team and he admires that kind of consistency. At least he's not a dick about it, though.
But Mazz generally tends to be far less in troll mode on the Baseball Reporters. His ultimate point was that a Yankees win would probably move the needle for more people than, say, the St. Louis Cardinals or Minnesota Twins winning it all.
