The NHL website went live with their advanced stats today.

http://www.nhl.com/stats/advancedstats

It's not bad and I'm glad they're embracing the stats. (I'm not sure, but are they the first league to do so? Does MLB collect and make sabrmetrics data available to the public?)

They did decide to not use Corsi and Fenwick as the names for the most commonly used possession stats. Instead Corsi is shot attempts (SAT) and Fenwick is unblocked shot attempts (USAT).

My guess is that they can't use those terms without paying a "fee" to someone.  Either that or the way they got some anti-analytics hardliner to acquiesce and allow these stats was to not call them the same thing to make them a step harder to use.

I think it's closer to the latter. They sound intimidating though and so I think the league is trying to make them sound less intimidating and more appealing to the average fan. Of course, labeling them as "enhanced" stats when they're pretty rudimentary and simple +/- of shot attempts compounds the problem of average fans finding them to be intimidating or unappealing.

Yes, that's got to be exactly it, Cshea.  Corsi and Fenwick are fucking dumb names for the stats as they don't provide any insight into what the hell the stat is measuring - it would be like calling Runs Created "James."  Making things simple, especially when, as you note, they ARE simple, is key to getting acceptance.

This is now my go-to video for people who hate analytics (even though its NHL-based):

Trade activity starting to pick up. 2 potential B's targets go off the board.

Winnik to Pittsburgh for Zac Sill a 16 2nd and 15 4th

Jiri Tlusty goes to Winnipeg for a 16 3rd and conditional 15 6th.

That... is an extremely light package for Tlusty.

At the same time, seems to be a relative overpay for Winnik. Sill's a nothing and the Jets' early 3rd is similar value to the Pens' late 2nd, not sure why the Pens are giving up a higher, guaranteed pick though.

Makes sense. I hope Shanahan doesn't approach the rest of his reign with this level of competence.

Signed Santorelli and Winnik off the street and has turned them into a 2nd and the better part of a 1st and it's still 5 days til deadline day.

Prospect is Roland McKeown.

That's a great return for Carolina, knew Sekera would get a first but McKeown's got some great upside and profiles to be a similar player in time.

Deal is: CAR trades D Andrej Sekera to LA for a 2015 conditional 1st RD pick and D Roland McKeown (50th overall in 2014)

If LAK miss playoffs its a 2016 pick, if they make playoffs its a 2015

Only 15% of the upper limit of the salary cap can be retained by a team at a time, but the max on an individual contract is 50%.

Pretty disappointed to see Tlusty go for so little. Thought he could have been a good fit for B's especially with the Krejci injury.
Really curious to know if Boston was at all involved.

So Toronto is paying 50% of the remaining salary, and also retaining 15% of the remaining cap hit?

The 15% piece is a team-wide and not a player specific measure. It means a team can have no more than 15% of the upper bound of the cap as retained cap hits.

Additionally teams can have salary retained for no more than 3 players at a time, and can not reacquire a player for whom they have retained salary for a full calendar year unless their contract has expired in the mean time.

For instance, with a $71.1m cap, a team would be able to retain no more than $10.615m in AAV at a time. In this case, Taranna is retaining 1/2 of Winnik's remaining $322k cap hit, so $0.161m. They are also already retaining $0.2m of Carl Gunnarsson's cap number as part of the Polak trade, so $0.361m total.

They can retain an additional $10.254m in cap hit for the rest of this season for 1 player by the salary retained rule, but can again retain salary for up to 3 players beginning July 1 when Gunnarsson and Winnik's deals expire.

The Leafs have only $1.62m in space as it stands. Regardless, sets them up to get creative with assets coming back as they blow it up again.

Very steep price for Florida.

The 3rd isn't really conditional- the condition is NJ gets to choose which of Florida's 3rd rounders they want. Florida's pick, or the Minny pick they got in the Bergengim deal.

Don't really understand Columbus' angle on that one.

Guess Horton's salary wasn't being paid by insurance, so Columbus gets an actual player for Horton. Toronto pays Horton, gets to use LTIR space.

That's actually a creative deal for both sides. I never would have thought it would happen but it makes total sense since Horton's deal was not insured.

B's really dodged a bullet not re-signing him, huh?

Shanny/Nonis are absolutely killing it right now.

No kidding, Shanahan may yet turn the Leafs into a viable team.

That is, if MLSE gives him more than 3 years at the helm

That's exactly, right.  The Jackets actually get a player for the money they're spending and Toronto gets cap space while they have the deep pockets to pay Horton to not play.

I'd be shocked if Zid got you guys less than a 2nd plus a decent prospect, or low '15 1st.

Ryder/Havlat, 5th each if you're lucky - but still more than a bag o' pucks.

anyone who gives NJ literally anything for these awful players should be fired moments later. No hyperbole.

Pretty stoked to offload the Jagr.

Now trade Zidlicky, Ryder and Havlat for a bag of pucks and fucking start over.
Yup.  Ryder and Havlat especially (but also Ruutu and Zubrus) are useless.  Zidlicky might get you something, as he might be attractive to a team that wants an offensive-minded defenseman who can get the puck out of the defensive zone and work on the PP.  So long as they don't mind the needless turnovers at the blue line.  But those other guys...sheesh.

But the #1 problem is Lou.  Until he goes, there's very little hope.

Flyers trade Kimmo Timonen to Chicago for a 2nd in 2015 and a conditional pick in 2016. Pretty good return for the Flyers. 2016 pick could be as high as a 2nd, the conditions have to do with how far Chicago goes in the playoffs and how much Timonen plays.

Boston sending 2 second round picks to Tampa. This is definitely an outside the box trade. Connolly is only 22, a former 6th overall pick who was playing very well in the AHL this season.

Edit: someone move this to the Connolly thread please
