I looked it up. Pomeranz is old Latin for "fruit of the ants". It's true. Trust me.
I saw that there's two threads with topics tangentially related to his pitching (the trade deal thread and the Padres being sneaky hiding his fragile mental state from us thread), but nothing that Sprowl or any of the other posters that know things can really chime in on discussing his pitching and future with the team.
So far he's been a disappointment... he started horribly and has been slowly improving... and finally today it feels like his AL coming out game. Against a tough opponent he went 7 2/3 innings. Still seems suddenly HR prone when he was noticeably NOT HR prone prior to his coming to the Sox.
If he pitches like this or close to it for the remainder of the season and through the playoffs (because we'll likely make the playoffs if he continues to pitch like this.... everything else staying steady, of course!) we'll be looking real good on the trade deal in just half a season.
Go Ant-Fruit!

Yeah, he was good today, and as I said in the game thread, his name means importer of bitter oranges. But what real content were you looking for in this thread? We know his past and can only guess at his future. . .

According the meaning-of-names.com, no meaning has been submitted for Pomeranz, so this seems up for grabs!

In his first 3 games as a Red Sock, his ERA is 7.53.
In the next three games, his ERA is 2.37

Has he adjusted to his new team and surroundings, or is this SSS noise? I suspect some of both, but mostly the former. So my guess for his future is "valued starter."

Yeah, I mean it's still a guess, and the other supposed upside of this trade -- where he's in the fold for the next two seasons -- is also something of a guess, but the signs are positive that we didn't throw away our top long-range pitching prospect for nothing. I still believe that, relative to the inflated prices paid for other less (potentially) valuable pitching pieces, and relative to the even more grossly inflated prices of scarce pitching this coming winter, that it was a very reasonable trade. And I'm always up for some Latin.

The rain delay may have been a blessing of sorts. I know there has been some concern about Pomeranz being at an all time high for IP with 6 weeks left to go in the season. Would be nice if he can find himself in a few more situations where he pitches well and is able to come out after 5 innings with a relatively low pitch count. Of course on the other hand there's the bullpen.

Yeah since the Sox won it worked out well. If the pen had blown it we'd be pissed. But a couple of blowout wins where he could come out after 5-6 would obviously be awesome for many reasons.

Also last 4 starts:

24 IP
19 H
6 ER
20 K
9 BB
2.25 ERA

6 of the BB were in one game skewing those #s. Overall pretty good
