Who would he replace once activated? Bolden? Does White play on special teams too then? They probably won't carry four RBs will they?

Bolden getting cut is as likely as trading Amendola, me thinks.

I've been thoroughly impressed by White, which on paper would give away most snaps to Lewis, so not sure what happens here.

Just to note, I am not counting on Lewis to make a real contribution (or to be more honest, not getting my hopes up). His previous injury history tells me we'll be lucky to have him for the playoffs.

And his previous injury history indicates he'll get hurt in the 2nd game he plays.

They have at times, particularly last year before Lewis got hurt. And with Derby gone, there are only two tight ends on the roster, so they have an extra game-day slot.

I don't see either White (who has played well when given the ball) or Bolden (still a decent special teams player despite one gaffe last week) being cut once Lewis is activated. That would be very short sighted, nor would it be effective roster management. 4 RB's on the roster is not the end of the world by any means.

As for the game day slot, usually these things work out for themselves. I'll also add that Volin is walking back his prediction that Lewis would see the practice field this week, so who knows.

Per one of the Reiss tweets on the sidebar of ESPN, Lewis was "present" on the practice field today. Looks to be in pads as well. Work doesn't let me link Twitter so you're just gonna have to trust me on this one.

I just took a quick look at last year. Lewis and Vollmer got hurt during the 8th game, home vs. Washington.
That reminds me: is Vollmer officially done for the year? I know we talked about how the report about the IR designation was maybe a bit premature and that he was eligible for the PUP but whatever ended up happening?

I believe he has until Week 10 to come off the PUP, after which he automatically gets transferred to injured reserve for the year.

I have not heard anything about Vollmer appearing in the locker room or at the team's stretching sessions that precede practice, so my guess it's a long shot that he comes back. There was no downside to keeping him on PUP or upside to moving him to IR at the beginning of the season, so that's probably why he's still on PUP.

Tre Jackson has been stretching, so there's still a chance he gets on the practice field before his eligibility runs out.

I almost wish they would hold Dion back until week 11 or 12 -- see if they can get him limited snaps and have him healthy for the postseason. He adds such a dynamic piece to the offense, but with his size and cutting, I feel like others that he will have 2-3 games of full action before something happens. This team is so stacked offensively in general, but he makes them that much tougher to defend when he is split out wide.

A brace is more about mental security over any real physical security. At least that's what my surgeon said after one of my checkups.
This is actually very accurate- studies have shown that brace wear after ACL reconstruction doesn't affect return to play or reinjury rate. Prophylactic brace wear by lineman can reduce MCL injuries, but that's really it.

Ya. I meant he feels well enough that he doesn't need the security of the brace. Maybe playing the psychological game too much, but I figure if a player feels as if he is recovering well this is a good sign for him and he is less likely to be timid going forward. Gets back on the field faster.

I'm just busting balls, man. I find it funny when all of us sit in our mom's basement and try to compare our injuries and recovery times and that kind of shit to pro athletes.
Excuse ME, good sir!

If a 30 year old getting injured playing flag football isn't the same as any other NFL injury, then I don't think we can see eye to eye.

Reiss: The Patriots promoted RB Tyler Gaffney from their practice squad to fill the open spot on their 53-man roster. Gaffney adds depth behind LeGarrette Blount, James White, Brandon Bolden and D.J. Foster, while also factoring into the special-teams mix.

Great news. Aside from the football aspect, I just want to see some threads on the "Recent Posts" page that aren't about the election and its aftermaths.

Are you ready for some football? Fuck, yeah, because I am beyond over the election.

This Lewis update from Mark Daniels.

Mark Daniels ‏@MarkDanielsPJ 5m5 minutes ago
Patriots released Tyler Gaffney. This paves the way for Dion Lewis to play against Seattle. I'm told Lewis is expected to be activated.

A more detailed Lewis update from Jeff Howe.

FOXBORO -- Patriots running back Dion Lewis is on track to made his season debut Sunday against the Seahawks, according to a source.

The Patriots have held out hope since last week that Lewis could be activated in time for this game, but he needed to show consistent progress leading up to the Super Bowl XLIX rematch. Things have gone according to plan, so Lewis is expected to be back on the field.

I'd love for him to get the Gronk treatment until Denver. Get him some reps, get him back into it, limit injury exposure and then 3 weeks before the playoffs get him going.

I think that's right. The Patriots.com roster seems to update pretty quickly for any transactions. It currently shows 52 on the active roster and still has Lewis on PUP, so he's not on the roster at the moment.

The possibilities would seem to be (1) they will add Lewis on Saturday and then have the option to put him on the game day roster, (2) they will sign a free agent, (3) they will elevate a practice squad player, (4) they will sign another team's practice squad player to their 53 man, or (5) they intend to roll into a game weekend with a 52-man roster. I would think of these options, number 1 seems much more probable than the others.

Edit: I suppose they could also theoretically move up Vollmer or Jackson, but I seriously doubt they'd be making room on the 53-man for either of those guys without returning them to practice first.

My thoughts exactly. He was dynamite last year -- get him there again in time for the playoffs if at all possible.
