Is there any level of suspension that you would advise Tom to accept?

Jim McNally is back with the Patriots, but retired Indy-based official Mark Baltz had suspicions about him years ago.http://www.wthr.com/story/30056286/kravitz-blogindy-based-nfl-official-baltz-was-suspicious-of-mcnally-years-ago …

Edit: atleast he has a name with the story, unlike DVN.

When was he supposed to get them?  Was he supposed to even get them at all?  Or was the official supposed to always be with the balls?

Oops - covered.

Baltz said the same thing back in (roughly) February on OTL (that's the Naqi story, by the way). This is not new; just recycled.

On @DaleHolleyWEEI, @SI_PeterKing says there are only 2-4 owners who are anti-Goodell.

That's not what he said, as if it were some verified fact. His quote: "I think hes got somewhere between two and four owners who are not in the Roger Goodell fan club."

The truth is, none of these numb nuts know anything.

Just checked back on the Kravitz "story and I am pretty sure most of the comments are members of SoSH.  I am expecting some sort of tweet in the next few hours from Kravitz indicating he was attacked (yet again) by a rabid Patriot fan base.

Kravitz is writing for a rabid and still sore Indy audience that eats this stuff up as much as we do. The genesis of that article was probably something along the lines of "hey, Indy ref nobody cares about who has nothing at stake, care to say something bad about the mean old Pats? Truth optional, innuendo preferred."

Also, lol at DVN. The biggest "fact" gleaned from his story was something Belichick already admitted to that people weren't aware of because, well, they're dumb.

edit: The problem with Kravitz is that he received so much positive reinforcement from the aftermath that it just makes sense for him to keep putting this stuff out there. Same with Doyel, who is much, much worse and gave up any attempt at journalism probably since the first time he picked up a pen.

What Kravitz understands is that a "scandal" like this only plays with the Patriots. I'd guess that 99.99% of professional football people couldn't give 12.5 shits about football pressure as a thing. We know that (rightfully so) no one would complain about Green Bay playing with footballs that were slightly over-inflated...because.

Fuck him and his fake tabloid attempts to increase his salary - and all the suckers who play into it. I don't think any links should be included on this site - if there's ever a case for copyright infringement, it's this guy.

His noise should be cancelled.

Lot of Boston media people currently calling out Kravitz for not fact-checking the number of games the linesman covered in Foxboro.

I know I have more hours into all this then Kensil, but I looked up the Colt's record when Baltz is one of the officials... they went 8-1 since 1999 and were undefeated at Indy.  the one loss was at Gillette in 99, I guess that loss stung Baltz for the rest of his NFL Career.

So the NFL, ESPN, and Kravitiz have all had their fun painting a picture of Jim McNally as a creepy-immature-liar.  It must be fun to kick the shit out of some guy that you truly know nothing about.

Regarding #32, disagreement on findings of fact, where did Judge Berman in his decision dispute the findings of fact?

Edit: Can a dope move this post over to the pinned legal thread? Thanks.

It would be great if DvN could get some of the transcipts of the interviews that never made it into the Wells report.

If he really wanted to do some investigative journalism, he could start there.

This is what happens when one starts with a conclusion and tries to reverse-engineer reasoning. It's pretty much the worst way to sift and weigh evidence.

So collectively some of us have to get a grip.

Except that there was genuine concern expressed here on each of these things, even when one allows for humor. Just trying to muffle the noise.

The media are a lost cause; you're right, it will go on all year. I don't care about them, I care about the League. Short term, the League appears to have stood down on the jihad. We'll see how long that lasts.

Edit -- and while these things can be overdone, the media stirring this pot can be beneficial. It's really, really hard to repeat for a bunch of reasons. I expect the coaching staff to milk this crap for all it's worth at appropriate times this season.

The one bright side of the media's stupidity is that we're rapidly approaching boy who cried wolf territory. By this time next year these stories will be about as believable to the public at large as alien abductions and bigfoot sightings.

While I think the Patriots lost the larger PR battle and I have no hopes the cheatriots label will go away, I think this is the case and it started with Tomlin. The NFL finally handled it correctly and shut it down immediately. Reporters like Florio (who was very anti-Patriots at the beginning of the Brady crap) won't trust much of anything coming from the NFL or ESPN and will question the reports before attacking, starting with Van Natta and this referee story.

It would be nice if ESPN would stop fanning the flames since they're clearly the leader around the country for shaping the narrative but it's nice to have Florio out there who is prominent enough himself. Also the court case is basically over and people are getting tired of it.

Besides, isn't the counter to this that the Patriots cheat everywhere? Sure, they don't have access to headsets or the balls (or Gatorade) when the game is played on the road, so they just steal the other teams play book by rummaging through the trash.

Except that the stats for the other teams in the league don't bear this out, unless you want to suggest that the Eagles (who outperform their expected by a huge margin on the road) are also cheaters. Which they aren't.

But again, no one cares about statistical rebuttals. Facts are boring.

And besides, Bruce Allen over at BSMW is saying that ESPN is preparing a follow-up hit piece on the Pats:

Van Natta, who co-wrote the story with Seth Wickersham, says they have received more than a dozen calls from various league sources since the story was released.

“When you do a story like this, you shake the tree and very ripe fruit falls into your lap,” Van Natta said. “There are some interesting leads that Seth and I are going to address. I don’t think we’re done with this just yet.

Translation: Other NFL people who saw that they could anonymously gripe about the Patriots and get it published in an “investigative report” want to get in on the action.

Don't kid yourselves, folks: the league and ESPN are out to get the team. And there will be no requirements for facts. Any anonymous gripe against the team is going to be reported as stone-cold truth by these guys.

Definitely. That column is probably the most read, most linked piece ESPN has ever done. It's sensational and total BS but it also sells. It's kind of reprehensible that the Pats are public enemy #1. Teams should be trying to emulate the Pats. Instead, they are doing the opposite, gossiping and whining.

Who cares. The more shit that comes out, the less that will stick. I hope they put out 20 more hit pieces, it'll just go from semi-serious to absurd pretty quickly. I can already guarantee that the majority of fans don't give a fuck anymore. They only care about the season at this point.

Let the hit pieces pile up and the mystique build.

I know DvN thrid hand from college. What I also know is that the part of his Presidential golfing book that he was most proud of was the part that details Clinton's golf-fibbing. ("That's a 7 not an 8, move the ball from behind the tree; that sort of stuff.) He's generally a good reporter, but he *really* like the publicity that comes from the hottakes aprt.

A genuine "reporter" would be researching the real story behind DFG: Why did the NFL lie (or, at minimum, selectively choose and stretch the facts) if they thought they had a case against New England? A real reporter would be seeking low-level sources within Exponent or interviewing the Princeton professor concerning prejudices in their findings. A real reporter would be seeking sources within the NFL that could give clues about high level executive actions leading up to the findings, and the actions of other teams. A real reporter would be striving to get his hands on transcripts. A real reporter would be pursuing the facts behind the intercepted ball, along with the facts behind the kicking ball scandal. A real reporter would be endeavoring to uncover any league-wide vendetta against New England - and which (if any) ownerships were/are involved.

For some reason, real investigative reporting in this case seems to have disappeared. It certainly can't be done by the sports writers who call themselves journalists, but I'm curious why it's not a juicy enough story for genuine journalistic investigators to pursue. Is the NFL really that powerful?

All I keep seeing is ESPN continues to push this story. Florio and others have poked holes in it and moved on. If this next "report" comes out, I could see it lasting no more than a morning. Real football is being played and people are losing interest in this drama. This is nothing more than as smear campaign and if it truly were an investigative study, they would have gotten at least one person to go on record.

Just the opposite, in my opinion. If I were an editor at a real journalism outfit, there's no way I'd want a non-sports reporter to spend precious time and resources digging into a cover up/railroad job about possibly deflated footballs.  Every town/city in America has more worthwhile stories of corruption, etc. for journalists to dig into.

I've been thinking the same myself, but perhaps the answer is that the NFL really doesn't matter enough for a "real journalist" to devote the time and energy to doing this sort of work Woodward and Bernstein style.

Or talk to the NFL exec who was fired for stealing game balls in the AFCCG to sell them for his own profit. I'd love to hear from him and his contribution ot the Integrity Of The Game that we all hold so dear.

I'd also to love to hear directly from a single one of these un-named sources who are airing their dirty Pats laundry in public but anonymously. Whether it's a former player or former Pats employee, let's see them in public with their name and face and listen to them describe exactly what they did. Put up or shut up.
