How do I know when it's back to 70F?  When the psi is back to 12.5 is that a good enough indicator that the temp is back to 70?  I don't really have a means of measuring the temperature of the air inside the ball.
I'd say that it's a safe bet that when the pressure appears to stabilize, it's reached equilibrium.

Yeah, when the PSI's back up it should be back to original temp.  Or just wait a couple of hours.  You could even do it dry one day and wet the next, with plenty of time to stabilize in between.

Currently watching Boomer and Carton. Wow, Carton has exactly the NY media personality I've learned to despise, yet somehow he has completely the reasonable take on this story. I can't imagine this is doing him any favors with his NYC fanbase.

OTOH, perhaps this is all calculated to drive clicks and listenership, in much the same way CHB trolls his native audience.
Carton's schtick is he always takes the opposite POV to Francesa.

I think we are all getting a small taste of what it must be like to be a muslim or an african american watching FOX news.  You're just guilty. Why can't you just admit you are guilty?  I know there is no "evidence" that you are guilty but there is a lot of stuff that is kind of sort of like evidence if we look at it through this very biased prism called "I think you're guilty".  No matter what you say or do I will know you are guilty.   I mean, 90 seconds in a bathroom is more than enough time for you to cheat.

There is a bit of the McCarthy hearings seasoned in as well.  Where this giant, all knowing, all powerful communist machine is lurking behind the scenes.   And everyone is jumping on the blacklist bandwagon.   BB is so brilliant that he must be able to  control the direction of every blade of fake grass in Gillette.  He must be able to manage even the smallest detail.  He picks the socks his team wears and makes sure which one goes on the right foot and which one goes on the left of every player.   I think part of the problem is that people have become so lazy and stupid that the only way they can make sense of real intelligence is to turn it into something "other".  He's not just super talented and hard working, he's some kind of genius mastermind who controls everything on the team with his mind and when he gets to something he can't control with his dark powers he just cheats to get that done too.

Honestly, this whole thing is a fucking embarrassment.

A couple of small points.  First, at the NFL experience, they are selling lots of different Wilson balls, some of which purport to be official game balls and some of which are commemorative balls.  The latter are clearly not marketed as game balls, but they are full size Wilson balls with like the team names or Arizona themed stuff on them and they cost a bunch -- like $80 to $100.  Interestingly, the following appears above the valve:  "Inflate to 7 to 9 psi".

Anyway, I'll be conducting some experiments tonight.  I plan to take a ball and fill it to exactly 12.5 psi in a 70 degree environment.  I then will put it in a 45 degree environment for 1 hour and 30 minutes, at which point I will measure the psi.  I will then put it in the 70 degree environment and continue to take measurements every 2 minutes.  If anyone wants to add to the experiment, please let me know.

Every time you stick the needle into the valve it's going to let a bit of air out, isn't it?

Ok, good point.  What I will do, then, is begin with a control test.  I will inflate the ball to 12.5 psi and remove the gauge.  I will then insert and remove the gauge 10 times and take the measurement after the 10th time.  I will do this three trials.  I'll take the average psi reduction from doing this three times (if there is a measurable one) and then I'll divide by 10 and use whatever number I get as a ballpark for the psi lost as a result of sticking the ball.

Alternatively, you could stick the needle in once and just leave it in there for the duration of the experiment.

Ha! Most likely the Pats balls weren't even under-inflated, but it just shows you how psyched out the Colts and other teams are.

Mortensen said today the Colts put the issue of under-inflated balls on the pre-game alert sheet given to the officials right before the AFC championship game. Is it really too much to believe that the Colts, just for that game, pumped up their own footballs a bit more than they usually would?

I'm sure Andrew Luck would have been reaaaaaaly happy that the meticulous preparation that goes into making every one of his footballs right up to his exact specifications just got thrown out the window because Indy's management was playing a game of Gotcha with the Patriots.

Just to refresh everyone's memory, Andrew Luck went 12-33 (36.4%), 126 yds, 0 td, 2 int in the AFCCG.

i know you didn't say exactly that, but i just cringe any time a group of (generally) privileged and comfortable people start equating their experiences (as fans of a SPORTS TEAM) with being the victim of a centuries-long system of brutalization, expropriation and murder. like, i get that the apparent presumption of guilt is sort of equivalent, but there are lots of "sort of" equivalencies in life, and some of them are not only irrelevant, but kind of offensive. this is one of those. even though you qualified it and said "just a tiny taste..." etc. i just don't want to go there.

i'm not calling you a racist or anything like that, please don't take it that way. i just think it's a tone deaf analogy and it takes the whole persecution angle a step too far. i'm as pissed as anyone about how this is being handled, but let's keep it in perspective.

I just made the mistake of listening to "Mad Dog radio" on the way home.  Chris Russo is the worst hack out there, he makes Shaughnessy sound good.  A Patriots fan called and said how can you say they are guilty with no evidence, and all he could do was scream about spygate.  He wouldn't even hear anything else.  I literally listened for 5 minutes and my head is ready to explode.

He specifically made an analogy to the feelings of certain people watching FOX news. He said nothing about the long history of discrimination against Blacks.

It still stuns me that Francesa was so much better when he was partnered with Russo, because Russo himself is one of the dumbest humans breathing air.

Together they were good radio.  Apart they are both drooling morons.

Haha.  Think about all of us Pats' fans and how we endure profiling based on our football teams' success.  To steal from Daniel Tosh upon getting his pants wet "is this how the people in New Orleans felt?!  Because this is terrible!!!"

This thread is amazing and I am going to be sad when it quiets down.

So just to get this straight - a multibillion dollar enterprise has now spent eight days trying to determine the exact PSI of some footballs.  They have nothing so far, and are going to continue to investigate for several more weeks.

Is that about right?  Just want to confirm how absolutely cuckoo bananas this is.

King completely believes BB. Says a coach said BB would never be that strident if he was lying. Also says Brady is one of the most honorable people he knows. Extolling the virtues of his team-orientation.

Wants to see forensic proof and can't believe they will "come down with the hammer" unless there's some proof (a la Kraft).

Where the hell was ANY of this while the pitchforks were out for the last WEEK?

Also dismissing "all the other stuff" the Pats supposedly have done – including the deceptive stuff against Balt. This is quite the exoneration.

Yes, and it can't be repeated enough: They couldn't send a Yellow Taxi over to Rice's attorney's office to pick up a video.

Apparently he's getting roasted by Pats fans. He was on with Mike Giardi last night, and Giardi was pleading for folks to lay off Bob. Kravitz said, "What was it colder on the Pats side than on the Colts?"

I'm looking forward to Friday when, thanks to casual day, I am permitted to wear a jersey to work in honor of the big game.  I will be wearing my Patriots Jersey, Patriots hat and I have an under inflated football in my car that has been in the trunk since our Turkey Bowl game.  It wasn't flat when I put it in there but given the temperature it now feels pretty low.  I wonder what the pressure will be when it gets back to room temp.

King was beating the "Pats have to be guilty" thing when Florio was there leading the charge, and then completely flipped the switch in the other direction when Florio got up to leave. That was painful.

What did he say?

He was all about the why did the Colts balls not change, refs always measure the balls properly pregame, and what did this guy do in the bathroom, and then Florio left and he said BB, Brady, and Kraft were all telling the truth and he's never known them to be liars. He also ripped on the NFL if this was a sting operation and said it would be a tremendous black eye for the league. He was all over the place.

Florio was every bit of Florio that you would come to expect. Said they had "circumstantial proof" in this case and the league only need a preponderance of the evidence. Blah blah blah.

I still wonder why the bigger question is why the Colts balls, if measured, didn't abide by the laws of science, but Bill Nye said Pats lied and that's not how science works, so...

I think it's probably because they never actually measured the Colts footballs at halftime.

Felger........"Just because I work here, doesn't mean I have to believe what they say.  I'm sorry.  I don't give them the benefit of the doubt.  I just don't"

Bedard......."I don't trust the NFL.  In the past few years, that's what I've learned.

Mazz......"What motivation does the league have to screw the NFL's model franchise?"

Bedard did say at the end that this is not some little thing and thinks it is serious.  Said that the league isn't taking something little and trying to make a big deal of it.  Told everybody to just wait and hear what comes out (although he wasn't acting like he knew more than anyone else.
