#DFG: Canceling the Noise

Is there any level of suspension that you would advise Tom to accept?

Pete Carroll

Carroll said he doesn't expect the Patriots to lose focus this week because of the controversy.
"I think it's common when you feel like you're under attack it draws you closer," Carroll said. "I would suspect those guys will rally together. We understand it's a distraction they don't want, but I'm sure they're handling it in the best way possible. That's all you can do right now."

One of my favorite players in the league for sure. Won't ever be a Patriot, which would be a shame. Remember that Revis once called BB a jerk.

Yeah.  But in a thread about the counterproductivity of uncertainly sourced information concerning premature opinions of as yet undiscovered facts, people still need their beast to be fed.

So Sherman doesn't think the Patriots will be punished because the league office is too worried about Lynch's ball grabbing?

Is that an attempt at "we're more unjustly persecuted than you!!?!?"

Yes, love him as well. Very smart guy, obviously a student of the game and an awesome player. The league needs more guys like him, he's great and entertaining.
Sherman is the most Belichickian of all NFL players and it's really not close.

Ehh...he's a huge self-promoter and media hound which is the antithesis of Belichick.

The NY Daily News cover is better today. It is a picture of BB calling him "The Nutty Professor". Tried to post it but it won't let me.

Tom E.Curran reported earlier that "multiple sources" confirm Kensil is the lead guy on the investigation:

http://www.csnne.com/new-england-patriots/jets-connection-appearing-deflategate-probe

Multiple sources have indicated that Kensil is the driving force behind the investigation and that his interest in deflated balls did not begin in January but actually began earlier in the year.

Parsing the article, it does not come out and state that a sting was in progress (and sort of implies otherwise), although Kensil was at the game in Foxboro.

In the works for weeks and possibly months and they still have no evidence. I'm surprised the Jets had a history of futility with him in the front office.

But he's presumeably alright with his owner's company shelling out $400 million to be an official league sponsor?

the premise that there can be a 'conflict of interest', in the procedural sense, between the commissioner and an owner is kinda batshit.  He's their employee.

Think again about Belichick's comment about there being other things the league needed to investigate.

He probably won't read it but I sent this message to Bill Nye.  The quote I used was listed as his favorite quote.

So disappointed in you, you are supposed to be helping America get smarter, not mislead them. I know you are a Seahawks fan but I would expect you to be a voice of reason and science in this country first. You are being used across the TV and internet to "disprove" the ideal gas law. Hope you are proud. Can't believe you would risk your credibility over something like this. -Family of ex-Bill Nye fans
PS. let me leave you with a quote, I think you've heard it before - "One test is worth a thousand expert opinions." Tex Johnston, Boeing 707 test pilot

Not sure BB meant that as ominously as you are taking it. He may have just meant ask around the league and you'll find many people are aware that the ball is under 12.5 PSI in many games {without any tampering}.

From USA Today:

What if the Patriots are telling the truth?

Let's get this out of the way before one week of weirdness gives way to another here at Super Bowl XLIX:
Any suggestion the New England Patriots have spent the past 15 years cheating their way to the top is unfounded at best, ludicrous at worst.
You don't win like the Patriots continue to win – 12 consecutive 10-win seasons, six Super Bowl appearances, three titles with a fourth on the line Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks – because you videotaped some signals and played with some underinflated footballs.

You win because you have a brilliant coach and quarterback. You win because you're prepared. You win because you are constantly one step ahead of the opponent, even if that consistency fuels speculation you're doing something untoward to get the edge.

What he said was this: "I think there are a number of things that need to be looked into on a number of levels, but thats not for this conversation. Im sure it will be taken up at another point in time."

I don't see how you could read that as a plea from BB to check how often the ball is under 12.5. The ball is under 12.5 on a regular basis in the winter because science. There aren't many different levels there, just physics.

The levels he is referring to are: who kicked off this investigation, why was it started, why was it handled incompetently, was there malice involved, who leaked misinformation, etc.

If it was a sting, it might be the worst one ever.

I mean, "The Sting II " was really bad. They had to have known that a third one would be even worse.

When you've got a 62 year old retired dentist (Walt Anderson) running the sting you know shit's going to be done right.

Which will still be more interesting than Russell Wilson talking about how Jesus made him throw 4 picks in the championship game to set up the comeback.

I love this statement from ESPN about the Chad Ford "incident" in light of the past week of hysterics:

After reviewing the post on Reddit today, we have found that changes were made manually to Chad Ford’s NBA Draft prospects rankings.   We have not been able to determine who made the changes, or when.  We have talked to Chad Ford, who strongly denies any involvement, and based on his past work and professionalism, we believe him.  Our review will continue but it is unclear at this time if we will be able to ascertain who was responsible.

Thanks for sharing these insights, TS, and keep them coming.

But am I to take from this that the commissioner weighs (or perhaps even solicits) feedback from owners when determining sanctions?

Understand that at the end of the day they pay his $44M, but seems very odd that league investigations and discipline would factor in how Owners X & Y think Owner Z should be punished (unless there is a specific advisory committee for that purpose).

Goodell has his own issues and biases, but generally speaking, seems that independence in this regard would be a key element of a commissioner's job description.

What am I missing? Why does he have to herd cats to come to a decision (once guilt is established)?

Or is it simply that after screwing up the Rice process so completely, he's in a weak position and needs to ensure he has sufficient support to keep his job?

Edit: damn autocorrect
