Pascal Dupuis has essentially retired. Has had lingering issues due to a blood clot and apparently the medication program they had him on hasn't worked as anticipated. He will no longer play hockey.

BOG meetings are being held this week. Notable news so far:

- They eliminated the draft pick compensation for coaches and executives. Lasted all of a year, but kudos to the Bruins for squeezing a 2nd round pick out of the Oilers.

- Cap could go to $74.5 million next season, but this is probably optimistic. Best to assume no raise.

- Nothing official on expansion, but it is still in the works. GM's are curious/need to know how an expansion draft would work if/when expansion happens so that they can plan accordingly. Nothing has leaked yet, but apparently they were given a general idea of how it would be handled. Curious to see if some details leak.

Mike Johnston was finally fired by the Penguins - your old coach Mike Sullivan (who was 18-5 in Wilkes Barre this season) is the new coach.

Some details on the Stamkos situation that's simmering down in Tampa. Apparently he doesn't like Cooper, which may be rooted in Cooper moving Stamkos to the wing. Things haven't been great down there in a while, and rumor is Tampa and Buffalo talked about Stamkos for the Eichel pick back at the draft, which may have been veto'd by Stamkos himself (Buffalo wanted him extended first).

Interesting stuff. The more stories that come out, the more it seems clear he's leaving Tampa. I can't think of the last time a 25 year old top 5 player hit the free agent market. I guess Kovalchuk is the closest comp.

Is it too much to wish Tampa trades him to the Bruins? My guess is it has to start with Krejci and Pastrnak and go from there.

Nah, if he gets traded it won't be for much. 1st and a prospect, then probably a conditional pick. Nobody is going to give up much for a 25-30 game rental.

I was thinking some teams may not trade for him unless he agrees to sign, which in that case the return would be a lot greater. But I suppose he could be traded as a rental as well.

And if they do trade him it won't be to the Bruins. Tampa's owner (and Red Sox minority owner) Jeffrey Vinik can't take that PR hit down there. He's probably going to free agency so any team will have the chance to sign him if they're willing to give him Toews/Kane money.

Penguins traded Rob Scuderi (1/3 retained) to Chicago for Trevor Daley. Head scratcher for the Blackhawks.

Daley had been bad but not Scuderi-levels of bad... And for only a shade over $1m in cap relief over the next two years that's a real strange one for Chicago.

Regarding Stamkos...
If Tampa feels they can make the playoffs, it’s unlikely they will trade him. Remember, they were one of the cup favorites coming into the season. Anything can happen if you squeak in.
Now, if Tampa is well out of the race by the time the deadline rolls around, they’ll want to get at least a draft pick or two for him (say a #1 and a prospect). I think he has an NTC, but he would likely waive it for a (possible last) shot at the cup.
Then it’s Toronto or bust on July 1st as the Leafs open up their bulging wallet for him.

Panthers send Dave Bolland to the AHL. He's got a $5.5 million cap hit through 2019.

Also Zack Kassian had been reinstated.

Anton Khudobin was also waived, and cleared waivers as well.

Kind of shocking, I thought he was at least good enough to be a starter somewhere.
That's got to be the cap, right? $2.25 million and his deal is up this year. That's a very expensive third-string goalie, and probably too expensive as the back-up because a team will eat salary waiving their own current back-up.

Which I think is among the things a salary cap is kind of supposed to do.

WTF do you do if you are Tampa here? Keep him and hope for a run, or deal him before the deadline for whatever you can get? Good luck figuring that one out, Stevie.
Fortunately for him he has time to watch the situation with the deadline still two months away, but as we get near the deadline if they are still out of the playoff picture like they currently are, I think its a move they have to make for the future of the franchise - all signs point to Stamkos leaving in FA anyways, holding on with a marginal chance of winning a Cup instead of leveraging that asset can set the franchise back years.

In other possible trade news, it is looking like Ryan Johansen won't be in Columbus much longer. Torts being Torts, he benched Johansen in the 3rd period of their last game and now Dreger says Johansen will likely be a healthy scratch tonight.

Why do teams hire Tortorella? His act has worn completely thin and he ruins talents now. Stupid move by Columbus in my opinion.

I missed this when it happened, but the NHL is eliminating the coach/executive compensation rule. This is how the Bruins got the 2016/2017 2nd round pick from the Oilers for Chiarelli. (Specifically, Edmonton owes the B's a 2016 2nd rounder, but they can delay it a year to 2017 if they elect).

Kekalainen's phone must be ringing off the hook. His $4M cap hit isn't peanuts, but I doubt there are many teams that wouldn't jump to add him given the opportunity. At some point, Torts has to get the Keenan treatment and not see any more NHL coaching opportunities.

I liked Torts when he did playoff work last season post-Cannucks firing. I hope that's his eventual landing spot where he sticks.

This quote from the article cited in the article really says all we need to know about the PERSON PK is:

"I have the ability as of right now to encourage other people to get involved," Subban said. "I may not always have that ability to get people to donate money and join my charity or my foundation or my events. But right now I do, so I'm trying to capitalize on that. Who knows? Hopefully I have that for the rest of my life, but why not do it now?"
It'll never happen because he grew up a Habs fan despite living in Toronto, but he might be the ultimate "Nature v. Nurture" test case for diving entitlement among NHL players.
