Steve Sarkisian is the new USC coach.  Not exactly the home run hire that they were going for IMO.  Sark is a know quantity to USC officials since he served under Pete Carroll.  34-29 career record at Washington.

Confirming reports: Washington's Steve Sarkisian accepts USC coaching job, per person familiar with the decision.

Guess they're going to try and recapture that Carroll-era magic through one way or the other.

Wonder where Coach O ends up. Apparently Wake Forest has called a press conference for 4:15 today. Ed Orgeron at Wake would be fantastic from an entertainment standpoint.

This is a series of tweets from LA Times USC beat writer Scott Wolf.  He is extremely tuned into that program.  He says Coach O is out.

Steve Sarkisian's agreed to a 5-year deal per #USC sources

InsideUSC ‏@InsideUSC 14m
A #USC source told me Steve Sarkisian wants Tosh Lupoi to be defensive line coach. That could explain Ed Orgeron situation

InsideUSC ‏@InsideUSC 2m
Washington linebackers coach Peter Sirmon also strong candidate to follow to #USC, per source

I'm told #USC liked Vanderbilt coach James Franklin. Sarkisian's ties and Pac-12 experience won out. We'll see if it works

Really, Washington?

Why do you say that?

He likes that area of the country, he apparently tried to get USC and they went a different way, there won't be an insane amount of pressure there, and if he's confident in his abilities, he can win. Oh, and he's getting paid.

You mean, SC tried to get him. They just did UW a hell of a favor

FWIW

Haden was on the radio in LA yesterday and said he had a list of 20 candidates, whittled it down to 5 and then interviewed them. He interviewed Sark last and indicated he was a top guy throughout. He said he needed to interview the other guys to confirm that Sark was the guy. So it is not surprising he spoke with Petersen but if even half if what he said was true, Petersen was not his first choice.

He also spoke about his meeting with Orgeron. He said it was tense and wouldn't want to have to deal with that again. He confirmed he offered Orgeron a top asst job but Orgeron immediately turned it down and resigned.

Finally he indicated he agreed to stay as AD while the program remained on probation but would not commit beyond that.

From what I've heard, a lot of it had to do with the way USC wants to run the program. Sark was more willing to have the program be open which is important for dealing with boosters and what not. Petersen's vision conflicted with this.

I think that Washington significantly upgraded their coaching situation, and I'd agree with the USC doing them a favor view point.

Almost nothing out there for up-and-coming head coaches this year, right?  Boise will probably promote from within, then there is Wake Forest and UConn remaining, plus a MAC job or two?

Boise is taking a hard look at former OC Harsin who is currently the HC at Arky State and former DC Wilcox who is (was?) at Wazzu from what I've heard.  The issue with Harsin is a buy-out.

As far as other jobs go, Texas fans are currently monitoring Saban (both Nick and Terry) flights a la LeBron.   However (assuming Mack is gone which seems pretty safe), I could see them going after a Franklin or Anderson for their job.

Texas could really have its pick of almost any coach in the country.  I don't think Urban would leave Ohio State, but I could see any other coach in any other job jumping at the chance for this one.

How about Kevin Sumlin?  - assuming Saban isn't already a lock.....

Mack Brown has denied a report that he will step down as Texas' coach.

Brown, who was recruiting on Tuesday, refuted a report by Orangebloods.com, which cited high-level sources stating that he would step down after 16 years as the Longhorns' coach.

"I haven't seen (the) article," Brown wrote in a text message to the web site, Horns247. "I'm in Florida recruiting. If I had decided to step down, I sure wouldn't be killing myself down here. I have not decided to step down."

I'd think these would be some of the candidates: James Franklin, Mike Dantonio, Mike Gundy, Jon Gruden, Bob Stoops, and David Shaw.  Keep in mind Todd Graham of ASU since the new AD came from there.

Forgot that Kelly has a show-cause.

Todd Graham would be considered a major whiff of a hire in the eyes of many supporters., who are looking for a bigger name. I think the only way it could happen is if all of Texas top 2 tiers of candidates reject them.

Sumlin just signed a longterm extension.

Texas hiring Bob Stoops? The riots (I'd be leading one here) would be tremendous.

Boise will either be Wilcox with Lupoi from Washington or Koetter from the Atlanta Falcons. Both former Boise guys.

He hasn't signed it yet, just "agreed" which is why the Texans are still after him

I'm hearing from some people down in Alabama that it's going to be Saban.

DISCLAIMER: This isn't someone deep in the program down there, but it's someone that knows a few people and definitely has access to this kind of info if it is leaking out.

Not surprising, but I don't get why Saban wants the job. It could also be a ploy to get more money out of Bama.

He really can't accomplish anything else at Alabama.

If he can go to Texas and do what he did at Alabama--and win a National Championship at a third school--he might go down as the best college coach ever.

It makes perfect sense to me.

Money, prestige and to cement himself as the greatest college football coach ever (if he can win a title). Remember UT is the richest football program in the country by a large margin.

I think the biggest draw would be the chance for him to utterly and totally dominate college football. Mack was a good CEO and person, but in the richest recruiting hotbed where UT gets the recruit they want 95 percent of the time in the richest school terms of money generated by the team, there's no excuse why Texas hasn't been winning conference titles every other year -- they have the best combination of facilities, recruiting territory and money.

With Saban, he could crush the Big 12, probably with Mack's guys next year, and in the medium term virtually lock-up the chance to plan for a championship every year until he steps down, no hyperbole. Not play for a championship every other year like at Bama, but exceed the dynasty he's created at Bama.
