Arroyo never really felt like he was able to spread his wings on this team. Lots of badly timed injuries and having an at-best average glove probably didn't help at a time when the defense was sputtering. But seemed seemed like a good teammate. Best of luck to him.

Second base was right there for him to win, but he was constantly injured.
Much like Hernandez, he seemed like a hard guy to dislike. Oh well. Hopefully greener pastures await.
Urias is the first shoe; I assume Chang goes when Story returns? Or do they keep Chang for defense at the Spinal Tap drummer position?

His fate was sealed when they decided to see if they could get by with Turner at 2B.

Chang or Reyes goes when Story returns

Seemed like a good guy and, on a human level, it's never good to see someone lose their job. But from a baseball perspective, it was time.

Going to be an interesting choice there. Chang is a terrible hitter but he plays a good shortstop. If they DFA him when Story returns, and then Story suffers a setback or another injury, the Sox might be up a certain creek without a certain paddle. But all moves are risks.

Arroyo may well get picked up. He's still decently young.

I like Arroyo, but he hasn't played very well this year, and we need someone good defensively at SS even when Story gets back, as he will have to be rested some days. Seems like either Chang or Reyes will get DFA'd then. Reyes seems like the more helpful of the 2 to have on the bench with an occasional start at SS.
Arroyo will get picked up by somebody, but it wasn't working here this year.

We're going to be seeing one more positional player DFA (Story) and 3 pitching DFAs (Sale, Houck, Whitlock) in the next week or so. Players should be playing for their jobs and playing time, no more time to mess around.

Some pitchers have options right? At least I think so. If that is the case, I don't think it is a guaranteed 3 pitching DFAs.

Only need one "pitching" DFA to make room for Sale as he's on the 60-day IL. They can also just put Kluber on the 60-day IL since they've already shut him down from his rehab assignment. They can option guys (Murphy, Jacques) to create 26-man space for Houck and Whitlock.

Murphy has pitched well so far. We need to try to win now, over trying to control as many players as possible. Arroyo is an example of this-- they probably feel like he is a better overall player than Chang or Reyes, but he doesn't fit in as well with what we need right this minute.

Sure Jacques will go down off the 26, but Bleier has been much worse than Murphy (of course Murphy's success may not continue, and Bleier's been hurt by the IF defense, etc.) but Joely will probably be back fairly soon as well and another spot in the 26 will be needed then too.

And practically, Murphy, Bleier, Jacques etc. should be thinking that they need to pitch well to keep their jobs, whether they get DFA'd or sent down. Either way, they are on the bubble now and if they suck hopefully they won't be in the bigs anymore for a while at least.

There is always so much fluidity with middle-relief pitching. The nature of the business. They come and go like a revolving door.

Arroyo was by all accounts a good clubhouse guy, but he never quite made that leap to being an everyday player. Average fielding and way too many foolish outs hacking at the first pitch. Hopefully he'll catch on outside of the division.

You could tell after his double play the other day that he probably knew this was coming. I wish him well wherever he ends up.

Seems like a good guy. Agree it's not like anyone is rooting for anyone else to lose their job. But he just wasn't a particularly good Major League baseball player; at least as a starter, has never been healthy enough to look at any data as that beyond a small sample size, and the numbers in aggregate (for his career) are not good. Glad his 60 games of best performance and health came in a season where it helped the team.

Should have been done weeks ago, but better late than not at all.

Good luck, and hope he catches on somewhere that has an everyday SS and everyday 2b that are healthy and can carry him as a back up that plays every 8 days at one position and every 8 days at the other or however the math works out; that's his niche.

Arroyo hasn’t had a great year and he can rarely stay healthy, but Bloom is taking a shot in the dark because Arroyo’s bat has been far better than Urias this season.

I would guess that Arroyo gets picked up and I hope he finally has a fully healthy season.

Even hitting .145, Urias's OBP is 30 points higher than Arroyo's. The most likely outcome, IMO, is that Urias will suck, but it's doubtful he'll suck more than Arroyo did.

None of Chang/Reyes/Arroyo are good, so it's hard to get too worked up about which one was going to be DFA'd. I would have guessed that Arroyo would have stuck around longer than the other two but, again, no big deal

Sure, but if both are healthy there's really no comparison.

Arroyo: 687 PA, 92 wRC+
Urias: 1110 PA, 108 wRC+

Say what you will about Bloom, he certainly seems to make decisions for this organization without allowing emotion to get in the way.
Very true. It's probably also why his communication skills are viewed less than favorably by most

This is from MLBTR; I hope they have this right

He and the Red Sox agreed to a $2MM salary over the winter, avoiding arbitration. He’s still owed about $624K of that sum. If he’s claimed on waivers, the new team will pick up the remainder of that tab but also retain the right to control Arroyo through the 2024 season — his final year of arbitration eligibility. If he’s unclaimed, he has the right to reject an outright assignment in favor of free agency.

However, Arroyo is just days shy of reaching five years of service time, meaning that he can’t yet reject the assignment and retain the rest of his salary. Had he been designated even a week later, he’d have that right. As such, if he’s unclaimed on waivers, he’ll surely accept the outright assignment to keep that salary. He’d then be able to become a free agent at season’s end (assuming the Red Sox don’t add him back to the 40-man roster).

With that bottom third, does Casas see a single pitch in the zone tonight?

Arroyo seems like a kid that will sign with the Orioles or Blue Jays (they probably don’t need an IF, but the point stands) and then hit like a game-winning double against us.

It's really weird how internet discussions of replacement level middle infielders getting cut almost always lead to T.S. Eliot. It's like an Illuminati Godwin principle.

I liked Arroyo. He had a few decent moments and seemed like a decent guy. Weirdly slow, though. I guess you just expect middle infielders to have some speed, and I found myself often wondering, "how did he not beat that out," or "why is he only on second?"

I've been following Arroyo since he was a hot prospect for the Giants. Some guys' bodies just can't tolerate the day-to-day rigors of the MLB. It's a real shame.

T.S. Elliott wrote about Babe Ruth eating hot dogs?
He often wrote deeply in allegory, so perhaps.

Though I think there's a rumor that Eliot was a Red Sox fan and became disenchanted when the Sox sold Ruth. Not just a little -- I'm talking like JMOH and Mookie level devastation. Apparently, he refused to speak of the Sox for years after.

Arroyo had good moments and helped (when he was in the lineup) to move the Sox forward. By all accounts he was a good clubhouse guy. I wish him well, he was/is easy to like.

Had a nice 1 fWAR season in 2021 (despite only 300 PA) yet somehow was never able to repeat that here. He'll probably turn it around again for some other team.

I bet he lands back on the Giants. They have a need.
When we were playing the Giants last week, I was watching their broadcast, and they were playing video highlights of when Arroyo first came up. It would be a good match-up as they still seem to love him.

In 1907, Boston performed slightly better (the Americans moved all the way up in the standings to seventh place), but Eliot's grim outlook became even more grim, as reflected in the opening lines of the Ur-Prufrock manuscript. [Reading the article might be a good idea].

The Wasteland Called Huntington Grounds:
Not Quite A Love Song

Let us go then, you and me
To see
The Boston Americans play
Like patients etherized upon a table.
Let us go through half-deserted streets
To claim our seats
On aisles covered by peanut shells.
Let us cheer and wave our hankies:
Shall we ever beat the New York Yankees?

In the bleachers, a woman wags her tongue,
Talking of the great Cy Young.

The starting pitcher rubbed the ball upon his pants,
The grinning batter choked up upon his bat,
Licked his tongue into the corners of his mouth,
Lingered over home plate that stood in drains,
Smashed the pitch high into the yellow air,
When the shortstop made a sudden leap,
But seeing that it was a soft September night,
Dropped back to earth, and fell asleep.

And indeed will there be a time
For the home team to come back?
Yes. There will be time, there will be time
If the pitcher will bear down,
And drop a sweeping curve over the plate,
Time to hit and time to field,
Time for the manager to make a hundred indecisions
Before the partaking of hot dogs and beer.
