Hard to believe that's the best he could get.  Didn't the Giants supposedly offer him something like 5/$110?

I think he did relatively well, this late in the game. Some people here were thinking 3/$50, apparently the Cubs offered something around 3/$60m..The $110m offer had been rumoured, it's not clear that he actually got that offer. The giants' offer was more around 4/$80m according to various reports, and that was at/around the time of the Lester contract. They moved on a long time ago.

The Padres are winning the winter, but I'm not convinced all these moves will look that great in 24 months. And if I'm Ruben Amaro, I pray that a Sox pitcher gets injured, and that Hamels does not..

Would have given him that in a heart beat, but seems he wanted to be out west. Padres are going to be quick contenders. And yet again Amaro over plays his hand.

So... who else is in on Hamels, now?

He has to just pray that some contender's pitcher gets injured.  It would have to be a particular set of circumstances for the Sox to acceded to his demands for Hamels, IMO.

I think two things. One, that the Sox might be interested in a pitcher whether one gets hurt or not. Two, that there is almost no situation that will make the Sox willing to give up Swihart for Hamels. And I guess that means three, I think the Sox would be far more interested in Lee if he can prove he's healthy.

I think the next couple months will show if Gillick has any pull left in that organization. It has to be very hard to watch Amaro blow this with Hamels. The Sox could help the Phils future so much even without Swihart.

While we all love to make fun of him, all things considered, I think Amaro is probably playing this about as well as he can. Every other impact starter is off the board, and there are still teams who could use someone of Hamels's caliber. He'll get two impact young players for him at least. Off the top of my head, I could see Toronto, Texas, San Francisco, and Anaheim still being very much involved on this. Maybe even St. Louis. Worst comes to worst, they hang on to him; if he stays healthy, that's not really a problem.

I don't think the Red Sox will ultimately pull the trigger, though, which is probably okay.

Turns out Shields' deal is backloaded and contains an opt out after 2 years.

No details on the first two years for some reason (total of $33M), but he'll get $21M each of the last two years and there's a $2M buyout of his option year.

That opt out would have made it sticky for him to come to Boston if he wanted to and if the Sox would have wanted him.

So if he really pitches brilliantly, he can opt out right after a whole bunch of really high ticket guys have readjusted the market.

Remind me again why I'm not a pitcher.

No kidding. Although backloading the deal makes it affordable for SD those first 2 years, so it works out well for both, unless he really starts crumbling in year 2.

Separate question. Who starts for this team Opening Day?

Answer 1 - It really doesn't matter.
Answer 2 - Buchholz, most likely. He's the Red Sox vet on that rotation, maybe giving him more explicit (if symbolic) responsibility will lead him to pitch like an ace. That or he'll crumble under the pressure..

Not that this is meant to be an indication of who I expect to be the most effective next year, but Buchholz seems like the only answer.
