Speier and Bradford spend a chunk of the hour talking about the RS pitching. On a snow day, this is very listenable and informative. http://media.weei.com/a/101638254/hot-stove-show-02-05-15.htm

Papelbon's Poutine said:Would have given him that in a heart beat, but seems he wanted to be out west. Padres are going to be quick contenders. And yet again Amaro over plays his hand.

I think he did relatively well, this late in the game. Some people here were thinking 3/$50, apparently the Cubs offered something around 3/$60m..The $110m offer had been rumoured, it's not clear that he actually got that offer. The giants' offer was more around 4/$80m according to various reports, and that was at/around the time of the Lester contract. They moved on a long time ago.
The Padres are winning the winter, but I'm not convinced all these moves will look that great in 24 months. And if I'm Ruben Amaro, I pray that a Sox pitcher gets injured, and that Hamels does not..

DanoooME said:Turns out Shields' deal is backloaded and contains an opt out after 2 years.
No details on the first two years for some reason (total of $33M), but he'll get $21M each of the last two years and there's a $2M buyout of his option year.
That opt out would have made it sticky for him to come to Boston if he wanted to and if the Sox would have wanted him.
No kidding. Although backloading the deal makes it affordable for SD those first 2 years, so it works out well for both, unless he really starts crumbling in year 2.Rasputin said:So if he really pitches brilliantly, he can opt out right after a whole bunch of really high ticket guys have readjusted the market.
Remind me again why I'm not a pitcher.
