Just re-reading the thread and wondered about this. Bellinger throws left-handed. The hit had a low bounce so, at best, Bellinger has to backhand it while bending over. Since they weren't playing Phillips to pull, that hit could have gone through and it would have been a nice clean finish
I don’t think handedness of the centerfielder was an issue. Softly hit ball, bounced three or four times before Taylor muffed it coming in on it. Had Bellinger been in he would have had time to square up on it.
I don’t see how the scorer didn’t give Smith an error for missing that catch. It’s not a great throw, but it’s a catchable throw. He just rushed it. We see it every Sunday in football games, receivers looking up before securing the catch. Got to have the ball to make an out.
And Jansen should have been backing up somewhere, but even if he’s backing up home, there’s no way they get Rice-a-Roni on that play.
