They need a 40 man spot, I wonder if they try to get him through waivers. He's been awful so far this year.

Already on the 40 per the MLB site. As of the moment it's at 44 with 5 on the 60-day. Meaning they can add one of Short or Smith but need to make a move to add the second. (Smith is pending a physical, so that's probably not going to happen today.)

Horn is safe for now; the necessary DFA ended up being other recent acquisition Vladimir Gutierrez.

VG essentially walked himself off the Wooosox
Ironically, poor performance in Worcester could help keep him in Worcester, because if no one claims him (and has a 40 man spot for him), BOS can send him back to Worcester without taking up a 40 man spot.

Cashman has been doing a ton of this since last winter, right now I count 5 guys on NY's AAA team who were claimed, added to the 40 man, later DFAd, not claimed by anyone else, and thus kept by NY in AAA without having to be on the 40 man. Jeter Downs is probably the one of those doing the best, .868 OPS while playing SS/2B/3B.

I thought the Gutierrez DFA made room for Short/Smith, which means they'll still need one for BHorn once he passes the physical.
Horn's already on the 40.

Casas to the 60. 39.
Joely DFA'd. 38.
Cooper activated. 39.
Reyes DFA'd. 38.
Horn signed. 39.
Gutierrez DFA'd. 38.
Smith signed. 39.
Short activated. 40

I thought they needed to clear two spaces for Horn/Smith/Short, since they were at 39 as of Monday? At least I thought that was what folks in the other thread said.

They'd been at 38 last week. There was some confusion cause MLB listed Gutierrez on the 40 man twice.

Horn will probably need a little while to get the White Sox stink off of him, and then we can see what he can do.
