I still assume Isaac Coffey will pitch for Portland.

Gambrell makes his first start for Worcester.

PERALES looking to bounce back from a rocky start.

& not really sure what's going on with Salem & why they're pitching batters in the 11th inning when we just drafted a whole bunch of pitchers who have now pitched either 1 or 0 innings for our FCL team whose season is over.

Ok, I'm going to sort out this Salem nonsense. Notwithstanding the fact that they could have gotten pitching reinforcements...

Today, Nunez, Ramsey, Butler & Talavera has all pitched, & Talavera had already gone 3.2, so I understand wanting to take him out.

Yesterday, Monegro (5), Ruiz (2) & Brand (2) all pitched so I can understand not wanting to put any of them out there for the 11th.

On Wednesday, Elvis (3.2 innings/63 pitches), De La Rosa (2.1/43), Felix (1.1/36), & Perez (1.2, 37) pitched. I guess I could see wanting to be cautious with young arms, but seems like a couple of those guys could have been available.

On Tuesday, Ramirez (3.1/84), Talavera (1.2/39), Butler (1/36) & Valera (3/27). Talavera & Butler did pitch. Seems like Valera should have been available after 27 pitches 4 nights ago.

Monday is an off day.

On Sunday, Paez started with some of those other guys.

On Saturday some of those other guys + Noah Dean pitched.

So what does this tell me? Idk...

My best guess for tomorrow is that they use Michael Valera to open for Noah Dean, & De La Rosa (who opened for Dean last Saturday), Felix & Perez should be available as needed.

& then on Sunday, Paez, whichever of those guys don't pitch Saturday, & Ruiz/Brand should be available.

But really... why do they hate letting new draftees pitch? I guess it's all development that 1st year.

Innings pitched for '22 draftees in '22:

Landry 2.2
Rogers 2
Brand 2
Godman 2
Coffey 1.2
Bolden 1.1
Dean 0
Hoppe 0
Johnson 0
Mullins 0
Ramsey 0
Ehrlicher 0
Butler 0

This year I don't think any new guy has pitched more than 1.

But there are other FCL pitchers who have been pitching this season that could help.

Guys like Luis Cohen, Francis Hernandez, Stijn Van Der Schaaf & Willian Colmenares seem like obvious choices to get more run.

You could either move on from guys like Jhonny Felix, or promote guys like Raelin Perez & Jonathan Brand.

& to create room in Greenville you could move on from guys like Nate Tellier & Joey Stock, or promote guys like Zach Penrod & Brock Bell.

& to create room in Portland you could move on from guys like Sterling Sharp & Ryan Miller, or promote guys like Luis Guerrero & Hunter Dobbins.

& to create room at Pawtucket you could move on from guys like Chase Shugart & promote someone to the Red Sox when rosters expand.

After an extensive perusal of PERALES's stats, I've determined that if he starts throwing more strikes his results will dramatically improve.

In his last 7 games for Salem, De La Rosa, who turned 21 this season, has pitched 14.2 innings & allowed 2 earned runs (1.23 ERA) on 7 hits & 9 walks, striking out 27.

Not sure the best way to post this as it's in 1 Twitter thread & unwieldy. I guess I'll just c&p + link.

Ed Hand did a list of DSL guys.

View: https://twitter.com/EdHand89/status/1695468619679818216

With the 2023 Dominican Summer League season now in the books, here are seven Red Sox players to keep an eye on for 2024. Keep in mind that scouting reports and video on these players is very difficult to find state-side, and the DSL as a league is kind of like a more intense Legion so doing well there is no guarantee they will transition successfully to the state-side leagues. Nonetheless, here are the players that stood out to me through a mixture of statistics and what scarce scouting reports have come out.
1. Gerardo Rodriguez Position- Catcher Age- 17 Signing Bonus: $50,000 The young catcher found his way into regular playing time and rewarded the Red Sox Red by slashing .346/.390/.488 with nine doubles, three home runs, and 25 RBI. The numbers indicate some power potential.
2. Andruw Musett Position- Catcher
Age- 17
Signing bonus- $90,000

Musett ended the season injured but showed impressive plate discipline slashing .289/.433/.414 with 30 walks to 23 strikeouts. He also hit five doubles and three home runs over his 44 games with the Red Sox Red.
3. Yoeilin Cespedes
Position- Infielder
Age- 17
Signing Bonus- $1,400,000
@SoxProspects
ranking- #15

One of the few players to have an actual scouting report, SoxProspects describes Cespedes as having "quick wrists, compact swing, solid-average raw power with the potential for more as he fills out." and a "good approach for his age."

The numbers reflect this as his slashed an impressive .346/.392/.560 with 15 doubles, three triples, six home runs, and 38 RBI over 209 PA. He was a 2023 Dominican Summer League All-Star.
4. Starlyn Nunez
Position- Infielder
Age- 17
Signing Bonus- $52,500

The scouting report that
@SoxProspects
has on Nunez at the moment isn't long; "Projectable frame. Position to be determined. Above-average speed."

Indeed, the Dominican teenager played 20 games at second base and 25 at third while slashing .325/.391/.479 with 12 doubles, three triples, four home runs, and 34 RBI while stealing seven bases. Cespedes rightfully garners the most attention, but his DSL Blue teammate should be on your radar as well.

Also, that is one stylish turtleneck/jacket combo.
5. Franklin Arias
Position- Infielder
Age- 17
Signing Bonus- $525,000
@SoxProspects
ranking- #45

Another one with a scouting report! Arias is already considered a good defender with the potential to become an excellent one. He's described as "surehanded" and has a "solid approach for his age", but "needs to add power, showing more doubles power to all-fields than over-the-fence power at this point." They then add that he has the "potential for five average-to-better tools" and a "high baseball IQ".

Over 37 games with the Red Sox Red, the Venezuelan teenager slashed .350/.440/.453 with nine doubles, one triple, one home run, and 15 RBI. He had a strong BB/K ratio of 19-14.
6. Jesus Garcia
Position- Right-Handed pitcher
Age- 17
Signing bonus- $130,000

@SoxProspects
scouting report on him is short but notes that he was "said to be the top pitching prospect in the Red Sox 2023 international signing class" and that his "fastball hit low 90s as an amateur at age 16" to go with a "solid slider".

The Venezuelan righty posted a 3.30 ERA over 43.2 innings with 36 strikeouts to 15 walks with a 1.28 WHIP in his debut pro season.
7. Obed Balderas
Position- Right-handed pitcher
Age- 17
Signing bonus- $20,000

The Mexican teenager was actually only 16 when the season started (he has a July birthday) but that didn't stop him from posting solid numbers for the DSL Red Sox Blue squad- 2.54 ERA, 39 IP, 1.38 WHIP, 25 K/10 BB. Gave up a decent number of hits (44) but minimized the damage with just 1 homer. Age may make him a candidate to repeat the league but intriguing all the same.

Listening to the SoxProspects podcast. I enjoy the Red Sox org talk, but things like not knowing which round Campbell got drafted in & thinking Enmanuel Valdez was a righty for a bit stress me out.

It also annoys me on SoxProspects podcast that Hatfield is trying to tell us who the good DSL pitchers are by literally looking at their stats like he's never seen them before. Good shout out for Ali Ascanio, though...

I just moved De La Rosa up a lot...& then was told by SoxProspects that he's basically organizational filler lol.

The truth is probably somewhere in between, but the fact that he's averaging almost 2 k's per inning over his last several outings gives me some faith in his stuff that they lack.

CF Jhostynxon (#65)
3B Johnfrank (#47)
DH James (#120)
C Johanfran (#11)
SS Ravelo (#51)
RF Yuten (#35)
2B Alcantara (#49)
1B Yorberto (#125)
LF Simon (#202)

SP Jhonny Felix (#247)

My best guess for tomorrow is that they use Michael Valera to open for Noah Dean, & De La Rosa (who opened for Dean last Saturday), Felix & Perez should be available as needed.
I guess Felix as the opener makes sense as you don't really want him pitching lots of innings.

Felix allowed a lead-off single & Johnathon Thomas's 52nd steal, but no runs in the 1st.

Grant Gambrell makes quick work of his 1st inning in AAA. Strikeout, fly out, strikeout.
