All 7 teams are playing, plus a doubleheader in the FCL.

10 a.m. - FCL - Red Sox @ Twins

After - FCL - Red Sox @ Twins

11 a.m. - DSL - Red Sox Blue @ Dodgers Mega

11 a.m. - DSL - Pirates Black @ Red Sox Red

6:45 p.m. - AAA - Scranton/WB @ Worcester (BEAR CLAW)

7 p.m. - A+ - Greenville @ Winston-Salem

MiLB page claims Bastardo is starting but he's on the Development List, so probably not? Maybe it will be the Penrod debut.

7:05 p.m. - AA Portland @ Binghamton

7:05 p.m. - A - Salem (C. Nunez) @ Delmarva

The FCL Sox are finally running out all their new pitchers!
We'll see about my rankings on all these guys who haven't pitched in the pros before...

Hayden Mullins (#207), the 2022 12th rounder, $97,500 signing bonus, started & pitched 1 inning, allowing a run on a walk & 2 wild pitches. He pitched a total of 53.1 innings in his 3 years of college at Auburn, & this is his first time pitching since being drafted, so not too surprising there was a bit of wildness. Mullins turns 23 in September & is a 6'0 lefty.

Here's part of the SoxProspects scouting report:

Mechanics: Throws from a three-quarters arm slot. Starts on the third base side of the rubber. Extremely high leg kick which he tucks in behind his glove arm before he comes forward. Long arm action. Significant effort in delivery.

Fastball: 90-94 mph. High spin rate. Command and control are a work in progress.

Slider: 80-84 mph. High spin rate. Sweepy shape. Had a very high whiff rate in college.

Changeup: Mid-80s. Third pitch.
Summation: Potential relief arm with an intriguing two-pitch mix. Somewhat of a gamble due to his significant injury history, including a Tommy John surgery he was still rehabbing when he signed, but was a highly regarded high schooler and was able to succeed in the SEC.

2nd inning:

Blake Wehunt (#149), the 2023 9th rounder, $100k signing bonus, pitched a scoreless 2nd, allowing 1 hit & striking out 1. Wehunt pitched for Kennesaw State this season & threw 76.1 innings with a 4.83 ERA, 1.46 WHIP & 9.4 k.9. Wehunt turns 23 in November & is a 6'7 righty.

From SoxProspects:

Mechanics: Throws from a three-quarters arm slot. Starts on the extreme first base side of the rubber. Substantial effort in his delivery including a long arm swing forward and falling off hard to the first base side.

Fastball: 90-91 mph. Sinking fastball. Solid command and control. Generates a lot of weak contact on the ground with the pitch.

Changeup: Low-80s. Throws with deceptive arm speed and shows lade drop and fade.
Summation: Intriguing frame and sinker/changeup combo. Stuff is fringy, but throws strikes and generates a lot of weak contact. Could be someone who is able to provide solid innings in the low minors and potentially beyond, especially if his stuff takes a step forward.

I wonder if they have plans for a 3rd pitch?

I just realized I didn't refresh a tab on this computer since I removed 1 of the 2 CJ Weins...so all my rankings I've been quoting after 129 were probably off by 1. Oh well. You get the general idea. Will edit Wehunt from 150 to 149, though, cuz I'm still within my free editing window :)

CJ Weins (#144), the 2023 6th rounder, $50k signing bonus, pitched the 3rd inning without allowing a run, 1 walk, 1 strikeout. Weins was a relief pitcher for Western Kentucky this season. In 31 innings he had a 4.35 ERA, 0.84 WHIP & 12.2 k/9. Weins turned 23 the other day & is a 6'3 righty.

From SoxProspects:

Mechanics: Throws from a low three-quarters arm slot. Drop-and-drive delivery with considerable effort.

Fastball: Low-to-mid-90s fastball that plays up in the zone. Pitch has shown bat-missing ability. Solid command and control.

Slider: Shorter, horizontal slider/cutter hybrid pitch.

Curveball: Long, vertical breaking ball that will flash depth.
Summation: Pure relief prospect with intriguing pitch characteristics. Stuff grades out well on models. Has shown strike-throwing and bat-missing ability in college. Gets the most out of his stuff and could move quickly in a pure relief role.

All 3 of these guys seem to have a lot in common in terms of high effort 3/4 deliveries.

Side note - I didn't really put much thought into my rankings of the random rookies. I mostly just slotted them in based on where they were drafted, which is kind of silly considering the fact that teams don't draft people in the order that they value them based on slots & things like that. Those rankings should get sharper by next update, especially if the guys keep pitching.

Cade Feeney (#155), the 13th rounder, $150k signing bonus, pitched a scoreless 4th inning, allowing 2 hits & striking out 1. Feeney started for North Dakota State this year & pitched 80.1 innings with a 4.57 ERA, 1.29 WHIP & 8.7 k/9. Feeney turns 23 next May & is a 6'0 righty.

From SoxProspects:

Mechanics: Throws from a low three-quarters arm slot starting on the first base side of the rubber. High leg kick. Easy delivery. Short arm action behind and gets some front-side deception.

Fastball: 88-93 mph. Solid command-and-control profile. Pitch shows sink. Not overpowering, but stays out of the middle of the zone.

Secondaries: Also throws a slider and a changeup. Mixes his pitches well.
Summation: Pitchability right-hander with fringy stuff, but solid feel. Knows how to pitch. Throws strikes and mixes his pitches well to keep hitters off balance.

I'm a bit skeptical that his stuff will play, but he does have very good control, only walking 12 last season.

The 5th inning went to Royman Blanco (#177) who was promoted to A, & then demoted back to the FCL. He allowed 2 hits in a scoreless inning.

FCL Sox are losing 1-0 headed to the bottom of the 6th in a 7 inning game.

Stanley Tucker is 1-2 with a walk. The rest of the team is 0-17 with 2 walks.

Zanetello, Anderson & Campbell are a combined 0-9 with 3 strikeouts.

YOELY (#7) is back in the lineup for DSL Blue, but is DH'ing. Between all the sitting out & DH'ing, feels like he has to be dealing with some sort of nagging issue.

Jose Martinez (#108) is starting & has 1 walk & 3 strikeouts through 3 scoreless innings.

Daniel Nunez (#181) started for DSL Red. I might have to bump him up a bit if he keeps pitching this well, but he's already 20. He's thrown 2 scoreless innings with 1 walk & 3 strikeouts (2.01 ERA).

Blanco pitched a 1-2-3 6th, & the FCL Sox lost 1-0, & only got that 1 hit from Tucker.

On to game 2 where hopefully they will pitch more new draftees. & hit better.

Starlyn Nunez has been in a slump lately & was replaced after 1 AB in today's game for DSL Blue.

Where else are you going to find this granularity of DSL coverage? lol

Including today, in his last 11 games Starlyn is 6 for his last 38 with 1 double, 1 triple & 4 walks.

During that timeframe he is slashing .158/.238/.237 for a .475 OPS.

Prior to that he was slashing .367/.429/.531 for a .960 OPS.

Spoke too soon. He allowed 3 runs in the 3rd & DSL Red is losing 3-2.

Both DSL games in rain delays.

Franklin Arias & Andruw Musett, my 2 favorite DSL Red position players, are both 1-1 with a walk & a run.

Musett apparently hit a single with a 3-base error to score both of them.

This game was postponed, DSL Blue was suspended, & I'm pretty sure DSL Red will be soon.

Here's a little Roman fantasy baseball writeup.

Roman Anthony- Anthony is another guy who I didn’t expect to rank this high. 30% k rates at any level usually have me running for the hills, but there’s more nuance here. Anthony runs astronomically high walk rates, and he’s almost too passive, working himself into pitchers counts. I don’t really mind this, and it’s a bit similar to Emmanuel Rodriguez’s strikeout woes. Anthony has a swinging strike rate for the season under 9%, in the same territory as Jackson Holliday. The real worry here is trouble against lefties, but the power to all fields and surprisingly good feel for contact gives Anthony one of the highest ceilings in the minors.

Nelly Taylor feature.

When fans show up at the ballpark, Taylor should be a player that stands out, as when asked how to describe his game, the talented outfielder did not disappoint.

“ Pure entertainment,” said Taylor. “ You come to the field, and you may see me have a really good day, and of course, that’s a bonus, but it’s the days where I don’t do as well Where I can continue to be myself and understand that the game is about how levelheaded you can in moments where you’re facing adversity. As a leader, I had to learn to pick myself and my teammates up, even when I’m not having a great game.”

Quite an eventful 1st inning for Zach Penrod in his debut.

2 hits, 2 walks, 0 runs. Thx TEEL.
