I'm wondering why we seem to taking it slow with Owens. Results-wise, he seems to be too good for AA, so I'm wondering if the coaching staff are waiting for him to show some more development in other aspects such as execution or command before sending him up.

isn't there an issue with rotation spots for now?

There is no way they'd let that be a factor if they were ready to promote Owens.
I agree in principle.  but if they expect a spot to open up soon (presumable once Workman is promoted), maybe they're waiting for that.  Just trying to sort it out as I am otherwise not sure why he wouldn't be up in Pawtucket now

Maybe he's working on a pitch. Some late movement on the FB or tightening the curve.
It makes sense to let him explore in AA where he
won't get killed as the pitch fails.

While this is a generally true statement, this may be the exception to the rule in this regard. Workman, Ranaudo, Webster, and Barnes are all guys who have the potential to be MLB starters. Wright is pitching exceptionally well this year and, as a knuckleballer, is a potential late bloomer. Chris Hernandez could get bumped, but that still doesn't really create room for Owens. Owens isn't going to pitch in MLB this season, so there is little harm in keeping him in AA for the remainder of the season and then giving him a job in AAA next year.

I thought he said he's working on the curve and throwing more; isn't that why he made a big deal about his first Futures game pitch, which was a curve?

WMB with a dinger tonight. He looks rehabbed. I think there's a decent chance he'll be promoted soon to play 3rd with X back to short, especially if Drew continues to struggle

Drew isn't struggling right now. He has an 800+ OPS in July.

Middlebrooks may be rehabbed but does he deserve a major league everyday lineup slot based on his healthy performance?

It really does seem like refining his curve would be key for Owens given recent scouting reports of meh velocity. But, I thought there was an Article a couple years back where the Red Sox and some other experts had decided that it was very difficult to "teach" the ability to spin the ball? So that may be easier said than done. Maybe he can learn a split instead at some point; probably don't want him messing with that yet though.

Not a great return from the DL for Simon Mercedes. Two singles, a 3-run HR (by old friend Oscar Tejeda), and two more hits before getting out of the 1st as Salem loses 6-1.

Swihart's HR was a bomb and he had easy power meaning you could not tell on the swing alone, it looked like a hard single or more likely a double off the easy short compact swing. I've been to over 30 games there and no-one had hit it over the Sam Adams Pavilion until the other night.
Owens as has been described has a great change up with good arm speed and several hitters swung way ahead of his swing and miss plus change-up pitch. He also threw several curveballs that were swing and miss pitches often after swinging badly at a change-up. I finally got to see and him and came away fairly impressed.
