My 6 unexpectedly died last week and because I'm impulsive I bought the 6p instead of waiting for the new one to come from Motorola (it arrives tomorrow). While I was/am a huge fan of the 6 for the 14-15 months I had it; the 6p is absolutely fantastic.

Can't go wrong with $250/$300 on the 6, though...which was a deal on Amazon again yesterday/today.

This is good to hear; I'm jumping T-Mobile's ship and about to go Google Fi (that thread and Monbo's championing of the service is very helpful). The prices weren't this low while I've been looking but managed to get a like new 6 with 64GB via Ebay that also includes Motocare through April 2017 for $270 bucks last week. [The owner upgraded after one month from 6 to 6P].

I just switched from T-Mo to Fi and from the LG G3 to the 6P and on both fronts it's been a stunning improvement. The T-Mo service in Denver is fairly meh and so is Sprint but together and combined with the much better device has made all the difference. I have very, very few spots where I don't get excellent LTE coverage. The transition process was as seamless as could be as well though I was coming from using Google Voice as my phone service for years. I just ordered my wife the 5x and am switching her to Fi as soon as the phone gets here. If you have any interest in a slightly lower, but still nicely, spec'd phone they just dropped the price on the 5x to $350.

So my Verizon phone is finally due for an upgrade. I've got a Galaxy S5. The last iPhone I had was the 4.

What's my best bet here? Stick with Samsung and get the Note 5 or S6, or ditch and go crawling back to Apple and grab a 6s plus?

What say you tech geniuses?

Has there been a real clear cut winner yet between Apple and Samsung?

I like Samsung's Google play a lot. That being said, my Galaxy S5 gets shit reception where I live, while everyone else I know who has iPhone 6's appear to have no issues.

Is there an iPhone 7 coming soon? I'm sick of my S5 and have come close to smashing it against a wall a few times over the last few months. I think that's what has me wanting to go back to Apple, but most reviews I've read have the Note 5 or Galaxy S6 as the better phones ...

There is no clear winner. It all comes down to personal preference. I will never buy another iPhone because I much prefer Android. Tons of people feel the opposite way. The iPhone 7 will most likely launch in September.

Forget that then, I'm not waiting until September. What makes you prefer Android so much over iPhone? I do think Google play is a million times better than iTunes

I don't like how Apple locks everything down and errs on the side of proprietary. I don't like how apple holds back tech until they decide the customer is ready for it. Up until gen 6, I hated that the iPhones were so small.

The S7 has been leaked in a few places and should be out soon.

If you're willing to look at a big phone (you mentioned the Note) the Nexus 6p is quite nice.

I'm weird and either Samsung or HTC would need to make something pretty next-level for me to consider them again. Big fan of my Sony though it's nearing the 2 year point where it will likely start degrading.

Thanks, but I'm pretty much either going with Samsung or Apple. The S7 seems to be getting good reviews, and if they do have the ability to add an SD card, I'm not sure what benefit there would be to buying an iPhone?

So now that it's officially announced, anyone have any opinions of the S7, especially with how it compares to the iPhone 6s?

It looks pretty incremental, and we're obviously still learning about thim, but so far it looks like this'd be the first time in a couple of generations that I wouldn't give the LG flagship a clear nod over the Samsung. I think I'd still take the G5, but it's pretty close this time around (but neither of them has announced Project Fi support yet, so that's a theoretical conversation anyway).

The LG G5 looks like it's got a bit bigger screen, a bit better cameras, and much better expandibility than the S7 with the magic slot; that could be absolutely killer, or completely worthless depending on what accessories come out for it. And LG's always had better ergonomic design, though they've shifted the volume buttons this time so that'll have to be played with to evaluate.

The S7's got the Super AMOLED display and is waterproof, which is pretty nice. The S7 looks to have the same clunky fingerprint sensor as the S6, so the G5 might get an edge there if theirs is more like the Nexus-style one. The S7 looks to have upgraded their battery to be competitive with the LGs this generation, which is huge.

But, yeah, until others add Fi support (which is absolutely must-have after using it for a few months), it's basically a choice between the Nexus 5x and 6p.

I don't think Fi will ever be available on any phones that aren't Nexus branded.
Google has said they're working with other vendors to add support once the early-access beta phase is done.

So, I'm dumb ... What's Fi support?
Project Fi is Google's cell service--it replaces your cell carrier. Currently it uses Sprint and T-Mobile both on the back-end (they're adding other regional networks as well), plus seamless calling over any wifi hotspot you can connect to (calls will transition from wifi to sprint to tmobile transparently). It's got a bunch of neat google features as well. And it's cheap as hell; my total bill, with taxes, hovers around $25/month.

Anyone know if iPhone has any better antennas or better actual cell service compared to other phones? I live in a very rural area and it seems like folks with iphones don't have service issues.

Rural areas where you have poor coverage at home are one of the good places for Fi; if you have Internet at home, you have perfect calling over wifi.

How about away from home, just driving in the "neighborhood"?
Nope, once you're out of wifi range you're on whatever the best of Sprint/T-Mobile is in that area. They're surprisingly decent in combination given how spotty they are individually, but in many areas AT&T and Verizon are still king.

Have you had the problem with SMS shortcodes not working? I've been too lazy to contact Fi support about it, but apparently it's awfully common and takes fixing account by account.

I get a fair number of these from 2 factor Auth type stuff and no, haven't had any issues at all with this on Fi (I was previously on Google voice and had a ton of issues with it there).

Yeah I haven't been able to get 2 factor codes from, say, Twitter since I changed to Fi. Or when I signed up to check out the lunch service Peach, but never ever used it because they use shortcodes to broadcast their daily menu which I never received (so I promptly forgot about them).

This happened to a friend of mine too. Give them a call and they should be able to take care of it.

I've got a 5X (that I got for free), which replaced an S5, but after 2 months of using it or so I'm ready to give it up. The thing lags all the time, and has very poor reception on Verizon.

I don't love the mega phones, so I'm now trying to decide, between the S7 and LG 5. Both seem like a little bit of a compromise though.

I'm a bit puzzled by LG's strategy around the G5. I get that they need to do something to improve their market share, but I'm not sure this is it. I can't imagine a whole lot of people will be purchasing the attachments especially when the pricing is announced. LG runs the risk of having a not insignificant number of potential customers say "I don't need any of those add on pieces, so I guess I don't need the G5." I'm a G3 owner and will give the G5 a close look, but some may overlook a great phone because they don't think they need a modular phone.

Yeah. I can't imagine caring enough to buy camera attachments, or any of the other attachments they'll have.

I guess I'll be going with the S7. The expandable storage is enough for me to overlook the iPhone 6s plus and its possible (probable?) better OS.

So what's now considered the best way to buy phones now that almost all the major carriers have eliminated 2 year contracts?

FWIW, I'm on Verizon. Looking at either the S7, S7 Edge or G5 most likely. My two year contract just ended are there any more incentives replacing the $450+ subsidizing that used to occur?

Eh, you're either looking at a 2 year 'device payment' -(which is just another contract, although most carriers allow you to upgrade before the contract end point as long as you trade in your phone in good shape)- or just buying a phone outright.

Depending on how you look at things, there are pros and cons to both. Most device payment plans also include some sort of insurance coverage, while you've got the satisfaction of knowing you aren't still beholden to a wireless company contract if you buy outright.

Recently reviewed a Nextbit Robin for work. It's got a fair share of flaws (not least of which is a pretty lousy battery) but pretty much everyone in our office was surprised at how well it runs and how its sporty, colorful design turned out to be pretty neat. I can also see the cloud storage element being seriously useful going forward.

I'd recommend it for people who are OK with getting something below flagship status. Honestly, it's just cool as shit to see someone approaching smartphone manufacturing with a forward-thinking concept.

I pre-ordered the S7 Edge. I figured it was worth a shot, and I will have 14 days if it blows to just grab an iphone 6s plus instead. Plus I get the free VR, or S2. I hope it does not suck, because I love that the expandable storage is back.

I got the G3 and returned it as the really great screen destroyed the battery with any usage, and this allows battery changing I believe. Having the modern encased phone but able to change the battery, that alone is interesting. But realistically I'd rather just not need to.
The expansion thing aside it looks a lot like the Nexus 6p to me.

I'm getting notifications now that an update is ready but I keep postponing it (three separate updates actually). I'm assuming it's marshmallow but haven't been able to confirm. I've read that some people had some pretty bad glitches after updating. Does anyone have any experience? If it matters I'm on Sprint with an HTC M8.

Nexus 5x. I mostly love it, but I'm not particularly demanding of my phone. The fingerprint reader is great, best I've seen since the old Motorola Atrix (maybe better).

The battery life isn't near my old phone's. But it seems like nothing is, that was an LG G2, and the LG G3 didn't have near the longevity of the G2.

I'm on Fi (Nexus 6P) and haven't had any issues with SMS. Fwiw.

My experience on Fi has been great. Over the past 5-7 or so years I've gone from Verizon, to T-Mobile, to Straight Talk, then to Fi. Fi has been the overall best, by far. Great customer service, reception has been fine, and you can't beat the price. The app is super easy to use, which is really great coming from the supremely shitty websites and apps of T-Mobile and Straight Talk. Changing my plan on the Fi app took like three taps of my finger and less than 30 seconds. With both Straight Talk and T-Mobile the UX w/r/t anything involving my account always seemed needlessly laborious and convoluted. And that was when their websites and apps were actually working. Which wasn't always.

Ok thanks, guys. Yea, I gotta make the change. Internet & Health Insurance all went up this year so If i could cut my phone bill in half that would be amazing. I haven't paid $30 a month on a phone bill since I had a prepaid Sidekick and even then it was 50 a pop.

Adding to the echo chamber.. I've been on Fi since Dec, coming from T-mo. It's the best and cheapest service I've had for a long, long time. No issues with the phone(6P) or the service. It's been great in every sense really.

Question for the Fi users: how much mobile data do you guys us on average? The plan sounds great for users who only use mobile data during their commute and are otherwise hooked up to Wi-Fi, but not so great for someone who actually uses a decent amount of mobile data.

It's changed my habits a lot. Because T-Mobile LTE is really fast, and I was never noticibly throttled on my unlimited data I never used go on wifi, and would generally sit between 10-12 GB per month.

I'm not *great* about remembering to enable WiFi now (I know I should leave it on all the time, but I have issues if I leave it on when I'm commuting or walking around, so I often forget to enable it when I reach my destination) but I'm down to around 6 GB a month. So at worst I'm paying the same as I used to, for better service. Generally I end up a bit cheaper.

I usually use around 300-400MB/month, same as when I had unlimited data, but it's so cheap that if you're not streaming big media or something then it's not worth limiting yourself artificially from normal use. The first month I burned through 700-800MB (mostly downloading apps, and I downloaded some music/podcasts on the first day before I'd sync'd stuff) and the bill still came out to around $30.

What kind of issues do you have leaving it on? I always leave it on with no problems.

Connectivity. It'll try and jump onto a wifi network and hold it longer than it should and I might get a long/failed page load. When you're feverishly clicking through SOSH and you're a very impatient person it bugs you.

Turn off the "automatically connect to unknown networks" option and you should avoid that, unless you're driving in circles around your home/work or something--it'll still autoconnect to approved networks but nothing else.
