The upside of carrying two guys you don't want to ever play among your 13 position players is that there's no such thing as a weaker lineup, just alternating catchers and Grisham (who I do really like) on the bench along with those two (named Jones and Smith, in case they weren't forgettable enough already).

1 SS Anthony Volpe
2 RF Juan Soto
3 CF Aaron Judge
4 DH Giancarlo Stanton
5 1B Anthony Rizzo
6 2B Gleyber Torres
7 LF Alex Verdugo
8 C Jose Trevino
9 3B Oswaldo Cabrera

I'm starting to worry a little less about the daytime offense. Daytime defense may be an issue, but it looks like the guys are having good at bats.

I was just about to post how Nestor's location was looking really good and that he was putting the ball right where Trevino wants it. And then two pitches in a row to Ramirez where he missed by a lot, the second of which ended up in the seats.

Not great.

Flaherty seems like an odd dude. When he calling yesterday's game he had an awkward sidebar with Jeff Nelson about the trivia question where he put Nelson on the spot about looking up the answer on the computer. It was all joking around, but it came off as a little strange to me. Like he was worried that Nelson would get undeserved credit for being smart or something.

And today, as they recognized Brad Ausmus' birthday and showed him in the dugout looking pretty fit for an older guy, Nelson makes a joke about Flaherty's comparative fitness, and maybe JF got offended? He made a point of mentioning that he lifts heavier than Ausmus in the weight room.

I'm sure they're both just having fun and I'm reading into things too much because I'm bored, but I get the impression that Flaherty has a bit of an ego and could be kind of an asshole.

Nestor ran out of gas pretty quickly over the last inning. I guess I'm not surprised after he had a long outing his previous start and it is still early in the season.

Look, there's gotta be obstacles for Cabrera to overcome on his hero's journey. Hopefully Verdugo or Trevino can get on base before he comes up third.

I guess I looked away and missed that. Did he really dog it down the line?
He sort of hesitated at first, then stopped when the throw came home as if he had to avoid the ball, but it looked like he could've just kept going. Don't think they get him if he's running the whole time.

Yeah, I saw a replay. You're right. Dogging it probably isn't the right description, but Verdugo's situational awareness or baseball IQ or whatever you want to call doesn't seem especially high.

Oh well, that's gonna be a shitty loss. If they can stop playing terrible defense this team could be really good.

This soon-to-be loss is definitely due to poor defense all damn day. A lot of poor execution even beyond obvious errors.

I didn't actually agree about the defense through yesterday (we have to expect this from Gleyber by now) but dreadful throughout today, so many extra outs handed them.

But Volpe is a beast, jesus. No one else could make much contact off Clase but Volpe hit a tracer bullet 350 feet, on base four times again today. LeMahieu is welcome back for a three man rotation at 3B/2B with Cabrera and Gleyber, but Volpe is the leadoff guy now.

Holmes two days in a row means no Holmes tomorrow but Hamilton should be available.
