On paper, that's really not a very good roster.

Good thing they don't play the fucking games on paper.

(They play them on grass -- or surfaces made to mimic grass. And dirt. There's no paper involved. That's the point. I'm sorry this got out of control. I can explain the joke better if someone wants me to. The point is that paper does not play baseball. Well, not typically. Paper can't do the things that humans can. For example, paper cannot catch a fastball. There are lots of reasons for this. One is that paper cannot hold a mitt. It does not have hands. Also, paper does not have a brain. A brain is necessary for most baseball skills. If you were to regard passively being in the way of a batted ball as a "baseball skill," it would not require a brain. Like, paper could be in the way of a ball, on accident. So, anyway, the roster is on paper and paper can't play baseball so the thing I'm trying to say is that just looking at the paper doesn't give you all the information you need about how the team is going to do. I think that's one of the points anyway. Because people play baseball, not paper. We're still going to suck, but, you know, that's the point.)

For a myriad of reasons I haven't followed the team closely in four years.

The only player I know is Devers.

What player(s) should I root for and follow?

I don't really have the ability to watch, or even listen, but highlights and box scores still exist.

Mookie.

I kid. I kid. (Sort of.)

There are a lot of fresh faces, and so the easiest thing to do might be to just watch a few games and see who catches your interest. That's kind of what I'm going to do. Heathy Story is a player I'm interested in. Yoshida is very likeable and showed potential to be Boggsian at times, but then he collapsed, and so I'm interested to see whether he'll re-emerge or whether what we saw last year is what we get. Casas is probably the guy who has the chance to be the most spectacular and he's fun to watch.

Casas, Story, Yoshida, Bello, and soon Grissom.

And everyone else

Thanks. I was trying not to open the Mookie can of worms because that's not the sole reason that I've lost touch with the team.

Edit: and if it was, I wouldn't have a reason to post. I'm trying to re-engage a level of fandom for the team. Hell, we're the team that traded away Ruth and, my favorite player, Nomar. This ain't new for ' em.

Not thrilled about how the pitching staff looks but the lineup could be pretty solid. If Masa can be his first half self on a more consistent basis throughout the year that would be a major boost.

In March of 1967 I had an Economics Professor who pissed away 15 minutes of class time explaining to us why the Sox were going to suck this year, sucked the previous year and would probably will suck for the foreseeable eternity.

He wasn't that good at teaching Economic theory either.

I like our chances.

Ceddanne Rafaela. Same kind of balls to the wall playing type, and a future Gold Glove centerfielder, though admittedly a large step down from He Who Shall Not Be Named on offense (but still a lot of fun, and also... who isn't?). You will love him.

Series 1: SOX vs SEATTLE

After mad mundane months, it is time to play ball.
I type on my keyboard, and I stare at my wall.
As I try to choose which cap to don and to doff,
I’ll recap the off season (which truly felt off.)

In October, we brought in Craig Breslow as “chief.”
(Our pitching is still thin. Can he toss in relief?)
Tom Werner proclaimed we’d be going "full throttle."
T’was poor rhetoric. (He is no Aristotle.)

The Sox did not thrust. It was more of an amble.
Urias was swapped for a pitcher named Campbell.
Then Verdugo who constantly heard Cora’s gripes
was sent packing for pitching. (He now wears pinstripes.)

With this surplus of arms, the Red Sox made a deal,
trading two to St. Louis for Tyler O’Neill
who brings a big bat and who could really be fun
(if we get him to hit like it’s still ’21.)

We got Brave in December and Poof! Chris was gone:
Sent to Atlanta for an infielder named Vaughn.
He got hurt right away. Not Sale. Sadly, Grissom.
He hasn’t played yet. We don’t know if we miss him.

We needed a starter. We signed Giolito:
A good move on paper that no one would veto.
The signing looked promising, but there was a hitch:
a tear in a ligament means Lucas can’t pitch.

We waited for more moves, but that was about all.
We let go of Turner, bid farewell to Duvall.
The rest was silence all the way through Spring Training
(except for the clamoring and the complaining.)

“We should sign Snell!” “Go all in on Montgomery!”
To say it was hell would be a good summary.
The Red Sox stayed pat till both those options were gone.
But we were not done yet! We released CJ Cron.

Now, thank God, at long last, it is opening day.
We’ll find out if these (non) moves prove wise as we play.
Will it be a nightmare or impossible dream?
Either way we are here and we’ll cheer for our team.

We’ll embrace the pitchers who fight for the banner.
We’ve got Brayan, Kutter, Nick, Garrett, and Tanner
The pressure on these guys is sure to be hefty.
They’ll be all right (because we don’t have a lefty.)

As relievers go, I’m not sure who’s a poser.
(In fact, I’ll admit, I’m not sure who’s our closer.)
I think it’s still Jansen, (Though he could be partin’)
We could use Winckowski or we could use Martin.
Anderson, Weissert, Slaten, Rodriguez, Campbell
might all prove to be great. (It’s always a gamble.)

As far as the offense: we’ll excite the masses.
There’s Duran and Devers and Story and Casas.
There’s O’Neill and Yoshida, Valdez and Abreu.
Catchers Wong and McGuire can both pitch in, too.
Rafaela and Reyes will fight for their spot,
And who knows, maybe Dalbec will somehow get hot.

As Refsnyder and Grissom await in the wings,
I’m excited to see what this new season brings.
Believe in the boys as they begin their battle.
Stay up and be sleepless. Let’s go sweep Seattle!
Fantastic!

It is my hope that significantly improved defense will help the pitching. (And that Masa not playing as much defense will help Masa).

I don't really have the ability to watch, or even listen, but highlights and box scores still exist.
These would be my choices:

Trevor Story – the one-time All Star and two-way shortstop has been plagued by injuries in recent seasons, following a big FA contract. This season is something of a redemption tour, and Story has both the talent and the surgically-repaired elbow to make it happen.

Ceddanne Rafaela – Glove-first CF/SS rookie forced his way onto the roster ahead of schedule by toning down the aggressiveness this spring. Can he keep that up and do enough with the bat to get the playing time to reach his Gold Glove ceiling?

Garrett Whitlock – Rule 5 heist from the Yankees has pitched well in relief but retains tantalizing rotation upside. Can he stay healthy enough to fulfill that potential?

Triston Casas – Second-year 1B had a great second half that made him one of the ROY runner ups. He'll be looking to consolidate a spot in the middle of the order. Plus-plus power, great approach, iffy infield play, quirky personality.

Greg Weissert – Relief pitcher acquired in trade has insane movement on his pitches. If he can harness that stuff and hit his spots with consistency, he could be a late-inning weapon.

Say Rafaela is JBJ (but who can also play SS on occasion) in one of his ~90 OPS+ years--are we happy with that for this year? What if that's his ceiling?

Dalbec & Reyes being listed as IF/OF makes me wince... hoping to never see that.

Dalbec is so skillful he can play OF and IF at the same time

Yeah, JBJ accumulated close to 20 WAR in his career. That's a really good player. I would be thrilled if Ceddane put that sort of career together. I think Ceddane probably has the better bat-to-ball skills, whereas JBJ had the significant edge in discipline. When all's said and done, I wouldn't be surprised if they had similar careers.

Hope springs eternal
Let’s start off with a W
Go Red Sox go. Win.
I sort of feel like the number of symbols in a letter is kind of complicated and I guess I wonder whether we're fucking with things to have there be some ambiguity on the first day of the year. Do haiku rules regard the name of the letter or the letter?

Whatever the answer, thinking about it makes me realize that double-u is a pretty fucked up letter. Whose idea was that?

Yeah W is a weird one. I chose to have it as 2 syllables for haiku purposes. We have enough intellectual firepower to weigh in on it.

And why isn't it the "double-V"?
