Today is the day. I've never started a game thread, never mind an opening day game thread. If there's some SOSH tradition of a particular person starting it besides me, feel free to delete this one and roll with that.

Brayan Bello takes the mound. Little Pedro. The lineup has some good hitters. Yeah, it stinks that they won't take the field til after 10:00pm eastern, but so what. Red Sox baseball is back. It's been a long, dreary offseason, and it's time to lace up the spikes and get to it.

So let's go Bello. Let's go Story. Let's go Raffy. Let's see Casas hit one to the moon. Let's see Duran race around the bases.

Let's get this party started. Let's go 1-0.

I've tried not to read too much about the Sox this off-season, here or elsewhere, because the doom and gloom gets really old. I'm cautiously optimistic about this team. And I'm happy baseball is back. Hit it, fellas.

The negativity was so oppressive that the schedulers decided to send the Sox to the west coast for the first 10 games!

Hooray for the beginning of the season.

Hooray for optimism.

Hooray for potential.

Hooray for actual baseball.

Go Sox. Win please.

The negative prognosticators don't think the Red Sox are going to be any good. Today, they, like the other 29 teams in MLB, start 0-0, a fresh start. I will be cautiously optimistic about this team until the play on the field gives me reason not to be.
Start out strong and let's go Red Sox!!

27 other teams at 0-0, 2 teams at 1-1.

Win today and then win another 95 times this year so I can win RR's fabulous no-prize.

Series 1: SOX vs SEATTLE

After mad mundane months, it is time to play ball.
I type on my keyboard, and I stare at my wall.
As I try to choose which cap to don and to doff,
I’ll recap the off season (which truly felt off.)

In October, we brought in Craig Breslow as “chief.”
(Our pitching is still thin. Can he toss in relief?)
Tom Werner proclaimed we’d be going "full throttle."
T’was poor rhetoric. (He is no Aristotle.)

The Sox did not thrust. It was more of an amble.
Urias was swapped for a pitcher named Campbell.
Then Verdugo who constantly heard Cora’s gripes
was sent packing for pitching. (He now wears pinstripes.)

With this surplus of arms, the Red Sox made a deal,
trading two to St. Louis for Tyler O’Neill
who brings a big bat and who could really be fun
(if we get him to hit like it’s still ’21.)

We got Brave in December and Poof! Chris was gone:
Sent to Atlanta for an infielder named Vaughn.
He got hurt right away. Not Sale. Sadly, Grissom.
He hasn’t played yet. We don’t know if we miss him.

We needed a starter. We signed Giolito:
A good move on paper that no one would veto.
The signing looked promising, but there was a hitch:
a tear in a ligament means Lucas can’t pitch.

We waited for more moves, but that was about all.
We let go of Turner, bid farewell to Duvall.
The rest was silence all the way through Spring Training
(except for the clamoring and the complaining.)

“We should sign Snell!” “Go all in on Montgomery!”
To say it was hell would be a good summary.
The Red Sox stayed pat till both those options were gone.
But we were not done yet! We released CJ Cron.

Now, thank God, at long last, it is opening day.
We’ll find out if these (non) moves prove wise as we play.
Will it be a nightmare or impossible dream?
Either way we are here and we’ll cheer for our team.

We’ll embrace the pitchers who fight for the banner.
We’ve got Brayan, Kutter, Nick, Garrett, and Tanner
The pressure on these guys is sure to be hefty.
They’ll be all right (because we don’t have a lefty.)

As relievers go, I’m not sure who’s a poser.
(In fact, I’ll admit, I’m not sure who’s our closer.)
I think it’s still Jansen, (Though he could be partin’)
We could use Winckowski or we could use Martin.
Anderson, Weissert, Slaten, Rodriguez, Campbell
might all prove to be great. (It’s always a gamble.)

As far as the offense: we’ll excite the masses.
There’s Duran and Devers and Story and Casas.
There’s O’Neill and Yoshida, Valdez and Abreu.
Catchers Wong and McGuire can both pitch in, too.
Rafaela and Reyes will fight for their spot,
And who knows, maybe Dalbec will somehow get hot.

As Refsnyder and Grissom await in the wings,
I’m excited to see what this new season brings.
Believe in the boys as they begin their battle.
Stay up and be sleepless. Let’s go sweep Seattle!

Once the clock chimes midnight day of game all bets are off. The only tradition of which I am aware is that the consequence of an opening day game thread loss is an old fashioned stoning by an angry fire breathing mob, so good luck!! ;) Sink the Mariners!!!

It's opening day, and I think this team is better than it's given credit for. They will make some noise and do some damage. And they will be a lot of fun to watch. And maybe, just maybe....

Fuck the Yankees. Fuck the O's. Fuck the Jays. Fuck the Rays. But most of all fuck the haters. This may not be the team we wanted but it's the team we got, and it's time to fan up.

It. Is. ON.

Any chance the game threads won't immediately dissolve into a toxic brew of irrational anger this season? Hope springs anew!
I mean, you see what the main board has devolved into, right?

Anyways, I'm optimistic about this team if health breaks right. I think the Pivetta is going to have the best season of his career with this new sweeper, I think Bello is going to throw 190 innings or so of 3.5-4 ERA ball, and Crawford something similar, and I think the rest of the rotation is going to be solid. I think the offense is going to be spectacular, with Story returning to form and Grissom breaking out, and I think the worries about the bullpen are strange given how much they appear to have improved to me -- Campbell is already a stud, and I think Weissert and Slaten have a great chance of being breakout relievers.

Can't wait to see what they do tonight.

Man I wish I had the same optimism as many of you.
My dear friend, it's all just a choice to hope. I'm fully aware of how things could break badly: Pivetta's arm falls off, Triston Casas is sucked into a plane's turbine while tripping on acid, etc. I'm just choosing to ignore that, because if it in fact happens, I'll just spend my free time watching or imbibing some other gross domestic product and act like I never believed in the first place.

I've got 3/29 at 12:07 AM EDT in the pool of when I'll first post "Dude, this is a game thread. Where do you think you are, the main board?" ;)
Well now nobody gets to make that crack. I hope you're happy

LynnRice is back and back big!

I hope the competitors respect each other and the game, have orange slices, be kind to the umpires, and feel the satisfaction of trying hard when the game is over. It is about the self-realization of athletic competition, through which we all have a chance for self reflection on our daily journeys to endeavor to be incrementally better than the day before. That is the only winning that has permanence or meaning. And we have already achieved it. It is a blessing, friends.

Also, fuck the Mariners with a rusty javelin. I hope we dominate those disgusting punks.

We've had a really, really good Spring, I think. Basically, with the exception of the Giolito injury, little has gone wrong and a ton has gone right. We just shellacked the defending champs in a pair of exhibitions. Let's carry that momentum into the season.

Well, when you post it for the second time.

Meanwhile, just because @BaseballJones hijacked your appointed duties doesn''t mean you won't suffer the consequences should they lose tonight.
You'll just have company

Here’s hoping Sunday evening’s backward glance prompts us to say, “We Slew Seattle.”

Thereafter we’ll graduate Oakland with “Straight A’s” and then take “Flights of Angels” from Anaheim who will ‘sing’ them to Monday’s rest.

Go West, young men, and when you finally return, bring home a zero in the loss column.

Fuck. I screwed myself out of all those winnings.... ;)

No hijack, I didn't think I merited that appointment based on the set criteria, and passed it on. And it's always been snooze and lose, and last night I literally snoozed. And oh, they're not going to lose, but should they, I've been fending off stones around here for a long, long, long time. Bring it. And none of you guys are fast enough to catch me and tie me to a stake. I'm old but I'm fast.

@LynnRice75 is honoring us with his return.
I think I may pen a poem at the start of each series rather than the start of each game this year.
(The 162 poems certainly did not work any magic on the team's record last season.)
We will see how it goes.

Meanwhile, it seems cruel to go without baseball all winter then be given a late West Coast game.
I will enjoy the watching much more than the waiting.

Seattle demons aside I feel pretty good about tonight, I think they win this one.

And they'd better because I am staying up for it.
