This year's tournament is fast approaching and teams are taking shape. Canada has named 18 players so far.
The initial roster was confirmed following the close of the NHL regular season, and includes:

    • Goaltender: Darcy Kuemper (Saskatoon, Sask./Arizona)
    • Defencemen: Thomas Chabot (Sainte-Marie-de-Beauce, Que./Ottawa), Vince Dunn (Lindsay, Ont./St. Louis), Joel Edmundson (Brandon, Man./St. Louis), Aaron Ekblad (Windsor, Ont./Florida), Darnell Nurse (Hamilton, Ont./Edmonton), Colton Parayko (St. Albert, Alta./St. Louis) and Ryan Pulock (Dauphin, Man./New York Islanders)
    • Forwards: Mathew Barzal (Coquitlam, B.C./New York Islanders), Anthony Beauvillier (Sorel-Tracy, Que./New York Islanders), Jordan Eberle (Regina, Sask./New York Islanders), Bo Horvat (Rodney, Ont./Vancouver), Connor McDavid (Newmarket, Ont./Edmonton), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (Burnaby, B.C./Edmonton), Brayden Schenn (Saskatoon, Sask./St. Louis), Jaden Schwartz (Wilcox, Sask./St. Louis), Ryan O’Reilly (Varna, Ont./Buffalo) and Jean-Gabriel Pageau (Ottawa/Ottawa)
Some news on the U.S. team.

Amazing how many former top prospects are on the Oilers yet they are still on the outside looking in.

Legit question. Who will end their career with more IIHF world championships: Connor McDavid or Alexander Ovechkin? (Currently 3-1 in favor of Ovie)

    Ovie
He is an icon, and will be good enough for another decade. McDavid will end up on a good team somewhere, and if not will not play. Wc tend to favor European teams top.

One of the best parts of this clip is the guy on the right never moves. Everyone else is doing something, but he's just a man of stone.

And with the Caps looking at a first round exit - Ovie should be added to the roster in a few days. ;)

Kinkaid, Darling, and someone named Charlie Lindgren do not inspire much confidence for the goaltending position.

So disappointed in so many Canadian players who have refused the call. Yet so many European players even from teams that didn't go down until the end of round two have stepped up for their countries. Enough to make one lose interest.

It's an amazing contrast with the WJC, which is such a big thing for Hockey Canada that, regardless of where the tournament's held, the ice and boards advertise Canadian companies almost exclusively. By comparison, the senior tournament certainly gets the short end of the stick.

As far as how to fix it, I don't know if there's a way to. You can't imagine HC will ever get the power to impress players into travelling to the far corners of the hockey world to skate for their country in a non-WC/Olympic year. I mean, they're absolutely not going to do it with top-tier players like Crosby, MacKinnon, Bergeron, etc., so how do they do that for anyone else that needs to focus on their NHL careers over helping the suits in Calgary.

Well Canada and the U.S both advanced to the semi-finals with victories today. Canada beat the Russians 5-4 in OT with McDavid leading the way with three assists. The U.S. downed the Czechs 3-2 with Patrick Kane scoring twice.

After defeating both Canada and the United States, the Finns were the upset victim in their quarter final losing to the Swiss, So in the semi-finals Canada plays Switzerland while the U.S. will play Sweden. The Swedes narrowly downed Latvia 3-2 in their quarter final.

When you outshoot a team 46 to 16 and lose, either your goalie was very bad or the other goalie was fantastic. In this game a 3-2 win for the Swiss over Canada both were true. So the U.S. and Canada will play for the Bronze while the Swis will face Sweden for Gold. One can't be mad at the players who accepted to play but it sure hurts how many turned down the invite.

Well congrats to the U.S. for winning the Bronze with a 4-1 win over Canada. Didn't catch 90% of the game as it conflicted with church but the U.S, was ahead 2-1 scoring two powerplay goals when I got home. With 3 minutes left to play the Canadian coach pulled the goalie and the result was 2 empty net goals resulting in the 4-1 win.
I can't blame the players that showed up to play for Canada, the ones who turned the team down on the other hand. The bottom line is they weren't quite good enough and the coaching was questionable as well.

Well the Swiss almost did it, it took a great save by the Swedish goalie late in overtime to send it to a shootout and the higher skilled Swedes ended up winning the tournament with a 3-2 victory.

Sweden hit the post in the last seconds it was an exciting finish but the best team won. As a British ex pat living in Sweden I was also pleased to see GBR win the 1A league to Join the big boys next season
