Bedard is doing a Q&A on BSJ right now. He thinks there is a high possibility that the Patriots use the SF pick to acquire a big name player that can help the team now rather than holding onto it.
Is that based on news and rumors etc or analysis and opinion though?

Dude is flat out making shit up.
I think they all are calling around to teams that have had any discussions with Pats, and some of the teams are dishing. There will be endless speculation until the deadline, or the next deal. They are miffed JG deal was gift wrapped for Schefter.

My sense is that his comments are part sourced and part opinion. He made another comment saying that the AFC is wide open and that the right move could make them the favorites again. He thinks that Tom really needs help now that both Edelman and Hightower are lost for the year. Therefore BB cashed in Jimmy G for the additional draft capital to go get that help.

The problem here is that the list of obvious sellers is very small. Cleveland, San Fran, Indy, Giants, Tampa Bay would seemingly be out of the wild card hunt. Everyone else could make an argument that they are still a potential wild card team. Maybe that’s not reasonable for teams like Chicago, Cincy, Jets, Lions, Cardinals, Redskins. But just looking at the W/L record those teams still have a shot at the division or the wild card. Pats are clearly buyers now but not sure there is going to be a market for that shiny new 2nd rounder. Defensive help might need to come as less flashy depth.

Indeed. More entertaining and informative than anything else on the media.

MOD NOTE:
Changed title to make it a Pats-only deadline game thread.

With a fresh 2nd round in hand, it's popcorn time!

Lots of needs (WR, LB, DL), and now this extra asset. Having this second rounder really does open up all kinds of trade possibilities for the Patriots if they want immediate help. A huge factor is going to be cap space - lots of teams (towards the bottom of the standings) would love that second rounder and would be willing to part with talent now to acquire it, but can the Pats afford a good player? We shall see.

Regarding the cap space, I believe the salary would be prorated, yeah? So, even though we have about $6m in space, as we're about halfway through the season, we can add someone with roughly a $12m hit. Is that correct?

now this extra asset
I think there's a decent shot that this 2nd rounder isn't viewed as an extra asset, but more so a replacement for lost assets(Deflategate). I think they're clearly showing the holes left by the forfeited picks this year and an extra second rounder is needed to fill those gaps going forward.

Well maybe they can trade their own 2nd rounder (if necessary) to acquire a really good player now, and then keep SF's 2nd rounder for the draft. Then in effect, they've trade JG for on-field talent that will help now, and they will likely move up about 28-30 spots in the draft as well.

That's true. I think if they do anything it'll be for lower picks though. How many of these in-season trades include a second rounder? I can think of one and it happened yesterday.

I feel very confident that BB does not view any asset as a "replacement" or "compensation" or any other thing. You have a second rounder now. Call it whatever you want, doesnt make a lick of difference how you think about it.

And for the record, I'm told the two teams that need and WANT Jarvis Landry are in Miami's division. So don't expect him to be moved today.
As posted elsewhere, this is Landry's last year of his rookie deal. Watch him sign a ridiculous deal next year (most likely not by Pats).

...and Rotoworld reports "MIA told Landry he will not be traded"

Jordan Ranaan on ESPN.com thinks Casillas back to the Pats makes a lot sense for a 6th or 7th.

LB Jonathan Casillas: He’s the Giants’ defensive captain and has little desire to leave his hometown of New Jersey. It would be a hard sell to the locker room if he's moved. But if the Patriots, with Dont'a Hightower out for the season, came calling, it would be a win-win for the Giants and Casillas. He’s in the final year of his deal and could return as a free agent in the offseason if both sides desired. The Patriots would be receiving a familiar face who knows their scheme, coach Bill Belichick’s program and what it takes to win a Super Bowl. The Giants would be receiving draft capital to help them moving forward, even if it’s a sixth or seventh-round pick.

I'm looking at the bottom teams and I see a couple possibilities (from Pats POV) for trade targets:
  • Jabaal Sheard (although his contract hit might be too much for the Colts to take
  • Ty Hilton (rumored to be on the trade block)
  • Kenny Britt (another contract issue and Cleveland likely will want to keep their top FA signing)
  • Cameron Brate (Tampa drafted OJ Howard in the first round this year, so maybe they would be ready to move Brate)
  • Gerald McCoy (add some depth up the middle)

Some twitter rumors about Larry Fitz at Logan. Can't make this stuff up...
Not picking on you specifically ... but when people say "some twitter rumors," I wish they'd take the time to say where those twitter rumors come from

There was a picture of a person looking like Larry Fitzgerald at a Hertz rental counter.

"Hey Larry when you get off the plane we're going to need you to go to the rental counter. Your midsize is waiting for you."

No shot.
I would agree. That said, it makes a ton of sense for Larry Fitzgerald AND Landry to get moved so wanted to relay it. Also why I didn't source it since it shouldn't be seen as significantly credible.

My comment wasn't toward you so sorry if I made it seem that way. It's just funny that somebody tweeted a picture of the person and thought it was Larry Fitzgerald.

Then why post it at all?

It's a trade deadline game thread. It's worth discussion since it would make sense.

Feel free to ignore it.

LOL. Peter King got duped by a fake Schefter account saying BB signs Kaepernick.
He had to delete it and Tweet out an apology. Good times.
