Will be interesting to see how the draft shakes out. The list of names changes a bit for Miami. Hargreaves may still fall to them at 13. I'm assuming Jack will be long gone, but LB might not be a pressing need with Alonso in the fold. Shaq Lawson or Noah Spence could be DEs in play.

Ezekiel Elliott might also be on the radar. If there is no defensive stud on the board at 13, Miami might pull the trigger on Elliott to replace Lamar Miller.

The problem with this team the past decade is that they can amass a handful of decent players but fail to draft true game-changing players.
That's how you wind up in a perpetual state of mediocrity, with these short-sighted, half-ass, "rebuilds".

I am happy they aren't losing the pick.
The actual "loss" is impossible to tell since the drop off from #8-13 is just speculation at this point. I'm willing to admit that it may wind up negligible, so in that regard I can at least see the logic in taking the calculate risk.

More than the injuries, what worries me are numerous reports I've seen that indicate Alonzo doesn't have a high football-IQ or work ethic.
That certainly may all be conjecture and bashing a guy who's going out the door, but it's not what I was hoping to see.
It does make me think about how a guy thought to be a defensive genius (Ryan) could show up to Buffalo and see him as a disposable asset. I realize much of that could have been scheme, but again, it does taper any excitement.

Rex Ryan also made Mario Williams an OLB. Not saying it's Rex's fault that Williams isn't a fit in a 3-4, but he did manage to make waste of his best defensive player. I don't think he should be viewed as the standard by which players are judged.

I'm not making excuses for Alonso, but I read some similar things as you did. He was coming back from injury and was learning a new role in a new defense and was playing tentatively. Everything I've read says he's a very instinctual player and is at his best when he's attacking and not reading and reacting. Hopefully a move back to a 4-3 MLB will allow him to go out there and play freely without having to think and process so much.

Things have been awfully quiet on the Rishard Matthews front. He's the one guy from last year they need to bring back. He's a perfect complement to Parker on the outside with Landry working the slot. Let's face it, targeting Landry 165 times a year is stupid, and its going to get him killed. Its a damn shame the way past regimes have found a way to bury Matthews' talent on the depth chart. If he gets a fair shake from a reps perspective in the coming season, he seems like a sure-fire bet to outperform the contract he's likely to receive on the open market.

All the talk about Lamar Miller and OV has this guy flying way under the radar - its insanity.

WHY would you ever want your team to use the #13 pick on a RB when you can find a decent RB on the waiver wire for just cash? Hasn't the last five years taught you anything about how easy it is to get a 1000-yard RB (or tandem) without having to blow a high pick. Heck, on your team you've got Lamar Miller who was taken in the 4th.

Since 2011, the following RBs who were taken in the 3rd round or later have been starting quality:
Demarco Murray
Alfred Morris
Arian Foster
Benjarvus Green-Ellis
Jamaal Charles
Justin Forsett
Frank Gore
Lamar Miller
Chris Ivory
Fred Jackson
Joique Bell
CJ Anderson
Latavius Murray
Devonta Freeman
LeGarrette Blount
Ahmad Bradshaw
Thomas Rawls
Rashad Jennings
Andre Ellington
James Starks

I for one, hope the Dolphins use a high first round pick on a RB.

Just saying its a possibility if there isn't a defensive stud available. 13 is probably too high for a guard, and if Jack, Buckner, Hargreaves, Bosa, Ramsey, and Lawson are all gone by 13, he's someone that could be on their radar.

Miami got Ajayi in the 5th last year. I'd be fine with them signing a vet to back him up now that Lamar Miller is officially gone to the Texans.

Hoooooooly shit that Vernon contract is outrageous. Miami far, far better off with Williams in the short term.

17 million/year for a guy with one 10 sack season and half a season of elite play is crazy.

I was never an OV fan. He really sucked against the run.

I was driving home listening to nfl radio and I had the idea that Miami should offer Tannehill to Denver for a pick. Then sign Fitz or some other stop gap.

Soooooo CJ Anderson... That'll do.

Just as a quick FYI, in 3 games against the Patriots, he averaged 7.0 yards/carry and 5.39 yards/carry against the AFC East as a whole throughout his career.

the pundits are all killing the dolphins for losing Miller, OV and Grimes ("three of their top 12 players"). LOL. If those are three of your top 12 players, you are not a good football team...oh wait, that's right.

Again, I am all in on the dumpster fire model. the problem is they whiffed on the top four guards in FA and the top CBs and Safeties. Even with Ross ridiculous $$, no one wants to go there. That's an indictment on the front office and the QB, IMO.

the sooner they dump Tannehill, the better. Let Gase bring in his guy and develop him (this assumes he didn't endorse Tannehill to the FO in order to get the job). But I guess they are obligated financially to give Tannehill one year under Gase.

whatever, this team doesn't win more than 4-5 games

I believe that in the previous thread I said I would be all for bringing Miller back in the 4-5 million range but wouldn't break the bank to keep him or Vernon. It seems like Miami drew their line at 4.5 and he obviously got significantly more than that from the Texans. Anderson's offer is 4.5/year.

While Anderson and Ajayi's skill sets overlap a bit more than Miller and Ajayi would have, I think with the concerns around Ajayi's health, they couldn't just hand the job over to him. Anderson obviously has experience and success with Gase.

Running backs are replaceable cogs in the machine, blah, blah, blah. I feel better having an experienced vet to go along with Ajayi. That fact that he's familiar with the offense the new coach will run is just a bonus.

Really surprising Denver matched the deal without a QB in place and with Miller's pending big bucks.

The only other veteran name that springs to mind is Alfred Morris. Arian Foster is still available, but his health is always a question mark and he's coming off of a pretty major injury. I could see Miami making a run at either of those two for a one or two year deal.

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. This hasn't been the best off-season for Elway and the Broncos. It appears, at least to me, that Denver's decision to keep C.J. was partially, if not primarily, reactionary. With their inability to keep Brock or land another QB (Kap) in a trade at the moment, they risked having $$ with nothing "worthwhile" to spend it on. Not to mention a whole helluva lot of change for their offense. Not sure if that's a great reason to pay a solid, all-around RB 4.5/per.

I get Miami's interest, and as a fan, I would have been tolerable of the addition. I think Gase would have fed the shit out of him, and his ability in the passing game would have been a nice component. But I'd much prefer to see Miami add a cheap veteran on a short deal, and then draft a RB.

Meanwhile, if Miami was going to throw large money at another position, I would have liked to see it at CB (Sean Smith?) or guard (Penn?). Similar to the RB position, I understand the philosophy of not spending heavy on interior lineman, but several failed draft picks later, Tanny's still getting mauled every game.

The FO needs to nail this draft.

I'm guessing they still sign a veteran CB and RB before the draft. They've signed Bushrod as their backup guard/emergency tackle. That way they can go into the draft without any gaping holes in the team. They still should be looking to draft a CB or Safety, LB, RB, OG, and probably DE.

speaks volumes of the FO and the QB that Miami cannot get anyone to sign with them despite being in freaking Miami and the fact that they have 0% state income tax

I think players will like Gase' system, but no one wants to play with Tannehill and the team is basically a dumpster fire

Miami claimed Ifo Ekpre-Olomu off waivers.

Pretty much a no risk signing. If he can get healthy, he has a high upside, but that's a big if at this point.

I thought the Daniel Thomas signing was a cruel April Fool's joke. :(
The other day I saw that on another message board and thought someone had pulled up an old thread.
I guess back to square one is repeating the same mistakes...

When he was with the team: The way I always described him was that he was a guy who would get as many yards as the hole allowed.
So really, about as low a compliment as you can get for a RB, since any fringe NFL back should be able to accomplish that. I
'd have preferred any fringe-RB off the street, since it wouldn't have stirred up the echos of failures past, and the uncertainty of the unknown could have at least provided some false sense of optimism.

In the grand scheme of things, he's a body. He's an insurance policy in case Miami doesn't draft a RB. It allows them the flexibility to say on paper they are ok at RB and they don't need to reach for one in the second round of the value isn't there. They've done that at DB and DE. Are they the best players? No, but they have enough guys where they don't HAVE to come away from the draft with a RB or a LB. it's the same reason they brought Foster in. If they don't draft a RB, he's still an option.

Should they upgrade those units? Absolutely, but their strategy has been to plug holes and go into the draft looking to take the BPA.

Miami reportedly one of the teams now interested in Josh Norman.

I hope they stay far away. Norman would make sense if Miami was a shutdown corner away from serious contention. They are not. Norman is 28 and just came off of his first legitimately elite season. Sure, it could be an example of a guy from a small school finally coming into his own. Or it could be a guy playing really well in a contract year.

Miami undoubtedly could use someone like Norman, but he isn't going to make the difference between them making or missing the playoffs. Draft a corner in the first round or two and save the crazy money that Norman is going to demand.

none of the draftees the Dolphins are being linked to are particularly inspiring. Hargreaves seems the most common and I am not sure he is any good. I really hope and pray Elliot is there and Miami trades down to a team that wants him. Dolphins need extra picks.

Did I read correctly that Miami is like $43M under the expected cap for 2017? is that related to Suh and THill deals?

OverTheCap.com has it at $41MM, but that ranks 11th-least in the NFL. They only have 31 players under contract through 2017, so that $40-whatever will get filled up pretty quickly.

Yea I mean the best case scenario is if someone like Jack falls to them due to his injury concern. Apple seems raw and Hargreaves, while more polished and NFL ready, seems undersized for the scheme that they want to run on defense. William Jackson from Houston seems more like a second rounder than a guy you take at 13.

It smells like Miami wants Elliott. I don't think he falls to 13. Dallas, NY, and Chicago could all draft him. I think it's been established that running backs are replaceable cogs in the wheel, but he legitimately might be the BPA by a wide margin at 13 and would fill a need. Trading back would be the savvy thing to do, but I wouldn't lose sleep over Elliott being the pick, if no one like Jack or Bosa falls into their laps.

I agree. Well put.

I would like to see them take Hogan or cardale or another QB in the 4th round. And draft a LB, CB, S, RB and guard

A bit intrigued by Jackson, the CB from Houston.

Admittedly I haven't been paying that much attention however. I used to go insane watching tape, reading, watching and trying to absorb every bit of information I could about the draft, but all that did was leave me pissed off and depressed after every Dolphins draft through the Ireland years.
I've tried to take a more "ignorance is bliss" approach the past few years.

One of the biggest reasons I'm skeptical of Jackson is D.J. Hayden. Another Houston corner that seemingly came out of nowhere, got a bunch of hype, got selected in the first round, and has been largely a bust. Maybe it isn't a completely fair comparison, but I would be largely disappointed if that's Miami's guy at 13.

Happy Draft Day!

Unlike the majority of the board, we actually have something to look forward to tonight.

My wish list for #13 in order:

Myles Jack
Ezekiel Elliott
Vernon Hargreaves III
Any consensus top 10 guy that falls (IE, Bosa, Tunsil)
Eli Apple

There are some rumblings that Miami is preparing for possibly moving back into the #8 pick with Cleveland to select Elliott is he's available. I think this only happens if Myles Jack is already off the board. I get the feeling that Jack and Elliott are the two guys Miami covets. If Jack is off the board, Miami may move up the board to ensure they get one of "their guys."

I'm not a fan of trading up to get Elliott. I think that Miami is going to see someone fall to them at 13 if they just stay put. IMO, a worst case scenario is if Jack, Elliott, and Hargreaves are all off the board. Then they're stuck staring down the barrel of Eli Apple. In that scenario, I'd rather they trade back and maybe look at getting Alexander or Ragland in the 20's.

I doubted Tannenbaum, but he goes and hacks Tunsil's twitter and he got an elite talent at 13 along with the two defensive starters...

In all seriousness though, I'm not entirely sure what to make of the pick. It is and a risk I'm not sure I would have taken especially in the current NFL climate.
I will say that during that during his interview he certainly seemed like a guy with a chip on his shoulder, and that's never a bad thing...I just hope he's the man that he says he is and then this will be great.
I am guessing though that the coverage of this will skew negative in the national media simply because it's the Dolphins.

Holy shit!!!!

I cannot believe they got Tunsil. The video seems to be a few years old. Maybe the first time I've ever believed a guy when he says his account got hacked.

My guess is Albert moves inside to LG and Tunsil takes over at LT. Moving to LG might extend Alberts career an extra year or two, and Tunsil is the heir apparent anyways.

Tunsil-Albert-Pouncey-Turner-James

Wow. If they can keep those guys heathy, it might be a big year for the offense.

Grier was quoted that they had him as #2 player on their board. They had heard rumors of the video and said it was two years old.

I think you are right re: the o-line

I think you are wrong about the offense considering the QB is still Tannehill. He could be given 30 seconds every time and he'd still get sacked 40 times a year
