Roy Williams finalizing an extension:
http://www.scout.com/college/north-carolina/story/1552367-unc-finalizing-new-contract-for-roy-williams

His current deal runs through 2018 already, so this may be more of a show of support to prove to recruits he's not going anywhere.  But he's still only 64 so maybe he plans on being there another 10 years.

Edit: Yup, more about recruiting than anything else:

ESPN's Jeff Goodman, on SC, said that Wiliams has three years left on his current contract and most schools want their coaches to have four years left so they can assure recruits they will be playing for the same coaches. Goodman said North Carolina has been "getting crushed" with negative recruiting by other schools in connection to the NCAA investigation, with some players being told that if they attend North Carolina they might not be able to play in the NCAA tournament. The NCAA notice of allegations was made public Thursday and Williams was mentioned only once in the 59-page report. He has not been linked to the school's long-running academic fraud scandal.

Rich get richer. #2 Tatum to Duke, over UNC, Kentucky, and St Louis.

His best friend/roommate is #1 Giles.

Hopefully they see what best friends Okafor/Jones just did at Duke...

Big get. A lot of talk Giles is waiting to the fall to commit, but definitely is a leg up there.

The worst kept secret in North Carolina is Giles is going to Duke.  Surprised he hasn't announced already to be honest.

It's Wake Forest that is holding up Giles. I am 99% certain he will go to Duke, but Wake has his attention (per an AAU coach).

Dennis Smith and Seventh Woods are the guys I'm hoping choose Carolina that we have a realistic shot at.

We're running behind with a lot of these guys and it's probably the most important class under Roy's tenure.  Can't afford to miss when three of the top 10 Rivals players are from NC but it feels like they're going to.

I think we are going to miss on the class, unfortunately. We're just positioned terribly with the NOA and Duke coming off a championship season with three Freshmen.

I was in Bed Bath and Beyond yesterday late afternoon, after Tatum announced, and saw a guy wearing a Wake Forest shirt.  I left out an audible snort when I saw it, all in the context of "Giles considering Wake Forest".

Seems like Woods would be the perfect fit for Duke's Class of 2016 after Duke wins another championship next year.

Think Woods is going to stay in South Carolina.  Frank Jackson's a lot more likely for Duke.

Capel has to be the best recruiter in the game right now.  He may get a head coaching job next year, had his chances this year but stayed.  But if he stays, he's got to be the guy to replace Coach K.  One thing Duke changed last season, they used to divide scouting during the season among all the assistants.  Each assistant would do a handful of games, spread out over the season.  Now the other assistants take the work they prep to Capel first, and he turns it into a full gameplan for the team.  It's been a huge factor in their success.   Capel returning was the best thing to happen to the program in 15+ years, and I am including Coach K taking over USA Hoops.

On another note, it appears Duke has hired Nolan Smith in some sort of role, the expectation being the next assistant job to open up will go to him.  So Nate James or Scheyer could go join Collins or Wojo's staff at some point and Nolan would be ready to step in.

The buzz I've been getting is that Capel is being groomed as the successor to K at this point. If you had told me this in the summer of 1995, I would have told you that you were insane and there was no way Capel would even be a coach. But he appears to have a great ability to connect with kids, and while I don't know much about his overall in-game strategy from the time he was at Oklahoma, I would imagine it employs a lot of the flexibility that K shows in his game plans from year to year as well.

Goduke.com has an hour long season retrospective up with interviews with playera and coaches and video from the season. Great stuff about some private moments and what they meant to the team.

Watch this.  K is dialing up 2 points with 5 minutes left in the tied National Championship game with the least-used player on his roster.

At 0:02 in, K tells Winslow to stay planted in the corner - his defender will lock on him there to prevent him getting the ball.  WInslow stays put.

Next, at 0:03 in, K yells at Tyus and points, saying 'give the ball to grayson allen then go over there', further spreading the floor, which he does.  Now Allen has the ball.

0:07, Allen looks at K thinking 'now what?' and K whirls his finger, meaning 'look, i just gave you a mismatch with Dekkar - just drive around him and score'

And Allen does, and Duke takes the lead.  With a play drawn up on the fly for the #8 player in his rotation.  With 5 minutes left in the National Championship game.

K is fucking unreal.

When it's all said and done, this class is going to rival the Brand/Battier/Burgess/Avery class and last year's for his best ever. On a little bit of a roll right now.

Obama told the crowd he could find some similarities between his popularity and that of the Duke team.

"I can relate to this program," Obama said. "Does well in the classroom. Won twice in the past four years. Know what it's like for people to oppose you no matter what you try to do. When I flip on ESPN and I see a documentary about how people still 'hate' Christian Laettner -- a guy who played for Duke 23 years ago. I realize, well, maybe I don't have it so bad. Or I think this is going to be a long 23 years."

North Carolina is T1 (with Kentucky) and Duke is 4th in the first coaches poll.  Other ACC teams ranked are Virginia at 6 and Notre Dame at 18.

I do not understand how a team that lost 12 games last year and is basically the same team this year is expected to magically get so much better just because the same crap players are a year older?

Harry Giles tore his ACL again and is out for the season.

I think he had eliminated UNC but Duke was obviously very involved as was Wake and Kentucky.

ESPN said he's announcing it tomorrow on Sportscenter at noon.

This is the other knee as well, not the same one he had previously injured.

I can't decide if that is better or worse for him. My initially thought is worse because maybe he's completely made of glass and it's not just one weak joint, but I have no idea. Any info as to how it happened?

Giles, a senior at Oak Hill, was fouled 1:59 into the game on a drive to the basket and subsequently asked to be removed from the game.

He had also had a hand injury before this that he was just coming back from.

Sounds like partial tear according to his dad, not full tear.

Sucks for Duke getting him that he misses a year of development, but whatever it's against inferior competition. They can bring him to Duke Med and hopefully have him ready to be practicing by next summer when he arrives on campus.

They can't rehab him until he's officially enrolled in classes.

Might want to tap the brakes anyway since Wake has been making up a lot of ground.

I do think he picks Duke but if he did go to the Deacs along with the newly-decommitted from Rutgers Kwe Parker it wouldn't be a massive upset.

He was going to announce in Winston Salem. He's not any more - he just changed that. Seems ominous for Wake.

Red - I'm sure he could choose Duke U medical center on his own free will; either way the docs at the school he announces for are going to closely advise his family on the best local doc/path forward.

Duke is gonna have the best recruiting class 3 years in a row and the first year of that run they won the natty.

Can K get to 6 or 7? He's 68, could probably do 5 more years...

86, 99, 02, 04, 06, 11...could have made a run at 10 if a couple of those had panned out...

02 bothers me the most because it all boiled down to Williams and his second-half issue with free throws that was such a dumb problem for someone that good to have.

With him, Tony Bradley, and Brandon Robinson UNC has gotten a much better class than it looked like they might six weeks ago. It's not in Duke's realm obviously but at least competitive.

Duke v Kentucky tomorrow in Chicago

I think Kentucky wins as I think their young talent on the whole is probably a little better right now than Duke's young talent, but these mid-November games are pretty meaningless over the long run of the season. Duke's defense sucked at this time last year and finished the year as one of the top in the country.

Duke was actually bigger (taller) at each starting position.

UK has a PG, tho, who's really good (Ulis), and their freshmen are more polished right now.

The starting lineup for Duke was the 4 "vets" and a frosh. That will not be the case by the end of the year.

Where is Obi? He sucks that much after a year to learn the system that he can't get any PT at all??

I don't think this is a FF team based on what I've seen. They have some pieces, and I think Matt Jones is the real deal after two years of a supporting role, but Allen is going to have some growing pains in terms of consistency, and Thornton will need to grow into a capable true point quickly to be able to have a good run. This won't be a bad team by any means, but last year's team overcame its lack of depth because of pure top-end talent, and this team isn't there. Will be enjoyable to watch them develop, but I see this as a year to build on.
