Yeah, I obviously don't watch them as much as you guys, but I'd think a shorter rotation would actually hurt Boston, as their strength is depth and guys not having to play too many minutes, hence the ability to play pressure defense all game, every game.

How many minutes are the Coaches and GM going to be playing? What influence will they have in tanking from here on out unless you're implying the coaches will purposely be fixing games?
I'm not implying anything. I'm saying flat out that the coaches and GMs, specifically in LA and Phoenix, will actively try to lose games. It happens every season from teams at the bottom of the standings, why would this season be any different? Guys with minor injuries will be shut down. Veterans will be traded off for a nickel on the dollar. Guys like Robert Sacre and Ronnie Price will start playing key minutes in March and April. Don't know why anyone would think my position is controversial. Why wouldn't coaches and GMs want to lose games once their teams are toast? People think LA, who only keep their pick if it's in the top 3, are going to try to win games in the spring? Why?

To be fair, Byron Scott has already been tanking all season by the mere fact of his existence, so it remains to be seen how much farther he can take it.

The Suns really look like a great bet for a bottom three finish, unfortunately, likely at the expense of the Nets.

Starting with the game against Philly in which Bledsoe got hurt, the Suns are 1-8. Their point differential per game in that stretch is -12.1. (Philly on the year is actually -12.1 pts/game). Over their last 17 games, they are 3-14 with a -9.2 pts/game differential.

During their 3-14 stretch, they've lost games to the Bucks, Jazz, Nuggets, 76ers, Kings, and Lakers. I guess we can take some solace in the fact that the Nets have not been much better over their last 17 games (4-13 w/ a -7.9 pts/game differential).

This is painful to watch because wins are so few and far in between for the bottom teams, so for the Nets to pass the Suns, it's probably going to take a few painful weeks.

With no reason to tank and Hollis-Jefferson coming back in mid-February, it is getting more difficult to picture the Nets finishing worse than the Suns.

The Twolves are in a 4-20 stretch and 1/2 game better than the Nets. The Nets may finish 5th or 6th, nevermind top 3.

Brooklyn has 12 wins. 10 of the wins come against teams with winning records.

Obviously Brooklyn is pretty terrible (hence 12 wins), but the downside is this is mainly a roster of NBA vets. They show up, compete (except Joe Johnson, although he might just be cooked) and for the most part, know what they're doing on a basketball court. I can't see them catching Phily or LA in the loss column because they aren't playing teenagers and D-Leaguers. I just hope they don't eke out enough wins to move off that #3 pick.

The Nets bench is horrific and one can argue consists of several players who shouldn't be in the league and/or will be out of the league within two years. They are also starting a backcourt of Donald Sloan and Wayne Ellington. Certain night the veterans can carry them and catch an opponent sleeping but I wouldn't worry about them reeling off 4 in a row or 5 out of 7 anytime this season.

How the *fuck* has Joe Johnson played almost 1600 minutes and only recorded ONE block? You almost have to actively avoid playing defense to do this.
JJ's intensity level was the topic of conversation over at CelticsNuts earlier in the year. I attended the Celtics/Nets game when they didn't show up and we cruised to a 30-point win. JJ played about 30 minutes and I'm not joking when I say it was possible he didn't work up a sweat. Literally half jog to the halfcourt line, walk to spot up for 3. Trot back to halfcourt on D, walk back to follow his man. It was comical to say the least.

He would fit right in on the Rockets...

While I assume Sheridan is just making this up, it would sure be interesting...
Brandon Jennings could very well end up in Brooklyn two weeks from now in a trade that would send Thaddeus Young to the Detroit Pistons, sources tell SheridanHoops.com.
That moves seems like a step backwards in terms of talent, but is probably such a big improvement at the PG position that it might end up helping.

Agreed that the PG situation is so bad that almost anyone is an upgrade at this point.

Even w/o Jennings, the Nets have Sactown, Philly, and Denver coming up. All winnable games.

Then, they have @Phoenix and @LAL as part of a 9 game road trip at the end of February. Probably the two biggest single games remaining for determining lottery positions...

The real problem at this point is that the Nets have no incentive to tank, while the teams around them in the standings do. That's probably going to be worth a couple of wins or so.

A Brook Lopez injury, even something relatively minor like a high ankle sprain, would be really fortunate right about now.

I keep hearing people say this but the players on the floor are not tanking for Philly or LA. They are playing and competing to win. Brooklyn, without any front office incentive, have lost 15 of their last 17 since beating us a month ago because they really really stink even with Lopez. They are playing out the season with only Phoenix providing less resistance.

http://www.nj.com/nets/index.ssf/2016/02/nba_trade_rumors_nets_discussing_brook_lopez_block.html

"For what it's worth, the rumor mill has the Nets discussing a deal with Toronto that would move star center Brook Lopez and/or power forward Thaddeus Young to the Raptors.

The Daily News reported that the Nets could get a return that includes rookie point guard Delon Wright, the 20th pick of the 2015 draft, power forward Patrick Peterson and a 2016 No. 1 draft pick that originally belonged to the New York Knicks."

Would also be good news for 2017/18, no? Think a move like that signals total rebuild mode...

Nets should make almost any trade if it can get them a lotto pick. Drawing free agents with Brook and Thad is a fantasy. That would be a great return for Thad Young, one of the league's best tank commanders 3 years running--for 3 different teams!

Of course, they don't even have a GM yet so I'm not sure they do anything before the summer and would be shocked if they moved both guys before the deadline. But if they're getting bad signals from the agents of impending FAs it would probably be smart to start switching to asset collection mode.

Basically no way to get the cap numbers to work for moving both Lopez and Thad Young to Toronto.

Yeah, sadly the numbers don't work. But maybe this means that the Nets are looking to deal both for whatever draft picks they can get as part of hitting the reset?

I read the Brook + Thad thing to be classic Trade Deadline Telephone from a non-Woj source. The Young to Toronto rumor has been out there a bit.

I wonder what their GM candidates are telling them. If they're all walking in and saying "I'd start over," they may be more inclined to hit reset than they've seemed.

We'll see. He'd be walking into a much different situation than Ferry and Presti.
I'm not saying Marks would turn the organization around with no draft picks to speak of for the next 4 years only that it's impressive how quickly he put himself into a position for a GM job. He may be better off sitting tight for another year or two for a better opportunity but of course money talks.

I dont get it, maybe Marks isnt all that bright which is odd considering his training by the Spurs. He doesnt have much of a roster to work with, and he has to realize that essentially the only first rounder he has in the 3 years is going to be the Celtics 2017 pick. He can certainly clean up their cap quickly and get them space, but he wont be signing any premier FAs. Sure he got a 4 year deal, but without those 3 first rounders he really has 3 years of complete agony ahead of him.

Job security and $. Failure isn't as lethal to a GM as never getting the shot. People in the league know it's a tough rebuild so even if he gets fired in 3 years there will be interviews waiting

I get the $, but if he is actually as well regarded as some have reported, couldnt he just wait around for another bottom dweller who actually had picks? I literally cant think of a situation where a new GM was put into a worse position to fail than this one. He is getting a 'shot' but its with both hands and one foot tied behind his back.

I mean, there's only 30 of these jobs in the entire world. I'd imagine it's really, really difficult to say no to one when it's offered.
Yeah - I don't get the idea of saying "no", unless you think you're about to be offered a better job soon, or the Spurs have told you that Buford is going to retire soon or something. Maybe you get a better job offer later, or maybe the sheen comes off you a bit, for any number of reasons.

Thumbs up on Sean Marks. Maybe Ettore Messina will follow him east as the new HC. Maybe Prok has finally gotten a clue and will try to let a real pro steer for a while.

First good news for this fanbase in a long time. I will now crawl back into my cave and silently wait 3-4 years for a new possible window of decent performance.

Lets put it this way, according to BBref, between 1990 and 2000 there were 46 GMs hired and Kupchak is the only one remaining with that team. Of the other 45 only 16 got another shot someplace else so roughly 35% Between 2001 and 2010 there were 34 guys hired, 8 are still with the team that hired them, and of the remaining 26 guys only 7 got a chance somewhere else, so 27% So there isnt zero chance, but the odds are really against you getting another shot. Personally if it was me, looking at those odds, I'd probably just wait it out a little bit more because if you think the odds are tough to get a 2nd job, I'd imagine they would be really tough if things are as much of a struggle as I think they will be for him because I think people forget about some of the circumstances these guys are in far too frequently.

Any new GM position comes with challenges. Marks is going to have a ton of money to spend over the next few years without any contracts restricting him, an owner who will pay the luxury tax if necessary, and a chance to start from scratch in NY. It's not nearly as bad a situation as you are making it sound and the bar is very very low. If he can't make a marked (pun) improvement by Year 3-4 then he wasn't going to make much of an impact anywhere else while waiting for the gig.

This is where we disagree. Philadelphia in 2013 was a chance to start from scratch, a cap that could be cleaned up and an array of picks coming in, so you really could build a young core. We know the Nets pick situation and their cap can be cleaned up, but I think the issue is going to be getting anyone of consequence to go there. LA has proven that having a big, attractive market and a check with a lot of zeros doesnt necessarily get you talent. With regards to the current roster, I dont think there is anyone of consequence who is actually going to be better in 2 years than they are right now.

Let me ask you this. Can you think of a team who couldnt win 30 games, which wasnt the results of injury, then didnt add anyone significant via the draft in the next 3 years and actually showed a marked improvement in 3 years?
