wasn't really expecting this out of Tiger given his history at Sawgrass and the layoff.  He's tearing it up

Conditions are ideal.  Low wind is making it a birdie fest for everyone.  Tiger's been sharp all year, even with layoffs.

Guess that finishes the Mt. Rushmore of mid-2000s Georgia Tech alums - Castro, Matt Wieters, Calvin Johnson, and myself.

There's seven GT golfers in the field, four of them under par.

Tiger just kicking the crap out of that course.  He didn't even putt his best today.

Man, listening to Adam Scott, that dude is peaceful as hell right now. I mean it's like he doesn't even give shit. Seems like he could go on a run to have a really special year.

Apparently this is the 7th time Tiger and Sergio have been paired together on the weekend of an event. Tiger has beaten Sergio in each of the previous 6 rounds, and he has also gone on to win the tournament all 6 times.

Took Tiger 2 holes to get the outright lead. And he hasn't even hit a good shot yet.

Edit: The bunker shot on #2 was really good.

Tiger might have to take a drop! The ball is near a drain!

Edit: Looks like he used a rules official this time.

and then hit it into an even worse spot behind the green

Any chance they get back out on course today?  Any timeframe?  Figures one of the few days I'm not playing myself on a weekend day because of rain and was all excited to watch this tournament, and they get thunderstorms.

Thanks.  Right about the time I have to get into the shower and get ready to go out for dinner.  Sigh...

I don't see how they could possibly restart. There's a much larger heavier band of rain about to go right through Jacksonville.

Sergio is a diva, and a baby, but I love his honesty.  I just saw the clip from yesterday...and he has a point.  Granted, he makes a big deal out of the smallest slights, but it was unfortunate.  I don't think Tiger meant to do it, but I don't think it bothered him that it happened.

Sergio's interview was awesome after the round.  "It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out we don't like each other"

Tiger, Sergio and Lingmerth all finish at -11.  Tension between Tiger and Sergio can be cut with a knife, most likely due to this: Sergio blames Tiger for bad shot.

Sergio's post-round interview was pretty revealing in that regard.  Talked about how he never spoke to Woods about anything, and when asked whether he should have, he snapped "Why?  I didn't do anything?"  Then asked about whether it was a good thing that he was not paired with Woods, he said "Let's face it, you don't have to be a rocket engineer to know that we don't enjoy each other's company."  (Note:  I will now adopt "rocket engineer" for that phrase for the rest of my life.)

Couple of things:
  • Garcia has a right to be annoyed if he feels that Woods plays head games with him out on the course
  • Having said that, I don't believe that Woods did this, for a number of reasons
  • Garcia is acutely aware that the issue is not whether Woods pulled a club when Garcia was in the middle of a swing.  It's that Garcia cannot handle the pressure of playing with Woods and it makes him tighter than a piano string
Garcia has a history of blaming others for his shortcomings on the golf course.  And for him to focus on something that is (1) routine, (2) not a big distraction for a professional, and (3) should be resolved with a quick word followed by a quick apology demonstrates why Garcia doesn't win majors.  He just doesn't know how to handle the pressure.

Having said all of the above, the awesomeness of Garcia's interview cannot be overstated.

Garcia has badly underperformed throughout his carer relative to his talent.  Yes, he has done well at the Player's Championship, but it's worth recalling that his victory came in a playoff with Paul Goydos and it took a Goydos collapse for it to happen.

Does not mean Garcia isn't a huge talent who is always a threat to win.  Just that Tiger's in his head.

Yeah, I love the candid comments from both. Sergio reminds me of people we all play with who back off shots due to rabbit ears. When it comes to pro golfers, they need to block stuff out. Nicklaus was the best at it. He couldn't even recognize his wife in the front row of the gallery, that's how focused he was.

NY Post's Mark Canizzaro recalls this Tiger text after he beat Garcia in final round of 2006 British Open. Sergio had dressed in yellow from head to foot for the occasion. Tiger texted to friends: "I just bludgeoned Tweety Bird."

If I was a PGA Tour golfer I would respect the hell out of Tiger and appreciate all the money he has brought to the game. I'd also absolutely hate him because he is a dick.

There are a lot of reasons for the Garcia Woods hate. Most people point to jealousy but I really think at the end of the day Woods is a complete asshole and Garcia is a finger pointing complainer.

The hate dates from a 2000 exhibition match on TV between Woods and Garcia where Sergio celebrated loudly after winning. He was 20 at the time. Tiger has disliked him ever since. Sergio was also Tiger's first challenger from the crowd of players younger than Tiger.

Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia will not be paired in the same group on Sunday during the final round of the Players Championship.
And for Garcia, he made it clear that is fine for both players.
"I'm not going to lie,'' Garcia said after completing the third round in a three-way tie for the lead with Woods and David Lingmerth. "He's not my favorite guy to play with. He's not the nicest guy on tour.''
Later, Garcia told the Golf Channel: "It's good for both of us. We don't enjoy each other's company. You don't have to be a rocket engineer to figure that out.'For Garcia, it certainly would seem to bode well from a playing standpoint. He has shot a better score just three times in the 20 occasions they have played together on the PGA Tour, and is now 0-7 on weekends.
Replays showed the noise occurred while Garcia was standing over his ball, not in his backswing. And Woods was surrounded by spectators and could not see Garcia; it is also unlikely he would expect cheering simply because he took a club out of his bag.
Woods was unaware that there was an issue until he heard of Garcia's comments during the weather delay. They did not speak about it, he said.
"There wasn't a whole lot of conversation between us,'' he said.

Absolutely one of the best posts on this board ever.  Dead solid perfect summary of both players

Is Tiger really hitting that five wood 270?

We might see him hit one or two drivers the entire day.

I love this course so much.  Every shot is interesting, and Stenson play of #4 was the perfect example.  In the trees off the tee, chip out in the fairway but it rolls past and then an extra 40 yards down a cart paths where it rolls over and then back onto a bridge over a hazard.  Instead of dropping he hits off the wood because, hey, there aren't any trees in the way, and he puts it 6 feet from the hole putting for a miraculous par.

And of course, he misses the putt.

I think other than Augusta this is my favorite course on tour.

Edit: Speaking of which, I got to play a Pete Dye course when i was living in Vegas (Paiute).  It was the day after Christmas and it was cold as hell and windy as crap, and I thought my fingers were going to fall off.  And it was the most enjoyable round of my life.

Even better, he also missed the 2 1/2 foot comeback putt.  Double bogey 6

Maggert might be the only player to challenge Tiger on the back nine.

Seems that way.  Sure looks like the final group has basically pissed their pants and can't wait to get off the course.   Actually pretty shocking Garcia is only +1 on the day, because it really feels like he has about a 78-80 round going on

It's Tiger's fault.  The crowds from the group ahead have been distracting him all day.

That pretty much nails it. But seriously, Sergio is such a baby.
