Terrible game for most of it, but they gutted it out at the end without Tatum and Porizingis. Offensive execution down the stretch was actually quite good.
The luxury of having White and Jrue..who usually seem to never be out of control and usually make the right play..while also having PP is kind of nice. End of games are less chaotic and bit less stressful typically.

and get out after a few years.
I really wanted Larry Legend to win a title as a coach, even if it meant that the loathsome Reggie Miller would have gotten one too. Larry got them to the ECF three out of three years, losing the Finals his final season. Indy handing that team off to Isiah Thomas was criminal.

I wish Bill Russell and Tommy were still alive so they could explain to the Jays how true superstars can save wear and tear during the season and build camaraderie by letting the rest of a crazy talented roster thrive. There is almost no reason for either Jay to go into their bag when they’re out there with the stars. All those ridiculous turnovers in this game were from them, stepping out of the team offensive structure, and just trying to make plays when they just could move the ball and make plays

If this were the 1980s, the Derrick White caricature t-shirts would be top sellers at Herman’s. And Needham Sporting Goods. And Miner’s Sports in Medfield.
I grew up in Needham.. had the Celtics t-shirt when I think it was Dee Brown, Kevin Gamble and Brian Shaw? Also, had a Jordan.. wore those shirts til they fell apart.
I also used to draw caricatures and sell them across the street at the baseball card store there. Both are gone now sadly... will have to try and see if my caricature skills are still ok... seems like one of DW would be better with last years hair.

I’m never going to be objective about Joe Mazzulla, since he’s my friend’s son and was the protege of another friend who I used to train, but he stepped into a very messy situation last season. I think he has shown improvement. Most of this season, crunch time has gone in the Celtics’ favor, with Minny and Charlotte as outliers.

The Celtics brain trust are not idiots. They obviously see something in this young coach to keep him on with the tremendous squad they put together. Playing Horford and Kornet (with Tatum disqualified) to counter Reed and Bamba certainly wasn’t coaching malpractice, especially the way Philly was hitting the offensive glass. Almost every rebound the Celtics got in the fourth quarter was some kind of crazy tip drill
I think he has been fantastic. We can quibble with situational substitutions, time out usage, and not yelling at the refs with enough frequency or intensity which is what I think a lot of the game thread noise is but you can’t argue with his W-L results. How much of that is a result of a supremely talented roster vs his coaching and team leadership is unknowable anfnot that interesting to me. He is doing what he is supposed to do.

He is the head coach of the best team in the league that can light it up on offense and clamp down on defense with the league’s best net rating despite the NBA’s 2nd most difficult strength of schedule. He is doing a lot of things right.

A quarter of the way through the season he has been tremendously successful. Hope he and the team keep it up because it would make me really happy to see him and the team get a championship.

I would love to hear more about your personal connection to Mazzulla.

I saw very little of tonight's game as I noted upthread, but I did watch the last couple minutes. That defensive sequence that ended with Jrue drawing a charge on someone (Beverly?) was just an epic display of one-man defense. I'm pretty sure that Jrue switched onto almost every Sixer at some point, before drawing the foul. And more impressively, it certainly looked to me as though he called every one of those switches himself.

It was Covington.
~6:30 into this video (for those who can access it); roughly 1:30 to go in the 4th quarter.

Thank goodness Tobias Harris was MIA for the final three quarters. What a dogshit performance from a guy on a max deal.
