Pardon me for being late with this question, but why did Papelbon pitch last night with a five run lead, making him unavailable tonight? I missed the last inning so I'm just going by the box score.

He started warming up in the 8th, when it was still 13-11. Once warm, we got the last 3 runs, so it wasn't going to be a day of rest for him either way.

If it weren't a Yankees game I would have shut this game off by now. Holy fuck. Miller, Phillips and Morgan have not shut up.

He was warming up in the Bottom of the 8th and the score was 13-11 with 2 outs in the Bot of the 8th.

You know, I haven't minded Joe Morgan too much tonight - I thought he did a good job talking about the Red Sox' analysis of Pedroia that led to them drafting him, talking about the art of base stealing and so on... and I think Jon Miller is definitely the best play-by-play baseball guy that ESPN has on the payroll. Listen to (say) Miller's introduction to the lineup back in the first inning, he has very quick and incisive facts about each player, phrased eloquently, delivered efficiently... and what clearly required some research to put together. Was it an OMGWOW kind of moment? No, but it was better than 'merely competent', which is what we all wish Joe Buck and Tim McIgnoramus would achieve.

Steve Phillips is still a moron though.

One of the highlights of the WBC championship game was Miller reading the lineup for Korea and akwardly speeding through the name 'Bum Ho'. Thinking about still puts a smile on my face.

Ellsbury is having a fantastic weekend.

I hope it gives him confidence for the next month or even the rest of the year.

They had already started warming up Papelbon when it was 12-10 or 12-11 (top of the eighth inning). Since he'd thrown a lot of pitches on Friday, I think Tito decided that he wouldn't get Papelbon up tonight for the third day in a row, so he might as well use him (last night).

You conveniently omit the fact that the basepaths are 20% shorter for Canadian players.

Yes they are shorter, but much more slippery.

Because a 5-run lead in a 16-11 game is like a save situation in a 3-2 game (when cubically transformed).

I'm still trying to figure out why more rival GM's didn't take complete and total advantage of Phillips during his Mets tenure. He's more of an imbecile than Dan Quayle.

I have to concede this - the comment re. pitch stress and counts was a good one by Joe.

Hey, gotta make myself feel good about him somehow.

EDIT - It is so sad Varitek, Ellsbury and Green have home runs before Ortiz.
