One of my favorite collegiate front seven defenders ever. So happy I can root for him now professionally

Athletic freak

I think he can be 95% of Chandler

Here's an interesting note:
Pats won't have a 5th in 2017 (barring further trade, traded for Mingo).
Pats didn't have a 5th in 2016 (traded for Keshawn Martin)
Pats traded out of 5th in 2015 (for Jonathan Casillas), got another 5th in trade, traded back in the 5th round and took a LS
Pats didn't have a 5th in 2014 (traded for Isaac Sopoaga)
Pats didn't have a 5th in 2013 (traded for Albert Haynesworth)
Pats didn't have a 5th in 2012 (traded for Chad Johnson / Ochocinco)

It seems to me like they think the value is poor in the fifth round and they can get guys they like just as much in the 6th / 7th / UDFA.

Wow - they must really dislike round five, because that is a list of acquisitions that has a serious impact deficiency.

The one pick they made panned out, though

Casillas, Martin and Johnson easily meet or even exceeded what you would reasonable expect to get out of a 5th round pick when they played. I'll give you Haynesworth and Sopoaga, but the other guys provided reasonable contributions vs. what you could expect from a player drafted in that spot.

But knowing the Pats they are going to throw us all for a loop and trade into the 5th round three times in the next draft.

Or, the value league-wide of "marginal / depth player" is a 5th rounder. Some of those names are bigger than the others but they've all proven to be pretty much replacement level talent.

His contract is fully guaranteed (he was the #6 pick in the draft) so when its due is fairly irrelevant, as he is going to get it whether or not he is on the roster.
I meant more in the "Has it already been paid" sense - I should have been clearer.

Still, its not much money either way.

With the Belichick bonus we can probably get to 110% of Gholston.

Gholston barely saw the field and didn't record an NFL sack. He may or may not improve but Mingo is already far, far better.

Looked like he was playing LA-Lafayette out there. Better than Gholston

So excited to hopefully see him in games that count

Looked great as a situational nickel LB. Don't think we want him rushing much in base packages or setting the edge against the run because OL can simply maul him but if you can get him on a RB or TE he should win those battles.
Unique build, long, lean, and light but fast as hell.

During the season we frequent a couple of bars that have tons of Browns fans. I will torment these people endlessly if this kid has a productive season as a situational player.

Browns fans have suffered enough.

"He's shown a lot of commitment to try to pick up the new information and try to understand what we're doing, watching the films of games we played to understand the techniques and how we're playing things and all that," Belichick continued. "He worked really hard, took a lot of plays in practice to get somewhat comfortable with what we're doing. It's obviously going to be a work in progress here, it's only been a week, but he's smart, he learns well, and he works hard. So check all those boxes."

Yep. Belichick was initially a bit dismissive of questions about how Mingo looked, giving a generic "I'll need to look at the film" response. But when reporters kept coming back to it, he opened up a bit more. Seems like part of a pattern with BB to speak more extensively about a player's effort—film he's watched, time he's spent with the playbook, etc.—rather than the results. On that score, Mingo seems to have done pretty well in his first week.

What I'm finding interesting is maybe the end game is for him to take over Sheards role last year while Jabal goes into the Chandler role. Either way if he can keep weight on then Mingo on this front 7 is crazy good.

Thought he played exclusively at LB last night? Don't think he can play the Sheard role since he can't set the edge. As a situational pass rusher perhaps he can play with his hand on the ground but I see him as more Jamie Collins backup/Nickel LB alongside JC than much time on the line or traditional 3-4 OLB.

Let him cover TE/RB's and occasionally rush the passer. He isn't going to hold up a T/G at the point of attack.

I think his edge-setting ability is not as bad as people think. He stuffed the left tackle and brought down the running back for a loss on one play. I saw the clip of the play in the attached tweet from Rich Hill on Twitter - "Mingo Is Nightmare!" Giants Outcry.
