Weird. I was half expecting this before the Long and McClellan signings but at this point it's a little confusing.

Edit: perhaps it's a player for player trade

Yes, they do. They now have the 6th and 7th picks from the 2013 NFL draft, which is looking like 1 of the worst first rounds in recent history. But still, can't teach talent, or whatever. I love taking a flyer on guys like this.

With the Ninkovich and Sheard injuries they were probably looking around the league for pass rush help.
Yeah, maybe Nink goes on IR now? Otherwise I don't know who they cut. A LB I guess? I should really wait for the details.

I'm pretty sure they don't--there's like a may cut-off for picking upt he fifth year option and the browns didn't pick up Mingo's.

Mike Lombardi drafted Mingo, right? I imagine Belichick has pretty good info. That said, this seems like a buy-low/kick-the-tires kind of trade. I wouldn't think Mingo is a lock to make the roster.

The Cleveland Browns are trading linebacker Barkevious Mingo, a former first-round pick, to the New England Patriots, a source said.

Mingo was the sixth overall pick in the 2013 draft and has seven sacks in three seasons.

The Browns did not pick up his fifth-year option and he was scheduled to become a free agent after this season.

The Patriots are hoping he will provide some additional pass rush.

Mingo was drafted by the Browns when Mike Lombardi was general manager. Lombardi spent the 2014 and 2015 seasons as an assistant to the Patriots coaching staff and remains a confidant to Bill Belichick.

So what exactly is Jonathan Cooper's status?

Adam Schefter wrote an entire article with "details" of the deal for ESPN. There were no details at all including what the return was.
Such a classic ESPN clickbait move.

Probably David Andrews.

One note on Mingo: he played 85% of Cleveland's special teams snaps last year. So even if he's not ready to carve out a role on D, he can still stick as a back-of-roster player with his contributions there.
Any sense on whether he was any good on teams? With his size and speed you'd think there's a chance.

No idea. He had four assisted tackles and two solo tackles on special teams, which isn't impressive, but that doesn't necessarily convey anything really. As a whole, Cleveland was eight-worst in punt returns against and eighth-best in kick returns against, which again doesn't really say anything.

He was a hell of a player at LSU, although some of their top players over the years haven't really blown away the NFL (Tyson Jackson, Glenn Dorsey, Ricky Jean-Francois). I can believe that someone playing for CLE and a bunch of different coaches probably didn't reach their potential as a player, and BB has a pretty good success rate when it comes to SEC linebackers who were good college players.

Talent like his can't be taught. If BB and Patricia can't harness him and get something out of him then nobody will.
Yup, and if you can count on a team to misuse a player, its the Browns.

Could end up nothing, but he's got way more of a chance of turning into an asset than a normal 5th rounder. And that name...

Anybody know when that 2M roster bonus is due? Salary is 675K

His contract is fully guaranteed (he was the #6 pick in the draft) so when its due is fairly irrelevant, as he is going to get it whether or not he is on the roster.
