Also can we stop the “he did nothing” line because they didn’t make a move TODAY? They got rid of Kiké and added a couple arms. Maybe Wong comes in.
Yup, my bad quoting the incorrect Tweet earlier.MLB Network just said E-Rod had already been offered a QO so he can’t be offered one again, meaning DET ain’t gettin squat.
And what if they don't? Counting on a miracle where guys come back from significant injuries and are in top form is a losing bet.Or both are wrong and they make the playoffs anyway with guys getting healthy and not spending a dime in prospect capital.
Not really. what’s available and what it costs is incredibly important.Do you think this team has a chance to win a title? If so, then you buy. If not, then you sell. Simple as that.
Or, and bear with me here, he thinks that a team that is soon to add 2-4 solid MLB players for free, and is only 2 games out of a playoff spot, has a pretty good chance at the playoffs without giving up future assets.Doing nothing should not have been an option. If Bloom didn't think this team can make the playoffs, trade Paxton and Duvall and see what you can get. If he believed in the team, he needed to add. Not adding while others did makes the Sox worse and we have nothing to show for it.
Baltimore not getting Cease is a trade deadline win for the Red Sox.
Guys who are literally playing baseball tonight? But it’ll be a miracle if they continue playing baseball? And what if they don't? Counting on a miracle where guys come back from significant injuries and are in top form is a losing bet.
Yeah. The Mets deals for Scherzer and Verlander were really wacked to begin with. Scherzer had his chance last year to win against the Braves to get a first round bye and the NL east title and he whiffed.Verlander is also under contract & heavily financially subsidized for the next year or two.
Really? Dumping Kike may be addition by subtraction, but they were going to release him anyway. The roster crunch was pretty obvious and he got two arms that weren't brought to the majors. He also got Llovera. How did that work in SF?Also can we stop the “he did nothing” line because they didn’t make a move TODAY? They got rid of Kiké and added a couple arms. Maybe Wong comes in.
White Sox are a shitshow. They were willing to trade everything but the pieces that people would actually want.Baltimore not getting Cease is a trade deadline win for the Red Sox.
All I know is that neither the Splendid Splinter, Yaz, or Tony C. are walking through that door.Does anyone really expect players to come out and name the guys that they think need to be replaced?
That's twice today. Time for a vacation.Peace out, assholes!
And where they fit into the current roster. Someone has to go. You can't just add a 10th hitter to the lineup. Not really. what’s available and what it costs is incredibly important.
I love that people are hanging their hat on a literal interpretation of "doing nothing". Solid point to argue.Really? Dumping Kike may be addition by subtraction, but they were going to release him anyway. The roster crunch was pretty obvious and he got two arms that weren't brought to the majors. He also got Llovera. How did that work in SF?
Sale is broken waiting to happen. Whitlock was only great when he was handled with kid gloves in his first year with the Sox. Feel free to continue to defend Bloom, but counting on guys that haven't been there all year, can't stay on the field, or get lit the third time through the order isn't having a bunch of all stars coming to save the day.Guys who are literally playing baseball tonight? But it’ll be a miracle if they continue playing baseball?
You've got a pretty good team here. One that nobody would want to face in the playoffs. The window is opening. Trading a bunch of prospects may make it more likely to win this year while shortening the window. Trading for a bunch of prospects may make it less likely to win this year while lengthening the window. Not doing other means you have a decent chance of having a fun postseason run while not fucking with the window.Yeah, I really don't get the plan here. At all.
We can revisit if it’s a losing bet in a couple months. Kyle Schwarber hadn’t played for a month when we acquired him in 2021. Guys can and do recover from injury. And what if they don't? Counting on a miracle where guys come back from significant injuries and are in top form is a losing bet.
Give Manfred timeAnd where they fit into the current roster. Someone has to go. You can't just add a 10th hitter to the lineup.
it’s been reported by numerous sources (Ken Rosenthal being one) that the Sox could have got a premium return for Paxton. One is not under contract past a handful more starts, so no, they don’t have similar value at all.

It's so easy to understand no one was arguing for this approach before it happened. You've got a pretty good team here. One that nobody would want to face in the playoffs. The window is opening. It's really not hard to understand. Things are going pretty well. Staying the course is not a bad option.
Seriously? Llovera pitched two shutout innings on Saturday. He was out there again on Sunday simply because there was no one else available. Leaving a ton of men on base was the bigger cause for that loss, yes?Really? Dumping Kike may be addition by subtraction, but they were going to release him anyway. The roster crunch was pretty obvious and he got two arms that weren't brought to the majors. He also got Llovera. How did that work in SF?
If we make it to October, I like “don’t fuck with the window” as our postseason slogan a la “do damage” in 2018.You've got a pretty good team here. One that nobody would want to face in the playoffs. The window is opening. Trading a bunch of prospects may make it more likely to win this year while shortening the window. Trading for a bunch of prospects may make it less likely to win this year while lengthening the window. Do you have any Intel on offers that he's made or offers that have been extended to him?He is only great at half of his job. He has helped rebuild the farm system, but this team has a chance to win and nothing is happening. Future success is never guaranteed, but Bloom acts like all of the prospects will be great and he can build a winner on the cheap with prospects and cast offs.
Sounds complicated to try to get a premium for one player only to turn around and trade a premium for a new player.it’s been reported by numerous sources (Ken Rosenthal being one) that the Sox could have got a premium return for Paxton.
Chaim chose to keep him. I’m not arguing whether that’s right or wrong but they could have got a large return for Paxton (my guess is that it would have been incredibly similar to Verlander)
Exact quote from Rosenthal “ "The big question revolves around James Paxton, they could get a premium package in return, but the Red Sox would need to replace him somehow."

Tom Verducci just said the Sox don’t need to do anything About 30 mins ago. For all the reasons stated in this thread. It's so easy to understand no one was arguing for this approach before it happened.
Absolutely, and there would be a lot of moving pieces…but your original point was that Verlander had way more value than Paxton because of control no? I am simply pointing out that with the information available to us that that is incorrectSounds complicated to try to get a premium for one player only to turn around and trade a premium for a new player.

(will find out after the break)
I've been saying it's a reasonable option for a couple weeks. It's so easy to understand no one was arguing for this approach before it happened.
AMAZING!!!! Oh wait.. who?
I change my mind. I prefer nothing.
We think the Sox can catch the O’s?Baltimore not getting Cease is a trade deadline win for the Red Sox.
We can only speak to what actually happened rather than media reports. We’ve also seen rental starters go for guys deeper on prospect lists. Paxton has been great so probably it would be somewhere in between that and the Verlander haul.Absolutely, and there would be a lot of moving pieces…but your original point was that Verlander had way more value than Paxton because of control no? I am simply pointing out that with the information available to us that that is incorrect
Right. But that never stops the “just do something” crowd from screaming because they are bored.I've been saying it's a reasonable option for a couple weeks.
The thing is, there's reasonable arguments to be made for all of the arguments and the only way to know which is the best is to know the details of specific offers and we don't know the details.
Story?Shocked they didn’t get someone for second base. It is the gaping hole and there is no help coming from the injured guys.
