It does save more time if they stop them. A first down and it's over anyway.
Detroit just knocked off 6-3 Carolina, and Jacksonville is hanging tough against 6-2-1 Pittsburgh (and should have won the game already).
NFL is hard.
This, and the fact that Theismann is actually AT the game, makes this downright creepy.
The new rules fucking gutted onside kicks.
Probably an unintentional consequence, but I don't see them doing anything about it.
It also gutted kick returns.
Except if you play against the Pats, and Belichick thinks he's smarter than the rules.
I'd be laying about 10:1 odds that the Jaguars not only blow this game, but they blow it regulation. No field goal for Pitt. They'll score a touchdown.
Interesting situation for Washington here, 4th-and-10 with :08 left, no TOs, 2 down, currently 63-yd FG. Maybe just barely enough time to fake deep and go to the sidelines for 10 yards?
The only chance the Jags had was to let Pittsburgh score on the very first play after the punt, and give themselves as much time as possible to come back down and score.
All of this other shit has accomplished nothing more than keeping the clock running for Pittsburgh.
