And Vinatieri was held on Howard's return. See at 20 seconds in in this video. Pisses me off to this day that wasn't flagged.
I read Troy Brown's new book (hat tip to Mike Reiss) and one thing I learned is that the guy who blew his lane on the Howard kick return was Troy's replacement since he was out hurt for the game. Says it still haunts him to this day because he knows he would have made that tackle and not blown his spot, and who knows what would have happened. Interesting fact I never knew.

True. But as I'm sure you can't avoid thinking about your avatar not getting jobbed by the refs, I can't help but wonder what a dialed-in Parcells (& coaching staff...remember, they kinda knew and had to alter the prep routine) could have done.

Had that happened, the Tuck Rule game probably never happens. Parcells fucked you, too. ;-)
True, but forgetting Reggie White's all time great performance toward the end of that game is like leaving out the fact that the Raiders couldn't convert a 3rd-1 that wins the game or got taken to overtime by the no question greatest clutch kick of all time in that game.

Wait, I leave those two facts out all the time. Bob Kraft has pictures of Walt Coleman naked with an underage orangutang!!

Point granted.

No one's forgotten Reggie's performance, least of all Max Lane, who probably still wakes up in cold sweats remembering Reggie's shoving him around.

The entire game is on YouTube for those interested. Lane got NO help with Reggie in the second half of the game. How 'bout keeping in a TE or RB to chip him, eh Tuna? Oh wait, I'm sorry, I interrupted your call with the Jets. I'll come back later.

27-21 with 3 minutes left in the 3rd. I say it again, that was a winnable game.

At 27-21 you had to feel it was a winnable game. Favre had largely cleaned up his gunslinger act in '96, but is there really any doubt that if it was a close game in the 4th that he wouldn't have tried to force one in?

Definitely. The thing with that game was that Favre was only 14 of 27 for 246 yards, he really didn't throw all that much. He wasn't forcing the ball to that point in the game. Would he have in the 4th had the game been close? Who knows?

Now Howard's TD return took away a possession, of course, and the Packers ran the ball a lot too (36 rushing attempts), but the Pats' D played pretty damn well all things considered. The Packers only got 115 yards on those 36 rushing attempts, and Favre was sacked 5 times. Talk talk talk about Reggie all you like, but while the Pats had to punt 8 times in the game, the Packers were forced to punt 7.

Is @Smiling Joe Hesketh ok?

Rex creating a "Where is Rex?" story in the NFL Network pregame by not coming out on the field, then sending an assistant coach to tell the sideline reporter "Rex doesn't want this be about him," is the kind of thing that might give him an aneurysm.

I'm struck by how long ago the mid nineties were.
I was actually struck by how relatively 'modern' the broadcast quality seems (when I watched the full game on youtube). You get a roughly similar viewing experience as today in terms of replays, camera cuts, pacing etc. Compare this to broadcasts from the mid-80s, where it feels like television had just been invented and it feels semi-miraculous that anybody could have maintained interest all the way through a random ho-hum game.

My shitty cable company recently removed NFL Network from my sub package, so I didn't see the game last night. So I missed all of this. But that's a perfect summary of the Sexy Rexy experience. What a piece of narcissistic shit he is.

Maybe this is me "misremembering" the NFL from the 80s, but we always seemed to get West Coast games as the 4 p.m. game on Sunday's. The 1 p.m. game was the local game and then it was the Chargers, Raiders or 49ers. There wasn't the scheduling we have today which tries to place interesting/competitive games in the 4:25 time slot. In addition to the the upgrades in technology which dramatically changed the game visually, the reimagining of the scheduling is the biggest improvement for me.

Yeah this was even true in the early-mid 90s to my recollection. Lots of Raiders games.

Last night was tough to watch as a Pats fan. I wanted the Jets to lose (as always), so the result was good. But seeing Sexy Rexy pumping his fists and dancing around at the end was rather unwanted, and is not an image I can immediately expel.

The notion that he did ANYTHING to make it less about him is up there with just about everything we hear from Roger Goodell. Pure unadulterated garbage.

“It’s pretty satisfying,” Ryan said of Thursday night’s victory. “Without question. And, you know what? Now I can talk the truth and say the truth. I look at it this way: It’s kind of like being dumped by some girl that you had the hots for and all that stuff. Every guy in this room has been dumped by some girl before. That’s really what it feels like. Hey, you move on and every now and then, they call you back.

“But they can’t get you back.”

But again, to be clear, Rex didn't want last night to be about him.

I'm totally fine with the result and even the fist pumping for two reasons. One, no matter how I felt about the fist pumping it bothered Jets fans about a million times more. Two, Rex getting all satisfied with himself after a win like that bodes exceedingly well for the Pats a week from Sunday.

Major amen on the second point. Rex teams NEVER handle prosperity well.

And yeah, I had not thought about how annoying the fist pumping would be for Jets fans. Good stuff. I'd rather not see it myself but net net, I guess I'll take it.

Checks being written that cannot be cashed. Even banged up, Pats would have killed them last night on a neutral field

Rex is crazy, but not that crazy.

Mike Rodak ‏@mikerodak 2h2 hours ago
Rex Ryan: “We had everyone healthy against New England and we got waxed. So we know what’s ahead of us."

FWIW, I don't think his comment on the wind was anything more than saying that a pass-first offense would have a hard time in extremely windy conditions, which I think logic dictates.

Must say it was surreal listening to Ryan go off on the New England media when he was the one talking about the Patriots during Jets week
Mike Petraglia ‏@Trags 7m7 minutes ago
Rex is genuinely pissed at the media.

Michael Giardi ‏@MikeGiardi 7m7 minutes ago
"We got no business being on the field with them...so don't talk to me. You guys have all the answers." Rex Ryan annoyed with line of ????s

Mark Daniels ‏@MarkDanielsPJ 8m8 minutes ago
Rex said we're saying that "You've got no business being on the same field" so he's unhappy.

Mark Daniels ‏@MarkDanielsPJ 9m9 minutes ago
Rex is saying we spin his words.

Mike Petraglia ‏@Trags 9m9 minutes ago
Rex: "I know you guys always say I'm obsessed with them. You're obsessed with them. Not me. You talk about them every day."

Phil Perry ‏@PhilAPerry 9m9 minutes ago
Rex getting a little chippy: "I obviously have no clue how to attack them or defend them so you should talk to someone else."

Mike Petraglia ‏@Trags 10m10 minutes ago
"The only reason I talk about them is they're the best." Rex

IMO, that may be the only way to talk about that person. He is as sickly egotistical as any person on the planet.

Personally I enjoyed this part

"Of course they want to bury me," Ryan said Thursday. "No question they want to beat me. But this is nothing to do with me, it's something to do with our team. Yeah, they want to put us away, there's no question. When you look at it from their perspective, right now we're second in the division, so of course they're gonna try to do whatever they can.
Yeah, Rex, like they give one iota about beating you personally. They could give a shit. But it's not about you! They also don't give a shit about "burying" the Bills. He is saying that because it implies that the Pats would be scared to play them in the playoffs so they want to eliminate the Bills. Again, propping himself up.

The Pats care about this game because it is a division game and one step closer to a division title / bye / HFA / Lombardi. Period.

I'm hoping the WCs are Buffalo and Oakland and the Jets and Steelers are at the beach.
