Jason Varitek, Tim Wakefield, Ira Flagstead and Larry Lucchino will comprise the 2016 class of the Red Sox Hall of Fame.

The honorees, selected by a 14-person panel and revealed today by the team, will be inducted May 19 at the Sheraton Boston Hotel and celebrated the following day in a pregame ceremony at Fenway Park. The Sox induct new members to their Hall of Fame every other year.

Geez, not even @redsoxstiff saw that guy play. And after reading his wikipedia page, I have no idea why he was waived at the end of 1928, when it seems he had a decent/good season.

I hope they aren't planning to embarrass Varitek by making him attempt to catch Wakefield again.

Ira Flagstaff's Baseball Reference page: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/flagsir01.shtml
In his 6 years with the Red Sox (1923-28) he averaged 2.4 BWAR (for what it's worth). Five of those six years he received downballot MVP votes, finishing as high as 7th in 1925 in what statistically looks like his worst year with the Sox. As the Wikipedia page notes, he was considered an excellent outfielder, leading the league in assists a couple of times (a 1920s JBJ?).
As for the befuddlement... I get that. My supposition is that he was the best representative of an era. Those were lean years for the Sox - 5 of the 6 years they finished last in the eight-team AL; the other year they were seventh. So, best guy on some bad teams?

Is Ira their Machiavellian way of softening us up for Boggs.

It's supposed to be the Hall of FAME. Not the Hall of Extremely-Obscure-But-Surprisingly-Good.

Just saw NESN's coverage of this. Some great stuff from Papi and Pedro with a touching moment crediting Varitek with being essential to his success in Boston.

Worth noting, Lucchino looked absolutely terrible. After all the conspiracy theories about why he was moved out, hope it's not the case but it's hard not to think his health was the biggest reason.
