Geoff Cameron stops by to mutilate (again) the corpse of Bruce Arena and the arrogane of US Soccer powers-that-be, and I love him for it.

Why is it seen as a negative for America to “lose” a player who goes to play abroad? Brazilians don’t think this way when Neymar goes to Barcelona. The Dutch don’t think this way when their Ajax academy kids go to Chelsea or Bayern. Why don’t we go the other way entirely? U.S. Soccer should take out ads with pictures of all the players, past and present, who have made a huge impact on the world stage.
But this is the mentality that is so toxic across the board in youth soccer in America. It’s not about proving yourself every day. It’s about what you did last year. It’s about who you know. It’s about your size. It’s about your reputation. It’s about what fancy youth club you play for.

"If you want to see what’s wrong with U.S. Soccer in a single image, just go out to one of these fancy suburbs some weekend and spot the coaches of the fancy club teams strutting on the sidelines. Half of them are carrying themselves like they’re Pep Guardiola."

YYYYYYYYUP
Oh yes. My son played for one of those clubs and his coach was awesome, but we saw it all the time at tourneys. My daughter plays for a very small travel club and when we go play those bigger clubs it's sad/hilarious to watch these guys (and ladies) on the sideline.

Reading between the lines on the twitters of soccer journalists sounds like everyone thinks it's Carter with a chance or Cordeiro. Disappointing but not surprising. MLS/NWSL/SUM/USSF relationship is the legal US version of the corruption that the rest of the region's federations practice.

The math in this article sure makes it seem like Carter will win.

MLS+USL+NWSL are nearly 25% of the vote on their own. She'll pick up votes from among the many state adult and youth associations, plus a bunch of the miscellaneous voters (board of directors, life members, etc), and possibly some or all of the Athletes' Council. The only way she doesn't win is if the Athletes' Council votes against her en masse and support coalesces around one of the other candidates. That seems unlikely.

Do we know that USSF is selling SUM the rights to US games for below market prices? That's really the only aspect of the SUM relationship that is potentially corrupt. For me, the bigger issue with Carter is less potential corruption (in any legal sense) and more the unlikelihood that she'll rock the boat where it's needed.

It isn't corrupt, hence why I said legal, but..... MLS and SUM hold board positions, they gave SUM a very long term no-bid contract, the details of which have never been released. All rights are bundled, which doesn't make all that much sense. There has never been an explanation for why.

Generally it sure seems like if there is a strong belief by the current board (not surprising with Gulati and Garber among others) that anything that is good for MLS profits is good for soccer in America, and anything that is bad for MLS profits is not good.

It isn't corruption per say, it is a system built to serve the interests of a small number of people who got in on the ground floor, and exclude everyone else. It also involves an insane number of conflicts of interest that no well run non-profit would ever allow. The idea that the bulk of the revenue and expenditures of a non-profit flowed through the private for profit entities owned or managed by board members is insane.

I guess I was thinking of Facebook:
“Thanks Cam, straight forward as always!!!
It was a lot of fun seeing you coming through MLS and then jumping overseas to play Premier League ! You've done it the right way! Keep fighting!”

God Sunil, just shut up and let's get on with it.

Listening to him talk about the WCQ failure and trying to defend himself generally is so cringe-worthy.

Down to a 2 person race probably.

Athlete's council voting as a bloc for Cordeiro. Maybe as a way to ensure Carter doesn't win, but will be interesting if that catapults him to an easy win, or if it sets off rounds of bargaining in which a 3rd candidate can slide in.
