Here's a trade idea that won't happen for many, many ,reasons but strikes me as an interesting package/thought exercise simply because it's the Marlins and they like to blow things up very unpredictably. Repeat: The Red Sox would likely never entertain/propose such an offer given the health questions marks around Stanton and Fernandez and the vast potential of Betts and Moncada.
Sox- Betts, Moncada, Johnson, Owens , Devers
Marlins - Fernandez, Stanton.
Betts provides a ML proven ,cheaper ,very valuable OF that can play CF or RF. Moncada cuban phenom two years away. Johnson and Owens controllable lefties with some upside in a pitchers park and Devers another high upside bat that could make the 2018 Marlins scary as hell.
The Sox do it because Fernandez showed that he recovered well from TJ last year and he's the bona fide young controlled ace they've been looking for. That ceiling is potential enough to give up guys like Owens and Johnson who project to be probably mid rotation guys. Now the response to those average projections from the Marlins may be " So why do I accept this deal ?"
The answer lies in the magnitude of the offensive talent coming back the other way. Stanton is of course an MVP candidate if he plays 145 games, but due to a series of injuries that hasn't happened consistently. Betts was outstanding this year and might reach the Cutch comparison in the most rosy of scenarios. Add, Moncada , widely considered to be a top 2 type talent from last year and Devers and the future cheaply controlled offense of the Marlins might be enough to sell to an outraged fan base.
Again the ridiculous potential of Betts, Moncada, and Devers combined with the injury question marks to Fernandez and ,especially Stanton, make the worst case scenario of this deal potentially very ,vey ,painful for the Sox. However, if those two do stay healthy you have the elite middle of the order bat to fill Ortiz's shoes and a front of the rotation stud to lead the rotation. Further, you'd still have Benintendi Espinoza Travis Kopech Chavis on the farm.
