As the Football Central project grows, we have found it useful to create a single list of all the pieces and links that we've run. Given that we have it, I thought it could be similarly potentially useful and engaging to make it publicly available.
Some of this speaks to the fact that I am a huge nerd, and community and discourse and how they promote one another are sort of my thing. Citations are important. Sourcing is important. Records are important. Everyone learns in school now how you're not supposed to plagiarize, but we're fed such a primitive model of how it's bad because it's stealing other people's ideas. There's that, but so much more.
We should embrace why we are supposed to keep track of sources. Basically, it's the scaffolding of our civilization. Sources and records thereof are how we look stuff to learn more about a subject. It's how we are able to check to see if an idea is valid and what the authorities behind it are. It's the technology through which we pull together good ideas and synthesize new understandings.
Think of this: Humans haven't gotten any smarter in the last 40,000 years (if the evolutionary biologists are to be believed, anyway). We spent the first 35,000 years of it throwing rocks and sticks at one another and trying to nail down fire. Then writing was developed. In the next 5,000 years, we made it to the frickin' moon. And brought a car. And played golf there.
This is why we fastidiously link to other sources in our pieces--both here and elsewhere on the net. So we wanted to make it easier for us to find the links to what we've done. And hey, if any of you out there feel like linking to our stuff on another site in the comments or what have you--well, much obliged. (Seriously, we would be honored and, more importantly, psyched.) Sure, football may not be important, but neither is intragalactic golf. But one way or another, it just makes sense to have the record and there's no reason not to make everything easier for everyone, yeah?
We hope you continue to enjoy the work of SoSH Football Central and maybe this can help you enjoy it even more.
