Tackling Solder

Only four games into the 2014 campaign and there’s already been a lot of talk about what has happened to left tackle Nate Solder. The Patriots’ offensive line has not looked strong in general and Solder appears to be a big part of the problem. Was Dante Scarnecchia such an excellent coach that he managed to coach up a marginal player to excellence and, without him, Solder is now lost? Why has Solder seemed so out of synch through New England’s first four games? Are we all just overreacting to the fact that he’s the left tackle and Tom Brady is seeing a lot of pressure? To answer this, we reviewed every pass play this season to see what was going on.

Awesome (if very depressing) article. Its amazing that Solder didn't get Brady killed in those first four games.

I'm no o-line expert but Solder's footwork looks totally screwed up to me, which is especially problematic since footwork and athleticism were always supposed to be his strengths. He never seems to have a solid base established by the time he makes first contact with the rusher - his body is still moving back while the guy is spinning inside or his body is in the right place but his feet aren't wide enough to anchor him yet. I don't know whether its a coaching/technique problem or a physical issue that's sapping his quickness but he just looks awful.

Really well researched, esp going back and looking at other LT's that DG has had.  I do wonder though if those LT's also started with a wider base and then narrowed it or already had a narrow stance before DG got to them.

You can say the narrow stance worked for them but we also know the wide stance worked well for Solder and he was taught by one of the top 2-3 OL coaches of the last 20yrs.  I wouldn't put DG in the same class so if he fixed something that wasn't broken just because it is his preference that is on DG.

I'll echo those that praise this article while being depressed about the reality that Solder just really seems to suck right now. I'm hoping it's correctable, but he's a guy with a history of back injury (which could explain his stance not being as deep) and concussions (which could explain mental mistakes). Hard to be optimistic at this point.

His footwork was terrible in the first 3 games.  Even on plays where he was sucessful in setting blocks he wasn't always in the ideal position.  He wasn't getting off at the snap effectively.

This is an excellent idea that I hadn't thought of.  The coach's film only goes back a few years but I should be able to get some pre and post-DG looks at Jake Long.

Its not quite as bad as it seems.  He was MUCH better in the KC game, both in results and technique.  The only terrible play was not completely his fault, there wasn't much he could do against Hali's jump.  Outside of that play he was quite effective (which PFF agrees with, -2.4, -2.1, -3.3, +1.1 in the 4 games so far).

While it looks bad based on the article, that was every play with a critical error.  My hope is that he's getting used to the new stance and the advantages it provides.  I'm not sure what those advantages are but I'm hoping they exist because it explains why they haven't just gone back to what was working.

I certainly hope you're right on that. I guess the flipside to the concussion concern is that he just missed a few weeks of practice and now he's coming around...

This would be good.

Also that jump = half yard offside. I still can't believe the refs missed that even knowing it did not matter in terms of the outcome.
