The NFL is expanding its alternate broadcasts with Nickelodeon and CBS Sports to the Super Bowl.
This year’s championship game, slated for February 11 in Las Vegas, will be the first to get the slime- and graphics-filled treatment for kids audiences, with the telecast airing exclusively on Nickelodeon.
In the leadup to Super Bowl LVIII, Nickelodeon plans another alternate telecast on Christmas Day at a game in Las Vegas. CBS Sports is presenting the main game on the CBS Television Network, also streaming it on Paramount+ and on mobile with NFL+, in addition to the Nick-ified telecast exclusively on Nickelodeon.
The league struck the partnership with the kids media brand as it looks to expand viewership and keep younger audiences engaged.
The Super Bowl plan builds on Nickelodeon’s Emmy Award-winning telecast of the 2021 NFL Wild Card Game on Nickelodeon.
“This will be a historic Super Bowl in Las Vegas, and we’re thrilled to partner with the NFL to bring the game to the whole family with the first-ever alternate telecast of the Super Bowl,” Paramount CEO Bob Bakish said. “In year one of our new long-term deal with the NFL, we continue to maximize our expanded distribution rights and further unlock the value of the League through the demonstrated power of our multiplatform portfolio across CBS, Paramount+ and Nickelodeon.”
“We’re thrilled to partner with CBS Sports and Nickelodeon to present the first alternate telecast of the Super Bowl,” said Hans Schroeder, NFL Executive Vice President of Media Distribution. “Our previous telecasts on Nickelodeon have been huge hits and created a new and different way to experience an NFL game. We’re excited to bring that creativity to Super Bowl LVIII and give our fans another way to enjoy one of the world’s most popular sporting events.”
“We are unbelievably proud to partner with CBS Sports and the NFL to bring Nick’s personality and unique visual sensibility to the Super Bowl,” said Brian Robbins, President and CEO, Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon; and Chief Content Officer, Movies & Kids & Family, Paramount+. “As we’ve shown with our prior zeitgeist-busting Wild Card and Nickmas coverage, combining the absolute excitement of NFL action with the creativity that can only come from Nickelodeon’s cool POV makes for a must-see event for kids and families everywhere

Given the success of the Nick Alternate TelecastDuring the Playoffs last season, not shocking (at least IMO) that CBS would do this the year they get the Super Bowl... Question then becomes if this is a "Smashing success" would the NFL continue this Alternate Telecast when CBS is not broadcasting the main Super Bowl

Don't expect it would be up to the NFL -- the rightsholding network would be highly unlikely to allow Nickelodeon to siphon away any audience.

I suppose there could be a revenue-sharing way to pull it off, but given how competitive the broadcasters are, I'd be highly highly highly surprised.

I agree. But OTOH, ABC/ESPN has both Disney option and ABC Freeform (or whatever that network is called) and I'm guessing NBC and Fox could find some similar youth/family-centered network in their pantheons.

I think the problem is that its the Nick brand that is a large reason for the big viewership numbers... and outside of Cartoon network, it wont work work (IMO) on any random "family channel"

I remember the first one they did. It was a playoff game and had a bunch of explanations (like what each position meant and stuff) plus a Young Sheldon to explain penalties. It was loads of fun (I caught a lot of it on a rebroadcast by NFLN).

While I agree it's a branding thing, I am pretty sure ABC/Disney (do they get to do the SuperBowl in the new TV deal?) and NBC Universal can eventually pull it off. Not sure about FOX.

And yeah, no way any network would share the Super Bowl broadcast with a competitor.

True... but the whole deal about the Nickelodeon presentation is that it's so steeped in the Nick brand. The ABC/ESPN cable brands (also including FX) would never run something so Nick-promotional.

What ABC/ESPN might do is a Manning-cast version on a flanker brand. I find the Manning-cast impossible to watch if you give a half a shit about the game (unlike the Nickelodeon version, which is fantastic), but there are those who like it, I guess. I wouldn't think ABC/ESPN would monkey around with the Super Bowl, but they do go there with the College Football Championship, so maybe they would. Probalby actually.

NBCU's USA network doesn't have an audience or brand distinct from the NBC mothership. Their doing a Bravo-cast or a SYFY-cast sounds like a terrible idea.

Fox's only available flanker brand now is Fox News. I just threw up in my mouth.

The NHL did a live animated game this year and my girls (who barely know what hockey is) were riveted. This is a smart idea.
