I've been thinking more about this, and I guess the most sensible "playing for the future" move they can make is to trade Victorino, not because they'd get anything worthwhile for him, but rather because it would force Farrell to play either Castillo or Bradley or both. And, okay, two months isn't a large sample size, but I think one or both of them up and playing well would do more to instill confidence that they can handle the job next year (perhaps in some sort of job-share system). And that might be the difference between throwing a bunch of money at Upton or Heyward or Gordon and spending that money elsewhere.

Not here
Hey guys, I just wanted to note that since that seven game losing streak, the Sox have gone 9-5. That's not a sexy winning streak but it has come, by and large against good teams. There are 24 games before the deadline and continuing at that place would put us at 51-52.

If the Sox can actually put together a 38 game stretch that gets back into things, I'm buying. I'm not buying a rental, but I'm getting serious about Hamels and I'm looking for a first baseman.

6 games out following the Yankee loss tonight.

Thanks to that Impossible Dream record I listened too much as a kid, that's always been my benchmark:

"At the All Star Break, for heaven's sake, just six games from the lead."

Keep this up, and you're not selling.

For the second straight night, the Sox won while the Blue Jays (obv), Rays, Orioles and Yankees lost. Boston is still five games out of fourth, but now only six out of first.

What seemed clear a week ago has clouded over a bit.
