Not to disagree with you generally, but I think it's clear that, at this point, Masterson is just being showcased to potential trade partners to see if anyone will give up more than a bag of balls.

Who on earth looks at 2009 Brad Penny and says, "let's do that again"?

Way to miss the point.  Justin Masterson is inconsequential in the grand scheme, as was Brad Penny.  He was a (barely) warm body on a one-year deal filling space until a younger, better internal option was ready to take over.  When the need arises, they'll dump him without a second thought, just as they did Penny.  Has his salary in any way impeded what the team did and can do for the rest of 2015?  Does it impact future dealings?

And wasting $6 million on Allen Craig is inconsequential, and it's inconsequential that Rusnay Castillo is gettin $10 million to play for Pawtucket, and $2 million for Craig Breslow is inconsequential.   Lots of inconsequential around here.  A few more million wasted here and there and maybe we start to get to consequential? No?

And does the "Grand Scheme" include finishing last in 2015?  Because there are only 25 active roster spots, and Masterson is taking up a lot of player-days on that roster that could be going to someone else, perhaps even someone else who might have been willing to sign with Boston for $10 million this year.  Pick a FA middle reliever, which is what Masterson is now: Luke Hochevar?  Luke Greggerson?

Yep, they've piddled away a lot of middling deals.  Craig, Mujica, Breslow, and Masterson add up to $22M in zero production, and I am cutting some slack on Castillo because I think he has some long-term value.  Those gifts keep on giving, with Craig making another $20M in 2016/17 plus a $1M buyout in 2018.  You don't think $10M in 2016 or 2017 could procure something useful for this team?

Oh, but you see, Craig's money no longer counts against the salary cap.  And money that doesn't count against the salary cap gets paid by pink unicorns who travel over the rainbow to pick up magic gold coins rather than out of any budget for baseball operations.

I'm not sure I understand this. Is there some indication that the Red Sox are going to spend well under the luxury tax level?

Yeah, and you're missing my point which is that you're trying to defend the Masterson signing by comparing him to 2009 Brad Penny.

How is he inconsequential when he just single-handedly lost us a game?

Although I'll grant you that the season is shot already, so perhaps it is inconsequential.

I'm with Plymp, though /ducks. Seems to be a lot of that around here.

No, there isn't.
